Duty Free Price is $458 but if you're not travelling overseas then it's $503.80

They're having a sale on their cameras at the moment but don't know when it will end. This sale price might be available at other JR Duty Free stores.

Update (22/05/2013): From the latest comments it seems that this sale is over hence I'm marking this deal as expired.

  • It's still a lot for a compact camera with a fixed lens. At this price why wouldn't you just buy a Nex 3 or a Micro 4/3rds camera?

The size and the lense, etc. How much is a M43 lense with 28-100mm and F1.8-4.9? Let alone Carl Zeiss certified.

      • -1

Just remember that the focal range might be equivalent but the f numbers aren't. For example a f2.0 lens on a full frame will let in about as much light and have about as much depth of field as a f1.4 lens on an APS-C camera or a f1.0 lens on a Micro 4/3rds camera. This camera has an even smaller sensor.

actually you got the theory half right … light transmission remain the same in correspond to the f-stops. it's only the depth of field is greater on the crop sensor.

        • I'm referring to total light transmission, not light density. In terms of total light transmission and depth of field this lens is about equivalent to a f4.8-f13.2 lens on a full frame camera.

        • What monkp said.
Beyond a shallower DoF, you also gain better ISO performance with larger sensors

No idea what any of you said.
Apparently it takes great pics. According to a bunch of reviews from people / sites that I would completely ignore and not trust if it was a field I knew about.

        • Stick to that and don't confuse yoursellf with what shlomo said which isn't true anyway regarding f numbers.

      Where have you found cheaper?

    Great price!
Got mine for $620 a few weeks ago. Very happy about the picture quality. I have owned a dslr for many years, but I can't carry it with me all the time, and to me the best camera is the one with me when I need it. Upgrading from Canon s95, the rx100 is so far the best compact camera I come across.

  • whats the best price on this at the moment in Sydney? through eglobal?

  • Damn it, flying overseas on Thurs, but JR doesnt have a shop in Sydney. :(

  • +1

Absolutely fantastic price. Just got one set aside for me here in Adelaide. Considering the best grey import price is $519 landed from Eglobal. And the one from JR comes with an Australian warranty. And still no announcement of a replacement.

  • great price.

  • I have one of these and have been very happy with it. I got it for the times when I just can't take all of my DSLR gear with me.

It's a great camera at a great price. At the time it was released the New York Times reviewed it as the best comapct camera ever made.

Good price for a damn good camera. It's the first truly pocketable camera where I felt like I wasn't missing out. I've had mine since it was released last year and I've been able to take so many pics with it, even more than my Micro Four Thirds gear, since I can bring it with me everywhere.

By the way, I believed for a long time that 12mp was sufficient for a digital camera and I was initially put off by the 20mp of the RX100 but Sony does a damn good job with their sensors. Pics look good even when viewed at 100%. I'm able to crop significantly and still have a picture that I'm pleased with. The default settings out the box aren't ideal though and the images are a little soft so turn it up a bit (according to your liking) if you do get it. The shadow detail is pretty good too, even when shooting JPGs. It's crazy good when shooting in RAW. And the noise doesn't look too digital like with a lot of other cameras. It looks closer to film. Add a bit of grain in post processing and pics look amazing.

Haha I only meant to leave a brief comment but I seem to have a tendency to get a little chatty when talking about this camera. I guess it's obvious that I love it. Anyone interested, try it out for a few days if you can. I don't think a few mins in the store is enough. I initially wasn't a big fan (the first couple of days of owning it) but it grew on me and I fell in love once I learned more about how to use it and get the most out of it.

  • I paid about $550 shipped for this from Camera Paradise last year (grey import) which was the cheapest I could find. I would snap this up in a second, very happy I bought this over micro 4/3rd as we ended up using it much more than I think we would have used a micro 4/3rd.

    • A lot of people are buying way more than they need with interchangeable lens cameras. With this camera you are getting a top notch lens matched perfectly with compact body, pretty much all you need.

  • Awesome price awesome camera

  • Thank you numero8 bought one today for $458 but I can't open it until I travel. oh well one more week before I can open the box.

    Cheers

You can actually use the camera before leaving.
      http://www.customs.gov.au/site/page4461.asp

Can I use the goods before I leave?

Non-consumable goods such as clothing, cameras and jewellery can be used. Consumable goods such as wine, perfume and chocolates must be unopened and cannot be wholly or partly used.

      • I wonder when this law was changed cause JR Duty Free are not aware of this.

        • They aren't aware of their own sales either apparently… see the comment below.

      • What is the difference between buying duty-free goods and the TRS?

Duty-free purchases can only be made from a selected number of duty-free stores and the range of goods are limited. Goods purchased are sold in a sealed bag and cannot be used prior to your departure.

Goods purchased for which a TRS refund can be claimed can be purchased from any retailer registered for GST and can be used (except consumables) prior to your departure. In addition, the range of goods is almost unlimited.

Better be safe than sorry. Seal it and check with the customs at the airport.

But if one pays the 10% GST in a duty free store, he can use the product and claim the 10% back at the airport?

  • If you don't have your passport with you can you just claim back the GST at the airport?

  • Tried in Brisbane today and they claimed the offer ended in April. Can anyone post up a receipt?

  • I would not trust what sales people are telling me.
I checked if they had any left a few days ago, they looked into computer and said no, none left.
I called them next day, they said they have two in the warehouse but the sale is over.
Now, thinking logically it is nonsense.
