Also checkout this out(USED): NIKON J1 Twin Lens Kit + 2 extra batteries + Carry Case - $ 377 delivered.

    • And why would you buy an used item where you can get new one for less? Granted that it has more accesorries, but I'd get the new one without 2nd thought.

      • Its just a suggestion to look at, no harm done…, besides the guy is trying to sell it so if at all DSE run out of stock, this guy might be your only option… lol

      Working OK Now

  • What is this camera like compare to a GF3 or EPM-1?

    • +1

Those you nmentioned are better in nearly all areas. However, this is a good deal for 2 lenses in the Nikon 1 format, if it tickles your fancy.

Credit to the OP for finding it.

FAST….I have one of these, and it puts my Nikon D700 to shame in terms of AF speed (with native lenses). Image quality is ok, like the E-PM1/GF3 it is good in good light but starts to fall to bits in low light. There isn't a lot of DOF isolation ability due to its smaller sensor, but I have a 10mm (27mm) f/2.8 and a 18.5mm (50mm) f/1.8 and am very happy with this camera.

I also have an E-P3, and truth said, the little Nikon is pretty much on par in terms of image quality.

Watch out if you decide to use the AUTO ISO feature, the camera wants to keep the ISO low to the point that you risk blurring the image through camera shake. I tend to manually change my ISO if I think the shutter speed is too low in AUTO ISO mode.

This is one of the few cameras I own that I will trust to pick it's own AF point, pick its own ISO and exposure. There are moments when I will manually override but for the most part the J1 is allowed to do its thing.

The downside is that the controls are really pokey and a lot of adjustments are menu based.

      • Fast AF. I dunno about putting D700 to shame but fastest AF speed on mirrorless. Image quality is good not excellent. Video quality is excellent. No AF noise during video recording. Hybrid AF system really makes this a great video camera.

        • I totally forgot about the video goodies…. In good light that 10mm is stupid fast.. The zooms probably not so fast. Yes definitely the fastest mirrorless

      • In low light, the AF is terrible on the V1/J1.
They both share the same autofocus system.

My Panasonic DMC-G3 beats it. And all of them don't come close to modern DSLRs when the light dips (Nikon, etc). In good light, it's v.good but still not on the level of the better DSLRs, in my opinion (and so many cameras have great autofocus in good light anyway). I have the D5100 for reference and I have the V1 (thanks OzBargain).

If I am taking fast action shots and I wanted to be 'no compromise' I'd still choose my DSLR; not only for its better focusing under a wider variety of conditions, but it's more megapixels and larger sensor and shot-to-shot speed. If I wanted low weight and decent telephoto with this dual lens kit, I'd take the J1/V1, with the nice compact telephoto. It's a good deal, but personally I am 'over' buying cameras without viewfinders like the J1 here.

(hopefully I can keep to that promise…)

If you are the reselling type (I'm not), I doubt anyone would lose much money on this deal if they had to offload it after some use, so it's worth a buy. The lenses are more tempting than the camera, to me (since I prefer the V1).

        • I would have to say that in low light it is definitely better than my EP3 and A65 for focus speed… I would not say it's AF is terrible though. The D700 I'd better in low light… But for the money it should be ashamed of the lack of advantage in good light. .

In image quality it is marginally worse than the EP3 so the G3 should edge it out. But for the EDC usage that mine had I don't notice this.

Like you.. The proper DSLR comes out when the light fades. The J1/V1 does have a monstrous frame rate 10fps with focus and 60fps locked focus… not that I use it for that either. The Nikon 1 has almost every DSLR beat for burst speed… but yes it is a compromise in terms of image quality

        • Generally agreed on most points.

For fast shots without compromise my preference is for the optical viewfinder on a DSLR (with very little blackout or freezing of the screen and waiting to be put back 'in-the-scene', unlike all mirrorless models I've tried when hammering the shots) and they are the best in low-light too, but your points are pretty valid.

This is a very good price for what you get anyway, so all in context, a good deal.

This thing is built tough. I have kids, and they drop it throw it kick it, but it just keeps working.

  • How does this compare to the V1 at $409?http://dicksmith.com.au/product/XG3558/nikon-v1-compact-series-camera-twin-lens-kit-black
