Man I love Lenovo laptops, but I am having a freaking nightmare with their service dept atm. They've had my laptop for over three months, and despite repeated promises, have never contacted me about it; I've always been having to call them. There's a big thread about it on Whirlpool: http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/archive/1996210

Next lappy I get, gonna make sure the warranty service is as good as the product.

Their service has gone to shite since they brought it in-house. It's a MAJOR problem.

      • Can't say I have had the same issues, laptop sent and delivered back all in 1 week, fixed locally. This was about a year ago, how long ago did the service get brought in house? IBM was doing it when I sent mine I'm pretty sure (which kind of used to be in house I guess)

        Pro Retina is $1649
        X1 is $1063

They are not even a comparable product, different screen sizes, different O/S, $600 price discrepancy.

        • dont compare this way, X1 is definitely better. i am absoultely a Lenova Fan, very reliable quality and excellent service

        • lenova, sarcasm?

      Hi Paddy567,

I can get someone from Lenovo to contact you about the issue you have (if you want). Are you alwayssallin on that whirlpool thread?

      • Heh, I haven't even added my story to that litany of woes over there.

          Hi Paddy567,

Can you send an email to socialcare(at)lenovo.com and explain your situation?

          Regards

We lost 3 laptops, sending them back for service. Luckily they gave us a new laptop to replace one of them.

Agreed the service is absolute shite, escalation is hit and miss at the best of times

    • Toshiba is my recommendation, they actually have their own service centre. With their own staff not some outsourced crap.

Although who knows when this will change

    • Just would like to say that their service here in Singapore is FANTASTIC!

Dropped my laptop off, rang me 4 days later to come and pick it up.

Unfortunately it's no better if you're one of their very large corporate clients. I've seen one laptop take 5 months to repair and it went back with a proven faulty HDD, multiple times. That's just one example (albeit one of the worst) of the dozens I see a week.

      • Agreed, and then they damage it aswell. Have many more repair damaged laptops lately.

We're in the same boat as a large corporate. There aren't words to describe how bad the service has become.

    • I just had to have my x1 fixed and was pretty pleased with the service. Took about a week and a half with a public holiday in the middle.

I just like their 14 days return policy as I just called this afternoon to return my S430 after 10 days usage, the lady nicely organised the return without any question, and let me keep the USB replicator for 1 dollar, which comes very handy.

  • Massive $522 to upgrade to 256gb SSD, not very nice pricing for upgrades!

  • Hmmm… I'd stay away from Lenovo. A few friends of mine have had DOA laptops from them (even some of the replacements were DOA too). Their warranty service is slow too. I'm gonna stick with Asus. Never had a problem with their warranty services; contracted or in-house. All problems fixed without fuss.

  • Tempting… or wait for Helix?

    • helix is worth the wait! personally waiting for yoga 11s, really wish it had come out earliar though

  • The 4gb of non upgradeable (soldered on) RAM has always turned me away from the X1 Carbons, as much as I love the design and form factor. The 8gb RAM upgrade is far too expensive for what it is.

Haswell is just around the corner too…will be interesting to see how the Thinkpad line is refreshed.

My experience with Lenovo is mixed with good and bad. The bad one is my $1400 X1 Carbon, no power come up after 7 months, sent it back replied with a $285 services quote saying I cracked the screen and the case! That look like a scam as I sent a none-damage PC back just doesn't power on. But again, it's quoted from xerox.com not lenovo so I guess some kind of greedy service agent with them. Also there is a key fell off by itself, without any damage, usually I can just click it back but this is a cap one very hard to do it. Lenovo also claim it's user's fault I think what the hell, don't treat me like a lair!

I have one of these, and:

    • battery life is so-so
    • trackpad is near uncontrollable
    • power supply brick is a err brick
    • power supply uses weird connector not found on any other laptop as far as I know

Seriously, save your money and get eg Dell XPS 13 (which I also have) and is great

    • +1

Read reviews that the touchpad on this is one of the best.

    • you will need to pay more for the ultra thin power brick… :(

  • My experience, the truth about service & warranty from big brand name these days really about the same, I had seen many complaint on each individual brand, if you google, you will see thousands of posts complaining every brand on the market. At the end of the day, is about luck, whether they happen to find the correct fault right away & whether they happen to have spare part in stock to do repair on time as well. Local support definitely is advantage I would say, otherwise in reality most of them not much of different. Vice versa, every brand also have good customer service support feedback too. Just go for the one that you like, at the end of the day, most of them are made from china and only high end model you pay for the research & design quality.

By the way, this Carbon really not bad value, I'm more interest in Helix, but will wait for Haswell :)

    • Every brand goes through changes although not at the same time, Lenovo hasnt ever serviced their own machines.

When Lenovo bought the pc division from IBM, the servicing was almost immediattely done by bytecraft/solectron etc.

The phone support and systems was the only thing that remained with IBM, this is what changed recently.

How do i know, i was an IBM tech until it got sold to Lenovo.

  • I've been thinking about the X1C for a while as well but might wait to see if IBM comes out with a refresh with Haswell and screen updates which is rumoured to be sometime this month.

In regards to bad service & warranty, the only way to avoid this is to buy into a brand that has a physical presence that can help fix your problems quickly. One brand that does this extremely well is Apple.

  • Can the X1 carbon mini-display port work with those mac's mini-display port to HDMI adapter? with sound?

  • Bex does this machine as a similar multi-touch trackpad, the same as the one on MAC?

  • Is there any deal for the one with touch screen?
