Looking for SSD (prefer HP) and something that will run smooth. Space is not an issue as we dont use much. Also wondering if HD screen would be in that price range ~

You will not get a Full HD - SSD hard drive portable laptop for that price range.
The best you can probably do is a i7 / hybrid drive (500gb / 32gb) / 14-15" (1366x768) with 4-8gb of Ram similar to this one http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/101104

That one has a full hd screen and a mSSD for 799+shipping. Horize seems to be decent as my gf's brother has one but the ultrabook version. Folks at whirlpool also seem to be a fan of them too.
