wow, finally they sell it for the real price.

I was of the belief that there is no difference between a $3 cheapie HDMI cable and $1xx Monster HDMI cable. With HDMI, it'll either work or not work at all. The only advantage I see with dearer HDMI cables is that the actual construction of the cable is better, as in it is more durable and less likely to break (which doesn't really matter if it's not going to be moved all that often).

    • I was of the belief

Now everyone can find out for themselves !

    • I've managed to break HDMI signals before…. using an unpowered splitter and 2x 25 m cables. The picture still displayed, but it looked like it only had a colour depth of 8-bits.
Solution: Powered splitter &/or shorter cables.
Apart from that one issue, everything works fine with the cheapest cables I could buy off eBay.

I hope it's better thn the iPhone cables they were selling.

Oh, the title is confusing, I thought I was buying 5 cables?

  • +2

are you sure these aren't fake. Monster cables are never this cheap….

    • Nothing to suggest so in deal posted in January. Check link above :)
If you find evidence otherwise, surely this can be deleted

Except COTD is listed on their site as a counterfeit dealer.
Looks like they are fakes otherwise they would try and get that listing removed

Good find. COTD tricking the public once again.

        • +3

That is a list of unauthorised dealers…. Which monster states "Purchasing products from unauthorized sellers may result in you receiving counterfeit or fake products. "

No absolute, verified statement claiming counterfeit goods.

Regardless I would not buy any monster product from any dealer, authorised or not

I believe people have highlighted previously that these are the low end Monster cables, not the same as their high end cables.

With that said, I doubt you will see any difference in picture quality.

      • You definitely won't see a benefit in pic qual, it's been proven on a number of sites (google is your friend)

  • is this better or $1 one better

just bought a Monster cable from HN today for $299. the guy said he lost money selling it to me at that price. He said it would really improve the picture and sound quality on my TV.

Monster Cables should sell these cables right next to the vitamin pills in the supermarkets.
    They're marketed the same.

    • Interesting comparison choice, but K.

  • There's no mention of 1.4v or 3D, does it mean this is an older cable that does not support 3D?
(Just bought a new 3D TV, need to know if this cable is suitable).

    • The top image, despite being quite small, does say "3D Compatible" as the first dot point on the right of the image.

    • +1

It is because anyone smart enough to know about 1.4v would be smart enough to know Monster cables offer little benefit over cheap cables.

Monster's business plan relies on niave customers.

    • There's no mention of 1.4v or 3D, does it mean this is an older cable that does not support 3D?

All HDMI cables work with 3D.
1.3 or 1.4 really makes no difference. The only time I would consider spending a little more (not Monster more) is when running a 10mtr+ cable though a ceiling for a projector and even then its most likely not necessary.

      • Actually only HDMI v1.4 officially supports 3D. Using anything below v1.4 may work but it will lower itself to a lower 3D mode.

  • +1

The markup on cables in brick and mortar stores must be obscene - it wouldn't surprise me if it was 300%. I am extremely angered by these (un)Australian companies that are ripping myself and my fellow citizens off.

    • +1

      1st world problems…

    • Way, way more than just 300% markup.

Saw Sony's own brand component cables in a Sony store a few years ago - 3m for $219.

  • These are going to be fake.

And you'll never know because of how easy it is to make it look like the real thing.

They look cheaply made as well.

    • +2

      Umm… internally inconsistent comment?

      • I thought I made it pretty clear.

They are going to be fake unless they were taken from the back of a truck.

If they were taken from the back of a truck or fakes from china, you'll probably never know considering how easy it is to fake cheap HDMI cables.

Faking the proper monster cables you see in stores is much harder, I wasn't even aware they sold cheap looking monster cables like these.

    • So the question is, how do these retailers get away with selling 'fake' products? It's not like we're talking about a little guy, COTD is surely one of the largest Aussie online retailers.

      • I think you will find these are real Monster cables. But they will be grey import and of a lower cheaper quality than the ones sold by Australian distributor.

That is why they can get away with it.

  • I bought a $5 HDMI1.4 3D Cable from MSY.com.au and it does everything you would expect it too. Any cable from monster is a ripoff. Remember they were the company selling "gold Plated" optical sound cables and saying they gave a better connection and thus superior sound.

    • +1

If you're using longer lengths (eg. for a projector) this certainly isn't true. Even though it is a digital cable, poor quality will impede on performance. Plenty of info out there on it.

      • Nobody understands this either…

99% of cables posted on ozbargain aren't suited for a 15m+ run because they are such poor quality.

They are only generally 1-2m long so its fine though.

The main problem is spending time and money to fix a long cable only to have to replace it a few months later when you get white sparkles from the poor quality cable.

  • They are probably fake. Sure for the most part HDMI cables are identical but there is a difference. Durability, construction and quality control is sure to be different.

  • Darn regret getting one :(

    • Can't cancel after order is confirmed :-(

  • The shipping for showing as 15$ for 3 or more.
