This is 2013. GPS and a clock comes in a $40 phone, along with wifi, 3G internet, google maps, navigation, exercise programs, and Angry Birds. A HRM is about the same. What is worth the extra hundred bucks here?

You don't need angry birds or a heavy phone when your out running. I won't risk my phone out in bad weather.

good point - was doing my half-marathon a month ago with my phone in an armband. Didn't expect it to rain before but there was a thunderstorm in the middle of the race. I was completely wet - and my phone got wet too. After the race the phone started to have some small problems…

        You don't need angry birds

Joke. It was a real question though. I go cycling with HRM on the handlebars and cheap phone (no sim) in the back pocket to log the ride. Was trying to think if logging heart rate might be useful.

or a heavy phone when your out running.

D'oh - didn't think of that. Even a small phone when jogging must be uncomfortable.

      • Yep. That and a phone is bulkier and heavier. Modern ones in particular can be awkward given many are now rocking 5" displays which isn't exactly small. A lot of people who jog probably don't want to carry much more than a key to get back into their house.

While it is limited to higher end models, some of these watches are also capable of being used for swimming.

If you think like that, then you probably couldn't use this properly anyway.
A watch like this is great for graphing the speed at which you run (via gps) VS energy expenditure (via heart rate).

I really want a watch like this so I can map my energy discharge curves (like a battery). In the sense that, if in the future I ever need to be somewhere far away, I know roughly what speed to run most efficiently for the given time. As well as that, it'd be useful to compare over time, to see the how fast you're improving.

Yes, if you're smart enough you can make it work with a phone and cheap HRM (although you'll have to spend abit more to get computer connectivity i think), and that's probably the best option if you only do plan to do it a few times. If you plan on running a lot, the simplicity of this single package is probably worth the extra expense. Looking around this is a cheap price on a good watch. Its a good deal.

Garmin 210 is not a bad watch - a colleague bought one and he really likes it.
Regarding to HRM - you can get a bluetooth HR band but it costs $100 I think?
I own a Suunto Quest which I spent nearly $300 [but with a foot pod to measure speed/distance/cadence] $200 for a garmin is not a bad deal ~

This is a good price for this watch. I love running/gps apps on my phone and currently have my 4s and micoach app paired to the adidas connect HRM. I don't mind running with my phone but I know it's not for everyone. I keep it in a glad sandwich bag which weather proofs it. The #1 problem though using the phone, especially for longer runs, is battery. GPS takes a bit of battery so you have to be mindful and even top up the battery before a run. Watches therefore still have a purpose. Another reason is on a recent fun run I tucked away my phone and regretted not having a dedicated sports watch to easily check pace and distance. Also note, GPS doesn't work on treadmills. Here's a review of the FR210, this is a great page btw if you're into this stuff: http://www.dcrainmaker.com/2010/12/garmin-forerunner-210-in-…

    • Is there a HRM you'd recommend with nike+?

      • I have the Nike+ Sportswatch which might be about the only option. Does an ok job, although getting the heart rate sensor to register can be flakey I found. I think I might have got one produced in a bad batch however and never got around to returning it (the sensor…the watch is fine).

GPS doesn't work on treadmills, that's too funny, the basic conception of GPS would explain why, surely your joking putting that in there!!

  • It's for tracking pace etc not just distance, you can add a foot pod to this model to track while your indoors.

  • I don't run as much as I cycle and swim. I am not sure if this watch would be good for swimming though, any ideas? some of the "waterproof" garmin watches are not recommended for taking in water.

edit after googling this watch isn't suitable for swimming, you would need the more expensive (and uglier) garmin 310xt or 910xt.
