I was literally just in the market for this OP thank you!

Better than figuratively being in the market for one

  • Does anyone have any experience comparing these to Magene, which is only $25 online?

I've had cheap Chinese straps in the past, that did not last many years, but the Magene appears to be better built, and no interference problems.
I've been using the Magene speed/cadence sensors for years, and they are solid!

I’ve been using a COOSPO H808S for the last year and I can’t fault it. It isn’t usb charged but batteries last ages. Connects quickly and without fail to my Garmin. It was like $25 from aliexpress.

Never used cheaper ones, but I can give you my opinion on the Polar H10. The module itself lasts a long time. However the strap doesn't last as long. I swap out the strap every 6 months - 1 year but I do use it almost every day. I have also tried cheaper third party straps and they work but don't last as long as the ones made by Polar themselves.

I've had no issues with the aliexpress units. Normally get at least a couple of years out of them before there is a bit of corrosion inside the battery compartment. I normally buy 2, so I've always got one as a spare or as a gift.

I bought one of these to replace a Magene that had finally died after 4 years and other than the better strap they both do the same job.

Are these any different from the cycling ones?

    • I use this whilst cycling. It connects to my Garmin headunit via ANT+ no drama.

I can't tell you if it's different or not.

    • I've had a basic garmin one, as well as a wahoo one for cycling.
It will work regardless of cycling/running as it just measures heart rate.
There was (not sure if still around) a wahoo one that can also measure your running cadence, but cost more.
Just get one that supports bluetooth and you can pair with your phone and whatever app you prefer.
ANT+ would require a specific receiver.

Tip for dummies, personally tested by this dummy. If you leave the sensor on the strap the battery will run flat very quickly. If you take it off as soon as you are finished exercising the battery will last for 6 months+ - D'OH!

    • Thanks for the tip.

Just to clarify - do you mean removing the sensor from the strap, or removing the battery from the sensor?

      • +1

Leave the battery - unclip the sensor from the strap.

        • Thanks!

    • I bought one of these in September and never remove the sensor from the strap, after 5 months the battery is showing still showing 30% and I use the unit almost daily.

      • That is perplexing, Jaitch. I swear I went through at least 6 batteries and none of them lasted a month. Until I asked Polar what the problem was and now the battery lasts … well 9 months and counting. I can't think of any other variable that would affect the experiment.

"Connector: To preserve battery life and prevent snap oxidation, detach the
connector from the strap after every use and wipe it dry with a soft towel."

  • Worth using this if you're just using strava on mobile?

    • It's worth asking yourself if you'd find heartrate data helpful. You can think of your heartrate as a tachometer on your car. If you have a way to view it live while you're exercising, it can help you. If you're just reviewing it in post, it's less helpful, but you can still draw some conclusions from it. What kind of exercise are you doing, and what is your perceived effort during that exercise?

Just a reminder that you can redeem your Medibank points for parkrun vouchers and according to previous posts they stack.

  • Cheers mate, thank you! Just ordered one.

  • 99bikes pricebeat should work I guess? Could bring it down to $103.55
