So glad that we have price-conscious "spies" in our OzB Community…Just love it…

Based on it being $699 at Dickies…NO DEAL..

  • +1

@ guys saying this is not a deal based on Dick Smith's listing.. just to point out to you all, they are two different models.

The one on eStore is an L850/00R which has Win 7 Pro. The listing linked for Dick Smith is the L850/0C9 which has Win 7 Home Premium.

Maybe check the facts before you neg peoples posts.

thanks for this. But still, its a $90 difference. And whilst the OS might not be identical, it's practically the same for 99% of users.

      • There is a significant cost difference between Home and Pro. While you may not see value in it, it does not mean others do not. I know all my clients will not touch anything except Pro.

        • That significant cost difference on OEM is ~$45.

        • Sure, take it in isolation and just compare the OEM software differences. The pricing with laptop models in the same series varies. For example, Samsung Series 9 with W8 and one with W8 Pro. Bigger difference than just a mere $90.

In any case, I don't think this is a good deal, hence I didn't vote for it. But I wish people would compare apples with apples.

      • Home users maybe, but those hoping to use their computers on a domain don't have any choice but Pro/Ultimate.

  • i have this laptop, i had purchased this from shoppingexpress a while back for $711.00.
altho i love the specs this little thing has. there has been some nagging issues toshiba havent been able to help me with.

upon booting up, sound doesnt turn on. ill have to reboot to get sound to work.
and the speakers are very very tinny and can get crackly. it gets to the point where it would really hurt the ears.
i was told because its not harmon kardon, the speakers are just standard speakers.

also the f1, f2, f3 keys are secondary keys. ill have to hit the fn keys along side the f1 key to get it to work. something simple like alt f4 to close a window id have to press 3 keys.

anyone with this laptop, are you experiencing the same problems?
im a toshiba fan, but is lappy isnt so crash hot. maybe its why the price is quite low

    • A lot of Toshy notebooks still have the F keys as secondary function keys. Pretty dodgy considering virtually every other vendor has moved on to standalone keys as standard.

As for your sound not working issues.. that should have been addressed by Toshiba under warranty. From what you have described, if it's been happening from the beginning, that's a fault, period.

As for the speaker sound quality.. that's just laptop speakers for you. Toshiba standard laptop speakers are 2 watt at best. :\ Even harmon/kardon speakers are only 3 watt and not much better for listening to anything other than internet radio.

      • yeah the toshiba support dudes said because it wasnt a hardware issue, they cant really do anything besides telling me to format and reinstall OS.
        does suck.

ive had my old P100 toshiba satellite laptop and the sound is so much better than this laptop. its gotten to the point where i have to leave my headphones jacked in to avoid the crappy speakers.

i was happy paying $711 dollars for mine (had further discounts as i was travelling out side the country with it). just for future buyers beware

      • Toshiba service centre is great - I suggest you lodge a warranty call on it. As to the crackly sound, that's just laptop speakers.

You should be able to change Fn keys behaviour in BIOS. It does on my Toshiba L850.

        • really??
omg im gunna give this a go tonight

Method 1 (Toshiba HWSetup on Win 7)
          http://www.mytoshiba.com.au/support/items/faq/695

Method 2 (Toshiba Desktop Assist on Win 8)
On Windows desktop, find "Desktop Assist" and run. (Or find TosDesktopAssist.exe and run.) Click "Tools & Utilities" -> "System Settings" -> "Keyboard". Select Function Keys Mode (special vs standard), click "OK".

Method 3 (BIOS on my L850)
Turn off laptop, press and hold magic key (F2), turn on to enter BIOS.
Go to "Advanced" -> "System Configuration" -> "Function Keys Mode" -> Select mode. Press "F10" and "OK" to reboot.

    • Yeah this is really annoying especially when playing game.
The keyboard feel really bad. The touch pad is super sensitive, this make typing really hard as the cursor go over the place when you slightly touch the pad with the palm of your hand.
I bought this same laptop with a slightly better CPU and 6GB ram last year from SS so this is no deal.

  • You learn something new everyday hey..I didn't know that about the 1 icon for first time posters and I've been here a little while.

Can someone tell me what a P icon beside someone's name means??

    • Welcome to Ozbargain.

if you hover your cursor over it, a pop up will tell you, 1 mean first deal posted, Red P mean deal posted within few days of first deal
Green P mean deal posted few week after first deal.
Kind a like Australian license with the red and green P(which is lame)
Aff mean affiliate link within deal and Rep mean representative of a store.
      Hope this clear thing up

  • Samsung 3series is better than this machine for same price and comes with win8

  • No deal.

Last years model that used to sell for $699.00 when it was in stock.
