Maybe a special on the diskless N40L which is now more expensive might be a good (deal iii)!

    • +1

      haha…

    • Rep probably got a good deal with synnex to move out the N40L + Seagrate drives ;)

  • Was going to buy 3 X WD Red 3TB - But notice limit is only 2? Whyyy? Can't I order 3?

    • +3

I'm sorry but 2 is the limit - we need to provide our deal to as many people as we can.

      • Is there any credit card fee paying via PayPal?

        • +3

          no

        • +1

Bought 2. Really wanted 3 though. I guess will wait for your next special.

        • +1

Maybe wait 'til yours ships, & order your 3rd as soon as you know it has…?

Some Order Entry systems even let you order more than -stated- limit a moment after your 1st order is acknowledged.

PS "At your own risk" as always…

  • If we order a server + hdd + graphics card, will it come shipped with the components installed?

    • We do not install any components - the hard drive and video card would most likely be sent on a separate parcel from the server.

    • +1

Takes no time to install the components.

    • When I got the N54L deal the other week from these guys, my graphics card in it's box, and ram stick in it's plastic container, were tucked safely inside the HP microserver shipping box. The router I bought was in a separate package in the same shipment.

As matt3 said, was pretty easy to install.

  • +3

Good deal ShoppingE ! I'd definitely recommend you guys to anyone.

  • No Sandisk SSD specials?

    • +16

Not today, anyone else interested in Sandisk SSD special?

      • +2

        i was,until i bought a samsung off you 3 days ago!

      • +1

interested, yes, but can't really justify to myself the spend…

I hear they make a nice addition to a ZFS pool… plus my laptop is old and could do with an SSD upgrade. So please don't do a special, or I might run out of money again.

        • Yes, currently looking for a mid size SSD at good price

        • May be interested in a SSD as well. Also after a 8gb stick. If it's good I'll definitely be pulling the trigger…

      • yes please

      • very, would there be a deal very soon? Need to start saving money before deals rolling out….

      • +1

I have been waiting for a SSD sale for ages, strangely, they never seem to go on sale anymore.

  • So damn tempted to get another N40L…with the 3 Terrier-bite drive in it!!!

  • What OS is best to run to stream media to an android hdmi dongle?
Also can I can a Windows server OS for free as a student?

    • +2

If your school or uni is registered in dreamspark, yeah you can.

    • freenas or ubuntu are both free…

  • Any N54L deals coming up soon?

    • +2

I wouldn't bother waiting or paying extra; the N54L improvements were not significant enough to warrant an upgrade.

  • +1

    wow, WD Red price dropped.

  • +2

Hey Rep, can you please verify whether your Seagate barracuda 2TB drives are 2 platters or 3 platters?

Just in case here is a picture that compares the 2: http://forums.seagate.com/stx/attachments/stx/ata_drives/284…

Middle one with bigger indentation in the right corner is 2 platters, and runs faster than the one on the left with has a shallow indentation having 3 platters, and as such runs slower.

    • +3

tough one - the ones i saw outside the boxes are the 2 platters. However as I cannot guarantee all our stock are the same - The ones that order first will get the 2 platters - as far as i know.

    • +3

I'd be a bit careful with the Seagates. Judging by these, http://goo.gl/TXaBm , charts the 2TB Seagate ST2000DM001 looks pretty good for the price.

But as you know there are two different versions of the ST2000DM001. This Seagate document, http://goo.gl/sc4lw , in section 2.1 page 11 shows that there is one version with 3 666GB disks and one with 2 1TB disks.

There has been some discussion here, http://goo.gl/pijN6 , and here, http://goo.gl/S1R2X , regarding the 3 disk version being noticeably slower than the 2 disk one. And when I asked Seagate about the indentations they said it wasn't a reliable way of telling which drive you'll get.

WD Reds are probably a better bet and may not be any slower with regards to read/write either even though they have a slower spin rate. I know this is a different box altogether but Synology says "You wont feel any difference in using 7200 RPM disk's rather than 5900RPM or 5400 RPM disk's, with those DS models." http://goo.gl/elTqL Not sure if the same would apply in the HP though.

      • Thanks rep and Bystander.

Bystander i'm only interested in buying one drive, im not looking into the nas solution. I just wanted a single drive, and thought that the indentation was determining factor, however since seagate themselves say otherwise i would probably steer clear.

So I'm looking into another 7200rpm 2TB harddrive, any suggestions?

Also the 3TB barracuda doesn't suffer from this issue right?

  • I've been wanting a Hard Drive I can use over my network without the computer being on

I have been looking at a WD My Book live as a NAS drive

Will this HP N40L Microserver + 3TB Seagate - $299 + Shipping be better for me?

I read I could install 3 more drives in it and I'm guessing it has a Ethernet port?

Can someone explain why if yes?

    • By installing something like FreeNAS on it (Free download, install it to a USB pen drive and stick this in the slot on the motherboard to start it) you've effectively got yourself a 'real' NAS. It'll draw more power than the WD MyBook but it'll also take up to 4 drives (5 with a BIOS update) so you're much better off future-proof wise. As it's a proper NAS you also have the ability to use RAID for protection against disk failures, merging all disks into one big pool of storage etc. Depends if you want something really simple or not but I'd recommend an N40L with FreeNAS to anyone who wanted to get some storage on their network.

  • If I wanted to use this as a HTPC with Win 7 installed I would assume that other than the video card I would also need extra Ram, can someone explain the difference between the 2 types do I need the more expensive set?

    • +1

the n40l comes with a 2GB ECC RAM and you cant mix ECC and non-ECC RAM.

      • +2

I don't know about windows, but when I got the N54L from the last deal, I bought the 4gb non-ecc ram, popped it in with the existing 2gb ecc, and Ubuntu 12.10 was perfectly happy to use it all (not that I have maxed it out yet, so maybe it just hasn't spread over both sticks yet…)

    • +2

my N40L runs fine as Windows 7 as a HTPC on the original 2 GB ram.

  • The video card mentions it needs 400W power, how does that work with this server?

    • +1

That's the recommended Minimum System Power requirements. It's just a guideline. Taken from the AMD specs page:

Minimum recommended system power supply wattage is based on the specific graphics card and the typical power requirements of other system components. Your system may require more or less power. OEM and other pre-assembled PCs may have different power requirements.

      http://www.tomshardware.com/forum/356751-33-radeon-6450-250w
The guy there says it won't even draw above 26W.

On another note, I recently bought a low profile NVIDIA GT 610: http://www.geforce.com/hardware/desktop-gpus/geforce-gt-610/…

And they list the Maximum Graphics Card Power (29W) along with Minimum System Power Requirement of 300W.

  • In case anyone is still wondering How to Apply an N40L (or the faster N56L, even), ie, given that these servers have NO Audio & NO WiFi…

[Call me "slow" but] I've just discovered a -fast- web server (reportedly -faster- than Apache), which - in its cost-free "Standard" version - can only run on machines with no -more- than 2 GB RAM (as the N40L & - I think - N56L have, correct me, if I'm wrong on the N56L):

    • "LiteSpeed" Web Server "Standard" ed'n (cost-free, but NOT Open Source)

It might even run (if slower, maybe) on the N36L (with its 1 GB RAM).

It runs on Linux & FreeBSD systems, among others.

Trade-off: pay for Electricity (w/ N40L) -vs- pay for Hosting (W/O).

    • Most web servers will run on 2gb unless it's full of complete crap. Most web servers should run on 128meg.

You can buy a cheapy usb audio plug for $2 on ebay.

      • It is a licensing restriction, the free version won't run on a PC with more than 2gb of RAM. You have to pay for a higher license to run on those. You misunderstood him as saying a minimum of 2gb when he meant a maximum of 2gb.

    • +1

Apache and nginx will run fine on a Linux or FreeBSD system with tiny amounts of RAM.

    • +2

lighttpd and ngix are both faster than apache and are free + open source

      • Lighttpd is basically abandoned these days, it seems people are moving to Cherokee and Nginx.

    • I'd choose Nginx or Cherokee (which are both open-source) over LiteSpeed.

    • Use nginx or lighttpd or cherokee. They're all open source.

  • +1

This is a good deal, the server box, the disks are the best prices I've found. I searched on staticice.com.au
You maybe able to find the ram a few dollars cheaper but it's a good price too.

    Thanks.

  • Sorry I'm a newb, but how will you play audio? is there a line in/out?

    • +1

The mentioned gfx card does audio out over HDMI.

    • You will need to buy and install either a dedicated graphics card with HDMI like the one mentioned or buy a usb audio stick to shove in the back. HDMI allows both visual and audio signals, but you'll need an HDMI tv/screen with speakers I guess.

      • Thanks! Say I have a simple pair 3.55mm speakers would I be able to use that somehow?

        • +2

Only if they plug into an amp/AV unit which has an HDMI input. You can't get the digital audio from an HDMI signal into old-fashioned analogue without some processing. You're better off getting a USB audio device if you just want a 'line out' to powered speakers or a non-HD amp. Beware it may be annoying to get both HDMI audio and USB audio working at the same time (I had problems under Linux, might be fine under Windows).

        • +1

Thanks, I might just get a pair of new speakers in the near future then! Thanks again.

        • +1

Correct, I bought something similar to this:
          http://www.msy.com.au/product.jsp?productId=5615
to provide an analog audio output for my old TV.
My N36L is around 2 years old now and have enjoyed using as a HTPC and torrent box. I was introduced to it via OzBargain too (think it was from DessyTek).

      • Alternatively, you could buy a pair of USB speakers (Logitech Z5, etc) that has the audio wizardry built in! ;)

  • Tempted to pick one of these up - does anyone know what 8gb stick would work with this?

Want to run 2012 or ESXi 5 on it..

Never heard of it having any issues with 8GB sticks, just make sure they aren't huge (ie. no massive heatsinks) and you should be fine.

And if in doubt, buy from somewhere that will let you exchange for similar if it doesn't work.

  • Anybody run this successfully with Windows Home Server and 2 GB ram?

    • I had this microserver running Server 2012 using 2GB RAM. Its all good.

  • I have a N40L running Mythbuntu on an SSD in the optical bay. I have a 2TB WD Red in one of the bays plus a small old 160GB in another. I read somewhere that you can't load the OS on to one of the bay drives if it is over 2TB. So, put your OS on a USB stick in the internal slot or on a SSD/HDD in the optical, or use a drive under 2TB in one of the 4 bays…

    :-)

    • Thanks for the tip. I was thinking of putting the OS on the included 250GB HDD. Is that a good approach?

      • You can do that but, it depends on your needs. Personally, I wanna save the bays for large drives. As you store data, it all adds up. I will eventually ditch my 160GB HDD. I just threw it in because it was a spare.

The 2TB HDD limit for the OS in one of the 4 drive bays has to do with the RAID controller. Allot of users are just using a USB pen drive on the internal port. I use a 60GB SSD on the optical SATA because its fast & I can do downloads & pre-process TV on the SSD to save constantly spinning up the HDD's. SSD just dumps downloads & recordings onto the drive when its done.

        :-)

Ps. Just a tip for those who want to use the optical bay sata: buy a right-angled connection SATA cable about 50-60cm (only has to be right-angled on one end). Also, you will need a MOLEX to SATA power adapter for SATA drives.

        • Thanks for the information, @simiot! I have just pulled the trigger on one of these and will set it up with only 2 disks initially and then expand later as needed. I will definitely pick up a SSD to add to the mix sometime soon.

        • Don't forget the hacked BIOS to enable full speed on the optical drive port, especially if you're putting an SSD in there.

        • Yes, you want AHCI enabled :-)

Just registered to say thank you ozbargain…

Has been waiting for this deal for almost a year, keep missing it by hours.

Now finally grabbed one with 3T HDD + 4G Egg + graphic card for just above 400 :D

  • Sweet, save $2.50 by bundling the gpu!

  • -1

im thinking of getting one, anyone come across a very good walk through guide in setting these up for a Storage device, i cant find a good simple one

    Thanks

  • Gave in and bought one along with a graphics card! Does anyone have any good recommendations for a cheap/affordable remote to use with xmbc?

    • There's a few free apps for android. I just grabbed a cheap IR receiver off eBay that I hope I can get to work with my harmony remote (although the receiver itself comes with a little remote).

I've also ordered a Logitech k700 Google TV mini keyboard/touchpad that is wireless with a USB dongle.

Something in all that should work.

      • Thanks Salem, if you don't mind do you have a particular link or model number for the receiver you've bought? I don't want to waste money and get the wrong one, preferably one that works with the "Unified" App from the play store. Or would the Unified app work without the receiver? seeing as they have desktop software.

        • If you're using an app to control it, you won't need an IR receiver or remote control at all. Just your phone.

  • Hi,
I am interested in getting the N40L with 4G ECC RAM 3TB HDD and graphics card.
but, I see the graphics card that goes with this system is out of stock.
I dont want to miss out on the combo price and also leave 1 item of the bundle that I would like to get.
can you advise if the graphics card will be available soon ?
    any alternative suggestions are welcome.

    thanks.

    • Hi rjathan,

More stocks of the graphics card are coming soon.

      Kind Regards
      Shopping Express

  • Op,

I sent you a private message. Are you able to add the 3TB HDD to my package and send me an invoice or something as such? It'll be much appreciated. I apologize for the inconvenience.

    • no worries - please check the reply

      • +1

        Thanks! All done :)

  • Thanks, I have purchased. Do I need the graphics card to stream media and audio to other computers / tv's / media players assuming they have the correct codecs?

    • No a gfx card is only needed if you wanted to use the microserver as a htpc/media player. You will only have to install an operating system to create shares and stream.

  • Wondering if someone could help me out. I already have a htpc with 3tb, but running out of space. What is the main difference between a nas and a htpc, they seem the same? Tks

    • Not sure why you got negged but a NAS is just a file server. Technically the n40l is just a PC which can be used as a NAS or Htpc (with an additional graphics card). Do you have the option of adding more hard drives to your HTPC?

      • Hi and thanks for reply. Not internally, which was why i was thinking i could use this deal to expand.

Havnt usually used ozbargain forum for questions, as the negging seems random

  • +1

Payment should be instant all done by Paypal. Good Service SE! :)

  • So to uses this as a NAS Drive I dont need to purchase anything else just add software to it?

To use this as a HTPC I would need to buy a GFX Card, that it? Would I need anything else?

    • to use it as a NAS drive you need to purchase the HDD's to go inside it.

      • +1

hahah yer I guessed that but for a HTPC will it just need the GFX Card and how would it compare to a Computer doing the same thing?

        • The GFX card would make it a HTPC but you can actually not get a card as there is onboard video (Radeon 4200) which can do upto 1920x1080 at the VGA port. But the GFX card gives you a few benefits:

          1. HDMI out as you're almost certainly connecting it to a modern Plasma or LCD
          2. HDMI gives you audio as well if you as there is no onboard audio in the N40L
          3. All the graphics and video processing will be done by the GFX card freeing up the CPU for the OS. This will avoid any slowdowns if you're doing alot of multitasking.

Examples of multitasking that use up CPU:
          1. uTorrent downloading
          2. Sabnzbd downloading
          3. NAS duty (uploading downloading files from various PCs around).
          4. Streaming media through XBMC or other uPNP servers installed to other media clients (i.e. second TV)
          5. Automatic OS patching (i.e. Windows Update)

        • Ok thanks
Sorry I am not up to date with this kinda stuff but wanna do something

Trying to figure out if I should get one of these to turn it into a HTPC or do I buy a new computer and do it to that?

I would like the HTPC to be able to record 2 shows at once too, can this HP N40L handle that?

My mate has a computer that records TV but when we view the FTA TV through his PC it never looks as good as watching it from the TVs tunner, it just not as clear as the HD signal and it looks a tad slower???

        • You would need a TV tuner… I don't know if this would suit you

        • +1

Yeah it will work fine. I have a dual tuner (USB) KWorld 499-2T and that works just fine. I have used it to record two programs at once and looks as good as TV tuner.

Look on EBay for USB twin tuners.

  • +1

Hi I too want to take advantage of this great deal to use as a HTPC box.
I already have the hdds. But would need to add a graphics card and sound card (optic as my amp does not take HDMI).
    Can you help me?
