        • I think VW is about to go bankrupt and Mini is bought by people that complain about not being able to afford a house whilst eating their $15 toasted bread slice with organic butter spread. Because of those reasons, I think it's best to avoid either brands.

          • -1

@Dollar Dreamer: Lol, typical VAG and German car hostility. good luck with driving your craps then! ;)

          • @Dollar Dreamer: Next you'll be saying Toyota is about to go bankrupt. You're talking about the second (and recently first) largest auto manufacturer in the world. They're not going to disappear overnight.

They still are enormously popular in Europe and North America. They can survive without China just fine.

            • +2

@tp0: Toyota deserves to go bankrupt but maintain their marketshare due to support from corrupt governments, petrol industry etc.

            • @tp0: Soon bankrupt. Like GM.

    • did you know a pane of glass is equivalent to 30+ sunscreen? that's without UV treatment… :0

Nice, this is ev my pocket can afford but my eyes are on cyberster which I can never afford 😭

This will get lost in the comments (or downvoted)

I recently test drove this ex-demo for 31k and a simiarly priced i30.

The MG4 is so much a superior ride it's actually insane.

    Ended up buying too!

    • +1

If you can charge at home overnight it's a no brainer. Pay maybe $1.50 per 100km versus ~$10 with the i30. I do 30,000km every year. $2500 annual saving in fuel costs would be very nice.

    • I know right?

      that 50:50 weight distribution…

I’m surprised a little but everyone’s different, so if it works then that’s all that matters. My feelings on a bunch of cars:

MG4 is ok, steering is way too light in default (can be changed), feels like an affordable car in every sense. Regen braking needs to be harder for single pedal driving.

Hyundai Kona 2019, good. Drives like a Hyundai and just feels like an electrified ICE car.

Of everything driven I liked the polestar 2 the most however my dad reckoned the rear passenger seats aren’t comfortable. But its not cheap at all.

BYD atto seems well rounded to me. No real complaints.
Tesla 3 is fairly nice (good audio, lane assist is great) but the rental I drove had crap suspension, was very rough over even small bumps.
RAV4 hybrid is smooth and just works. Typical Toyota
Subaru forester hybrid has the worst switch over from hybrid to petrol ever, not a fan.

      • RAV4 hybrid is smooth and just works. Typical Toyota

I have both the MG4 excite and the Toyota rav4 hybrid and I'd like to make a comment about this.

Weirdly enough, the in car software layer in the MG4 is MUCH better than the Rav4…

Its snappier to enable and use, also I can hop in and out of android auto quickly and easily with a button click.. Toyota dont even offer that capability. Once you've plugged your phone in.. you're stuck in AA and cant get out without unplugging the phone!

Its insanely stupid. I dont understand how Toyota let that go to the market like that.

        • Not true - there's a Toyota icon at the top of the menu icons on the right side. I admit it's not exactly intuitive as to it's purpose, it took me a bit to realise it's function in the missus' Rav

          • @Aldonis: what?
            https://i.redd.it/cwgx99dpqat91.jpg
Ours is the bigger screen on the left.

what icon are you talking about?
when you have AA plugged in, there is nothing but AA on the screen… there is no Toyota layer there at all.

            • @senectus: Click on the all apps icon as indicated here. This will list all the apps available to you. One of them has a Toyota icon that will bring you back to the Toyota layer.

  • this is better than the BYD Dolphin !

BYD Dolphin has significantly more rear legroom though

waiting for some EV to hit $25k mark then I'll buy it and just use it a a battery , oh if the gov. kick in V2G that is

  • Why haven’t Chinese car companies made a PHEV van yet? We only have the Ford Transit Custom PHEV (which is a low-roof) coming this year, with the VW Multivan coming later.
I’d absolutely kill for a high-roof PHEV van for converting into a motorhome.
Or maybe even a cab-chassis ute for making a class-C camper.

    • As someone with a toyota coaster ICE motorhome…. what's the PHEV attraction for you? Do you plan on also using it as a commuter (which I have previously, but it's unusual) which would have efficiency advantages in city traffic… but if your usage model is for lots of highway travel and not much commuting, I'm scratching my head about the value of the PHEV model.
Nothing wrong (in fact a helluva lot right) about having solar on the roof and house batteries, powering a variety of stuff including fridge, cooking and entertainment… but far less suitable for holdiday cruising motive power

      • One of the main things I like about PHEVs is that they also have plugs, so you can charge the batteries from home or an EV charging station, or even bidirectionally charge your home batteries and/or dump excess electricity into the grid.
They also often have large batteries that are built into the underlying platform/chassis itself, so no need for extra batteries that use space (unless you don’t want to use the main battery and instead want to use the auxiliary battery).
On top of that, having motors in the back and an engine-powered axle in the front allows for on-demand AWD, which opens up new areas for travel, as well as a generally smoother driving experience.
But I also like the prospect of having multiple energy sources, as well as higher fuel efficiency and being able to power a home in a pinch (e.g., blackout in a cloudy/rainy day).
Of course there are drawbacks compared to ICE or even EVs, but I am willing to compromise if it means having two energy sources on demand.
(Oh, and I can run an air-conditioner in the night without needing to turn on the engine.

        • Fair enough…
I agree with some value in PHEVs… either for stop start commuting, or short range driving where most/all the energy can come from the battery, and recharged by solar or cheap tariff.

I'm not familiar with PHEV vans…. PHEV cars I'm aware of haven't had very significant battery range, and of course using vehicle batteries for the motorhome house will debilitate that already modest battery capacity while parked up.

I hadn't thought of the AWD aspect…. a potential benefit.

hmmms about the multiple energy sources…. a pretty capable LiFePO4 capacity can be had "relatively" cheaply, when considering overall costs.
10KWh for about 4K for the muller energy batteries sometimes seen on ozbargain. You still of course need related stuffs like an inverter if using low volts batteries, and if applicable solar panels and controller.

I was going to point out the problem with Hi DC volt EV power converting to 240V, then had a dohh moment of no, you must have mentioned V2G supplying a 240V take off option…. but rereading you may or may not have considered it would need V2G to use that high volt dc inside the motorhome. A counter to that potential drawback is a PHEV charging while driving I thought… but google checking that looks like doing that will vary in effectiveness across makers/models. Some appear to only recharge on regen braking, others appear to have limited recharge ability. I don't know, but a consideration to be aware of.

I've never been able to read or have a good technical discussion about hybrid efficiencies…you and others mention higher fuel efficiency, but how that is achieved is an interesting question. Vehicles like the toyota rav for example have both ICE and PHEV versions… are the engines the same?

I understand that while running on battery fuel is saved, but that's not fuel efficiency as such. When the battery is depleted/used/flat, and the engine is only running on petrol, where does the increased fuel efficiency come from? Not from dragging around the extra battery and motor weight. If the hybrid doesn't have an alternator, but uses the electric motor as a generator, that saves a poofteenth of weight, but much less than the weight gain of the electrics. I see some efficiency on regen, particularly for drivers that don't anticipate ups and downs, and rigidly stick to one speed, but this doesn't happen on flat land.

          https://www.carsales.com.au/editorial/details/your-questions…

If a hyrbid is has ICE mechanicals designed for hybrid, rather than adapted from ICE… then an engine can be designed to powed a generator at high efficiency in a restricted rev range, and then drive the motor or charge the battery or both. The key part being tuned for a rather restricted rev range. This can only occur if the ICE drives a generator. But if the same engine setup is used in both ICE and hybrid, this can't happen.
I keep trying to learn about stuffs….

PS… while an EV has an inbuilt electric aircond which simplifies things greatly, modern "box" reverse cycle air conditioners (the type that used to fit in windows) are very efficient, and not power hungry. 500W max load isn't unusual, and powered off 10KWh of house batteries will give significant running time. Drawbacks of bulkiness though… That has me wondering if EV heating is from a reverse cycle compressor setup, or just resistive.

Corrr… that was a tsunami of words! Cheers

    • this article claims the Denza D9 (basically a PHEV minivan, Denza is a sub-brand of BYD) is coming to Australia. I'd take it with a pinch of salt, because I think they would want to focus on Sealion 7 (mid-size EV SUV) this year. https://www.carsauce.com/car-news/denza-d9-coming-to-austral…

      • That’s a minivan, not a full-size panel van.
Less space, you need to take out the seats, there’s a lot of complications to modifying a minivan into a motorhome, not to mention the reduced height and space.

I knew this car was a EV!!

people were bad voting me in a forum post somewhere (something like "how popular are EV's now?") for saying I count EV's by what I think looks like one.

    but I was right!!

I even pointed out this car as a EV to someone I was with, and they said no it's not a EV, but it is! 😃

    • The Novated Leasing EV FBT savings is available on battery EVs until 2027 (when it will be reviewed).

      • What month exactly will it ends?

        • April me thinks.

  • If Elon musk continue to sponsor Tesla, EV rivals with facelift models will have bigger and better competition in Australia and around the world. Currently Tesla model EVs are ranked the top amongst its class for various reasons, BYD, GWM and Geely are catching up with higher end specced models releasing soon.

    • -1

If elon musk continues his political career in the same manner, a lot of consumers won't buy tesla…..either because of their own moral values, or rapidly growing peer pressure against the stench of musk products.

Call me when we are $29,888

    • What’s your number?

        • yes at 29 drive away id be buyer
          cash sitting waiting

  • Be nice if there were some decent deals on the long range variant .

The standard one does not really have the range for me to get to state capital and back without charging, which is what I am looking for in an EV, so I need around 400 KM real guaranteed range even in cold weather (A friend with a model 3 said his range becomes problematic in cold weather )

  • anyone get a better price anywhere or freebies? What about the excite 61 or 64 model or whatever it is
in brissy and looking at one if i can get as cheap as possible

Nah, not a deal. OzBargain isn’t for smoke and mirrors deals.

MG need to get that price right back down before they get an upvoted deal from me.

Also while they’re at it, the 64kw Excite also needs a 10k price cut.
