Just picked up this very well reviewed 8 person instant tent by Coleman. This is the cheapest I've ever seen these - even second hand they sell for about this much. It takes about 1 minute to erect, has excellent weather sealing and can be split into two rooms which is great. Here are some specs and reviews:

  • This is a great tent!
We bought one for our last camping trip.
We had it up and ready to put the bed in, while our friends were still feeding the poles through their tents.
Eventually when ours gets old and dies on us, we will get another one. Hopefully there will be a bargain like this on here. :)

    • I've been looking for a new tent after having my last torn apart over Xmas on the Yorkes.
How big is the packed size? We have limited space in the boot of our car.

      • They're big - thats the problem with most of the instant type tents (oztent, coleman, blackwolf)… even my 3 man EPE Speedy Tent just gets into my x-trail and struggles in the previous model forester as its footprint is 90x90cm.

I have a coleman awning, which I've found easier to lash to the roof racks when going away… the bag is decent - but if worried about rain just wrap it in a tarp.

      • This fits in the back of my VZ Commodore with ease

      • It fits in the back of the mazda 2 with the rear seats folded down.
it takes up less space than our previous 12 man coleman. I dunno about getting it into the boot of a car though.

  • I have the Instant Up 6, got it for $200.

Only thing I don't like about it is how heavy and big the tent is in the bag.
The Instant Up 6 doesn't have a room divider so this is pretty kwl.

  • Pretty good and very tempted to buy…. but my local don't have it….

    BUT!

    Postage is only $5.49

    Total including delivery
    $304.49

    Pretty cheap!.

Just rang them (New Store at Belconnen), said they are in transit and will reserve me one when they come in.

    Thanks again OP, cheers.

Not sure if the BCF model is the 2013 full length fly because it says:

"3/4 seam sealed fly with water proofed side walls".

I'd pay the extra $30 and get 2013 fully fly model.

    • +1

I was thinking the same. By the sounds of the description, this isn't the full length fly.

Further to that I thought these tents were initially released without a fly?

      • yeah, most of the vids don't show the fly at all… curious to know how hard it is to put on. With blackwolf turbo ones, the trick is to throw the fly over the top of it first, then step in and raise it: saves trying to throw the fly over.

        • Should be quick & easy to set up, Coleman quote it can be done in 2 minutes.

As for the non-fly version, it had big condensation problems. For the Australia version it looks like they solved that problem by changing the ceiling design in conjunction with a fly (like most tents).

The fly started as just a roof version, then 3/4 version, now a full version fly.

    • Also need to mention that the 4WD/Camping show is on this month at Rosehill - I cleaned up at the Oztrail one in Canberra last year, and will probably hold out till the sydney one.

      • Bugger, I've already missed the Caravan & Camping show for Adelaide (Was in Feb). This must be the winter show(?), because the last show I went to was held in August 2012!

    • As per the picture, this is the 3/4 fly - very easy to put on. Its perfect for qld wa and nt weather as the windows actually get air through. But if you need a cold climate tent for winter, sure, pay the extra for the full fly version. (The 3/4 fly was actually part of the reason I wanted this model)

      • The 3/4 fly has LESS ventilation. The new full fly has sep. windows on the fly to allow full air ventilation… I've owned both.

  • … It takes about 1 minute to ERECT … :o
    That long????

    • Dude. It's 4.2m

      • -1

        4.2m in 60 secs = 70 cm per sec
        Very good …

        • or 7cm per second, for those of us using conventional arithmetic

  • On ours, there are loops at the bottom of each pole that the fly just hooks into. very quick and easy.
We got ours from BCF and used it over the Christmas break in very heavy downpour. The tent was fine.
One thing to note is if you break a pole on this tent, I think you'll be up for a new tent. I'm not sure whether they make replacement parts? You would have to be pretty rough with your belongings to break a pole though.

  • This is the OLD version.

The new model has a full length fly, and has a LOT more airflow. Ignore the comments above, the old half fly blocks the windows and stops ventilation. Absolutely sucks in summer.

Many places sell the new model for around ~$40-50 difference ie. http://www.kellyscamping.com.au/p/8083076/coleman-instant-up…

Overall the instant up tents are excellent value and great tents. Mine has been used and abused many times. Next step up would be a decent canvas BlackWolf Turbo tent but they are nearly double the price.

  • We bought the 2013 model before Easter for $337 delivered off eBay (Camping Central Australia store - a few all had the same price). Arrived in 3 working days, used over Easter.
Couldn't find the 2013 model in retail stores, my local BCF didn't even have the 8P (though did have the 6P & 10P, older models).
Full length fly works well, though mesh in the tent roof like the old 6P model on display at BCF might be better during summer, time will tell. Even though it was 5°C over Easter & 20°C during the day, had no condensation issues. The front awning is a bit hard to zip up & down while inside, but need to put down at night as rain could come in on an angle onto the tent door. Tent door panel could be a little more taut so it didn't sag so much (so door zip could be opened one hand while holding a squirming baby). Otherwise, very happy with the tent.
