  • Mum is after a 15.6" notebook. Requirements: Word, Excel, PPT, Browsing, decent battery life, something that lasts atleast 2-3 years. Nothing too strenuous.

Would this deal be a good one to buy? Is it a 5400rpm or 7200rpm drive?

for this spec and the price, you cant be wrong, it is more than enough for your mom requirement, but for HP can hold at least 3 years, I am not sure about that

I dont think this battery will last 2-3 years. It will last only 2-3 hours….

Seriously though if you want a decent battery. 6 hours look for one that says 8 cell or 6 cell battery. Also imo Windows 8 needs a touch screen..

    • Ta, obviousl you do know what I meant though. Na I know batteries only last for 1-1.5 years. I think as long as it gives 2-3 hrs of battery, she'll be happy.

Need to buy her one today, would you go for the current deal, or this one http://www.officeworks.com.au/retail/products/Technology/Com…

Brought one of these a few weeks ago for my wife. She loves it, but it was about 5 years since the previous upgrade.

Windows 8 takes a while to get around, b4 getting back to what your used too - touch screen would help, but you can revert most things as well.

touchpad on these can be used for scrolling, pinch to zoom etc, much like a touchscreen device, you just use the touchpad instead.

    • Metro UI definitely needs a touch screen, but if you install Classic Shell, and replace any pre-installed "app" versions of programs with "desktop" versions, Windows 8 becomes very much like earlier versions of Windows (i.e. useable with a mouse).

  • Metro does not need a touchscreen, I have one and I still use the mouse. You'll mostly find yourself using it to access the shortcuts you placed there.

  • Cheaper version here with slower CPU… http://www.shoppingexpress.com.au/buy/hp-650-intel-1.8ghz-15…

437$ including shipping and extra 2GB RAM!

  • Would something like this new ok for moderate gaming? Nothing tooo heavy, I just want to play hitman absolution smoothly without frying the laptop.

    • You will need a Radeon 7670m, 7570m or equivalent Geforce discrete graphics to play modern games like Hitman.

Anything less, well you end up with rather unplayable framerates (unless you can stand to play at resolutions lower than 720p)
