Lowepro Orion SLR Daypack 200. $39. Dick Smith

420

My dear wife was looking at these in Domayne and they had them on "special" for $115 down from $129. Pleeease, a Domayne special!

I suggested that a quick search online might provide an even better "special". Sure enough, Dickies has them on sale for $39.

The bag is surprisingly light but still quite well padded to protect your SLR awesomeness.

Pick up only. No delivery.

Just as an FYI - I had a look futher and eBay has them around $68, BH Photo has them for $65 and Amazon has them for $69 but all of these do not include delivery charges.

  • Good price, but no availability near 3000 or 3145.

The Good Guys also sell this at 60 bucks, and I assume they have better availability.

  • its 64.95 on amazon http://www.amazon.com/Lowepro-LP36329-Orion-DayPack-200/dp/B… so its a pretty decent price (edit: I just realised OP already noted amazon price :P)

I was lucky enough to snap one of these up from DSE for $31.20 a while back, I'm very happy with it for the price. Even at $39 it's still a great deal! :)

me too, thanks to your post in the other thread. You should have posted it then!

  • Anyone tried to get a price match on one of these yet? Officeworks? Harvey Norman?

Great price for a decent bag

  • Well Brisbane seems to be all out too… 2 locations with 'low stock'

  • Would these be okay as a bag for school or uni?

    :S

These bags aren't very good for photographers as they dont have any features that photographer look for in a bag. Like the above poster said, you could walk into any store other than DJ or Myer and get much better bags for around $80-90. These are at around $50-55 normally, certainly not selling at RRP of over $100 at most stores.

Where??? The cheapest I've seen them; other than DSE of course; is ~$65 sans shipping.

If you can link to a better product at the sub-$40 price point, then we're all ears…

  • Nice find… I got my camera bag from Tamrac so far so good. However am looking at these back pack types of bag but not sure how quick can you get your camera out of them.

  • For anyone who wants to be able to get their DSLR out of their bag quickly, I suggest not getting one of these bags.

I own the Lowepro Rover Plus which is similar in concept to the Orion (except more heavy duty and with the AW cover) and it's cumbersome having to put the bag down and unzip the split compartment in order to get the camera out, especially when the top compartment is full.

Better designs will have a side opening to get the DSLR out without having to put the bag down. This includes the Slingshots, Fastpacks and, if they still make them, the Primus. The Primus Minimus in particular is great for storing both a DSLR and non-camera stuff when you're traveling (doesn't fit a laptop though but my DLSR gear is heavy enough - lol).

i have one and i dont like it. you cannot quickly get the camera out. you have to take the bag off your shoulders and put it on the ground then unzip it. the only thing i like is the strap at the bottom to hold your tripod. i suggest getting something with side zippers to have quick access to camera and accessories

    • If you want to take photos quickly, you might be better off investing in a decent P&S camera…DSLR photography isn't about quick snaps, it's about quality…which ipso facto takes more time.

      • Yes its not as portable as a pocked sided P&S. However One of the main benefits of a SLR is its speed - ie ability to capture the exact moment with its superior focusing and having great control over the shutter. So i reckon it is important to be able to take it out use it quickly …

        • People with deep pockets, both figuratively and literally, can embrace cameras like the Sony RX100 and NEX6. Near DSLR-quality in a small form factor. The RX100 can fit in some pockets. It has very little shutter lag too. That said, good photos are more dependent on the photographer rather than the equipment. ;)

If being able to use your camera quickly is a priority, then you really should have your DSLR out & ready on location…carrying it around in any bag, regardless of design or price, kinda defeats the purpose, eh? It's like, 15s draw vs 30s…negligible in the big scheme of things for the unprepared.

The other thing to remember too, is that backpack bags are by nature more cumbersome than traditional camera bags…but, the tradeoff is offset by the fact of when travelling, potential thieves only see a person with a backpack; not an easy mark with an expensive looking camera kit! ;)

Backpacks are also much easier on the shoulders and back. I carried a NEX with the 18-200 lens (amongst other stuff) on my last big trip in a bag that was slung on my shoulder, going across my body. After many hours of walking, it became rather painful.

  • Good deal

  • WHAT!? So cheap! Just grabbed mine at Marion SA - not many left at all.

Also notable: comes with a 12 month free subscription to an E-magazine (Photoreview.com.au)

It's got the code on the Lowepro tag.
