620

EggMaps HD is an iPad-only app, which provides Google's Maps utilizing the iPad's full screen (rather than just running the iPhone version of Google Maps).

To see the difference visually, check out these images.

EggMaps HD is free in the app store today.

See the app store page for more info (click the big egg above).

A new release is coming very soon, which adds the ability to drop markers and improves street view usability.

I assume you still need wifi/3G/4G to download the maps?
Is there any app that has maps built in and you can just use your GPS and navigate?

    • Yes to both questions.

The ones with maps built-in are either very expensive, or they use open streetmap. Google's terms of service prevent 3rd-party developers (like myself) caching their maps. If you want Google's maps (as most people do), you need an active connection.

      • +1

That's not necessarily true.. Google maps have an "Offline" function that allows you to save a section of maps for offline use. I'm actually travelling through Europe and using it right now!

The offline functionality only allows you to save sections of the map, bu tthe limit is more than enough to save the entire map of a major city.

GPS still works with offline maps. The only other limitations is that you can't search addresses or use other functionality (get directions etc.) without an active connection and you can save something like a maximum of 5 offline maps.

You're checking ozbargain from Europe? That's a dedicated bargain hunter!!

        • +2

It is true. Google themselves are not bound to their own Terms of Service, while 3rd-party developers are.

If you find a non-Google app that caches Google Maps, the app won't be around for long.

    • Sygic for IOS for offline maps that can be used the same as a dedicated GPS.
      No internet connection required.

I use it on our Android phones and no longer have need for a GPS in the car… works perfectly.

    • @Cardz - yes, MetroView Australia.

IMHO, this has been free so many times that I can't consider this a deal anymore, rather just advertising.

    • actually that is the point, in marketing its called promoting… like when dse do 10% off apple computers every now and again… why sca do 20% off everything every now and again… etc etc

    • +2

Since when is something that usually costs money but is now FREE not a bargain?

      Thanks for me OP.

When it's something that is available for free all the time within the OS

        • I hope you are not talking about the joke that is apple maps. For anyone that likes using google maps, this is a greatly improved google map experience for the iPad.

        • -2

There's 2 things in the OS that will do this: apple maps AND maps.google.com in safari (or chrome (another FREE app)).

So… why would you pay for this (or vote something +) when it's free all the time on the same device with the same functionality?

        • Because I have actually used it and like it over your other suggestions.

And for FREE the price is right.

        • So… you wouldn't pay for it?

        • Reasonable question. I think it is good, definitely would buy at 99 cents, don't think I would buy at $4.95. But I rarely buy any apps over $2. Just an app tightass, that is why I am on OzB.

But poor rep has put a lot of work into this, and he is now trying to get the name out there to create some interest and hopefully make some sales.

        • I will admit i downloaded it one of the many other times it was free. It was on my ipad for no more than 10 minutes. Didn't see the value in the app at that time, still don't see it now.

You need a network connection (3/4G, wifi)for it to work. So why not use one of the before mentioned options?

To me, this app is a lot like bottled water. Pay premium for something that's free.

    • Just like every other Apple app, free for a day is part of the advertising. This has not been free since 7th Feb, so if you do not have it grab it today. Good app.

Yep. Has not been free for a while now. The rep for this has been very professional with his previous posts on OzBargain and even taken on improvement suggestions. This is a great app. I personally appraite the post.

After using the app since January, I willl now be letting friends know to download today for free.

    • so its basically free once every month?

      • quite a few ios apps are like this, sales every couple of month. So cheap bastards like us will get it free or at a reduced prices but the normal people will pay the standard price because they don't want to wait or don't know about the sales.

  • +2

    Thanks, OP.

  • Free again…. Well, I suppose more apps should do this.

  • +2

OP why haven't you put a face on the egg yet? as I suggested a few deals ago.

    • +2

The icon is a self-portrait, from a time before I grew a beard and started wearing glasses.

  • +1

Thanks OP. Just got it. It's great!

  • When you choose a start and end address, it gives a list of directions. But how do you close the list and see the map?

    • +1

The "route" button at the top of the screen will be yellow. Tap it and the directions will be hidden.

      • OIC, thanks. I thought the little man on the top left would do it, but it doesn't do anything that I notice. Is it supposed to do something?

        • +1

He's for street view, as per the web version of google maps. Slowly drag him and drop him on the place where you want street view to appear. In the next version there's an easier way (currently awaiting app store approval).

Here's a little youtube demo that may answer some of your questions.

        • +1

Thanks for the link to the demo.

          Great app!

  • Your link to the egg maps picture is wrong. Both pictures show the same thing.

easter is a time of giving eggs….. and eggmaps

  • eggcelent timing i might add although this thread will be a bit cracked with all the scrambled brains trying to figure out how to lay the road

  • REP, there is one thing you should improve in the app and that is the street view. It is really hard to navigate and the 'cross' at the top right hand corner is hard to press.

    • +2

Yep, +1. You're absolutely correct, thanks.

In the next release both aspects are dramatically improved. If you downloaded this version you'll automatically get the next release (already submitted to the app store and awaiting approval). It should be on your iPad in 1-2 weeks.
