It sparked my interest as I had been looking at ultrabooks recently and the highest quality/best bang for buck ultrabooks seemed to be the Dell XPS 13 for $1299 or the ASUS Zenbook UX31A for $1288.

But then this popped up, and according to the specs and reviews it compares very well with both the Dell and Asus in all areas, and it's $200 cheaper. But it is a Direct Import model, which may turn some people off. I think the correct model number is Samsung NP900X3D which is apparently the Silver colour direct import version of the local NP900X3C-A03AU.

Vision Tech had the windows 7 version of this for $999 a couple months back I think, but this still seems like a good deal to me. Full Specs here: http://www.samsung.com/au/consumer/pc-peripherals/notebook-p…
Let me know what you think. Only 1.16kg! This is the thinnest lightest 13.3" ultrabook on the market isn't it? I want one, but no touchscreen or dual usb3 is holding me back :(

  • +1 for solid service and price, but windows 7 versions of these laptops are around the same price.

I know windows 8 is a pain in the ass, but get with the future. Nah, you're right, the only way I would use Windows 8 on a non touch screen is with Start8. And even then it's annoying.

      • +3

Honestly, you get used to it pretty quickly. I don't use any of the Windows 8 Metro apps, but it's actually quite a zippy OS. Some things can be a pain to find, but it's not too bad.

  • I've bought one from oo.com.au for $997 3 weeks ago, but with Windows 7. This deal is not bad considering most Australian retailers have sold out on the Series 9 (very hard to find, around the $1000 mark). I wanted specifically a Australian model as my platinum cc gave me an extra yr warranty.

I was in the same boat as you Riczter in being unable to decide touch vs non-touch, but I decided to buy a "normal" ultrabook that would last me this year and look at the options next year. Touch at the moment is not essential for me, I think I'll wait for Haswell Surface Pro!

BTW the laptop is awesome, you'll love it if you do decide to take the plunge. Windows 8 can be used same as windows 7, I would buy series 9 with Win 8 again if I had a chance, even without touch screen.

    • Hi from what i read it can boot up in under 10 seconds is this true from your experience. Is the webcam clear for skype. What are the things you like about the laptop.

      • ive got a 3 series Samsung on windows 8 64bit (i7 3rd gen) not on an SSD (5400rpm hdd) and it also boots up in 10 seconds! windows 8 all the way!

        • Gavman what are the specs of your laptop, Is it an ultrabook no ssd and it boots up in 10 seconds, does windows 8 boot faster than windows 7.

        • +1

          see http://www.centrecom.com.au/catalog/mini_product_info.php/?p…

Its not an ultrabook.. but its quite light (2.2kg) for a full fledged notebook. If you are look for compact you have to expect that the power of the specs r going to be compromised. This 3 series packs very decent specs and I was able to pick on up for $720 a couple weeks back when it was on sale.

Yes I would say 10-15 seconds (depending if plugged in or not), Ive used windows 7 for the last 4 yrs and just now using windows 8 and I am realy surprised how effient it is. I think it was def a focus for microsoft

It boots very fast, somewhere there if not less. From sleep, it is basically as fast as you get your lid opened. I haven't used skype or webcam.

I like the keyboard, really good to type on, that's coming from a very comfortable keyboard on a HP Elitebook. The trackpad is also nice and big, the gestures are easy to use. The screen is definitely the best bit, one of the best and the brightest I've seen and much better than the Mac Air. Build quality is also top notch, not a flex anywhere and easy to hold with one hand, feels like a solid frying pan!

        • +2

very nice mate I like what you have written especially the last line easy to hold with one hand, feels like a solid frying pan. good review.

        • Thanks, full disclosure: I've got a minor complaint: the SSD. It's too small (~80GB usable) and slower (comparatively) than other SSDs. Luckily, the mSATA SSD is user upgradable. When I get a chance/money, I'll grab a Crucial m4 256GB mSATA for around $220.

    • Yeah I'm definitely looking forward to what the haswell refresh brings us. Hopefully faster more efficient CPUs with better integrated GPUs, longer battery life, and above all, some decent quality full hd bloody touch screens! Cheaper high capacity SSDs would sure be nice too but that's just wishful thinking.

Over $1000. So if its shipped direct from overseas, presumably customs will want 10% more!

    • nah dont think so. $1088 is the total cost you pay flingshot. They do the rest from their end. As far as i know.

      • +1

That is right these are not drop shipped, they are being shipped here first so you get a GST receipt.

        • Means we can claim TRS???

  • +1

Yeah, almost everything you buy comes from overseas at some point (ie china) as long as you buy from an Australian retailer in australia and get a GST invoice and it is over 300 you should be eligible provided you meet any other requirements. Travelling within 30 days etc etc.

  • I don't know if anyone is following this post but is the Sammy worth it over the Thinkpad deal atm?? http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/98360

    They are priced quite similarly.

    • +2

Yeah they are pretty similar in specs and functionality. The samsung is smaller (13.3") thinner, and lighter (at 1.16kg vs 1.35). I'd say it comes down to what you like the look of more. Personally I'd go the samsung.

      • Thanks for the fast reply! I'll have to go down to JB or something and have a play, but I im quite sold on the Samsung.

  • I've heard that the series 9 ultrabooks are very hard to find in australia at the moment. You may find it hard to find a model to play with.

    • Damn I did a quick search you're right, the 15inch is find-able but oh well I'll have to try that imagine it smaller.

    • Had a play with one @ Harvey Norman a few days ago.

      VERY sleek and fast.

The build quality gives Apple a run for its money..

  • +1

the 15" i've heard is very different. Much worse build quality and much less nicer screen. So don't let these things put you off coz they are better on the 13.3" :)

  • Edited the battery life. 10 hours was a bit ambitious. Sorry Flingshot :P

    • That was from the Samsung specs I believe, and like most of estimates probably a bit ambitious. I think they do it to compete with the macbook "guesstimates".

    • From my experience, I easily get 6+ hours (wifi on) using Samsung power profile, and that's from 80% battery (one of the Samsung settings so battery don't overcharge = lasting longer). Don't know how Verge test their battery life. 10 hours is probably not achievable in the real world.

  • Flingshot rep, when will this deal end? Transferring funds takes some time on my end.

    • No end date just when stock sells out, we have about 10 units left at last count.

      • Thanks for your reply. Another question, Samsung usually offers 24-month warranty on the Series 9 ultrabooks, is this the case for ultrabooks ordered from your site?

        • I am not aware of a 24m warranty on the 9 series (at least there is nothing listed on their site), but in any case these come with 1 year international warranty.
