Tasker for Android on sale for $1.99 (down from $6.49)

700

Tasker is on sale for the first time since I've had an Android device (about a year). Not sure if it's the first time ever, but it's certainly rare for them to have a sale. I guess this is related to their new UI. Get it while you can!

For those who don't know (you must be new to Android?), Tasker is an app that allows automation of your device's functions. I tried it in the past, but to be honest, I've been using AutomateIt, because it's been able to do pretty much everything I wanted and it was a bit simpler to work with (not to mention it was 1/5 the price!). Tasker used to have a super ugly UI but the new update might have fixed that. I've just bought the app but haven't tried it out yet.

Damn it, i just typed up a whole thing for this as well. Good job on beating me :(

Also a great deal, most people should buy now if they ever think they will need it.

    • Sorry, that's annoying when that happens!

I currently use Llama, a free based location profile based app. Is Tasker worth the $2 over Llama?

      • Yes it has a ton of options!
I bought it at $6 but it's easily worth $2
theres a bit of a learning curve but you can do so much with it.

      • +2

If I recall correctly, Llama was very focused on the location-based stuff, as you said. Tasker does a lot more. If Tasker is too complex for your needs AutomateIt has been great for me. Unless it's changed since I bought it, it's only $1.54 or something like that.

        • Thanks. Bought it and was able to set up a couple of profiles fairly simply.

        • +5

Llama is capable of location-based stuff, but does time-based stuff too.
Also does location-AND-time based stuff. Like… turn to silent at 10pm, but only if I'm at home.

I don't know what this paid app does, but Llama does heaps. And it's free.

        • hahaha Llama's creator team is called KebabApps

          yes I am easily amused:P

      • My question too,
Llama is simply awesome, the list of conditions and actions is pretty much endless.

What additional options does this have over llama?

    • good on you for caring enough to share.

    • They have just updated the UI to fit with the Holo theme, and this sale is probably as promotion for that.

  • When does this deal expire?

certain apps even if you never use, you must buy.

    Tasker/TiBackup/PowerAmp are some of them.

    lol.

    • Do you think the premium version of ti backup is worth it over the free version? Same with Rom Manager?

      • Free version do just one backup, very good for one time apps backup/restore during phone change or software upgrading.

Pro can do application freeze/unlimited backups/cloud uploads/System app and bloatwares remove - well worth.

ROM Manager is all in one tool including backups though i find TiB is better. I bought ROM Manager too, but i used that only for blocking Ads (recently this function is removed)/DNS change/Root filesystem explorer. Long ago i tried some theme change and soft bricked phone, so not experimenting much on this app.

        • Thanks, great info. But rom manager would also allow me to flash and download roms without using a computer or going into my boot loader?

      • If you like to experiment with ROMs, yes Ti backup pro is a must. Who wants to manually accept the restoration of every app? The pro version does it as a batch, among other things.

        • +2

If you buy Titaniumbackup pro I suggest buying it from their website rather than market. You get a text file that you put on the root of your sdcard/internal memory and then from inside the app you can go into menu and generate an apk of the version you are using. That way whenver you change roms you just reflash the zip it generated as part of your install and it will automatically register it as pro because of the license txt so you have full version before even setting up your Google Account on your device

  • its $2.86 when i check the play store, not $1.99

Good video to get you started https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BEhnOJl5mTo. Though now there is easier to use alternatives such as AutomateIt and Llama.

    • Do I need to grow a goatee to use the app?

      • +3

        Mandatory.

Seems like a real battery drain, and I see no real use for it.

    • Well yeah, it does everything you can do manually, like turn on aeroplane mode when you go to sleep, and turn on silence before going into work. But its value comes in doing things automatically. And no, it doesn't even register as a battery drain on my phone.

      • Time required to setup > than wiping down and clicking silent IMO

        • set it once then forget forever.
better than wiping down every night.

beside its just one of the smallest function of this app.

i use it to set automate my wifi on when im at home then turn protection off.
And turn protection on when im go out or using other wifi sid that not on my white list.

not too advance example, but it really help automating many of my task

        • setup is permanent mate,

i plug in my headphone and my music player (mort) automatically plays, unplug it and music player automatically quits, plug it again and the music resumes from where I stopped

i turn on bt and once connected, music plays to my car stereo automatically

i turn on wifi and my phone auto turns off 3g data (too bad no auto 2g for newer phones)

i could set any app to disable screen off timer when it's on , fantastic use on stopwatch/timer

        • None of that seems worth it to me. Each to their own I guess.

        • +2

It really depends how much of a hacker/programmer you are. If you have the mindset then setting things up so as to make the phone/tablet do useful stuff is a key USP. If you are ….. an iphone user …. then it's probably of less interest.

For $1.99 it's well worth the money, if you have the capability of writing programs.

        • I'm a developer, setting this up would be no problem. I guess I value my time outside of work differently.

  • tempted… I've been using Llama for ages and love it. Have even donated to the dev (with Telstra's funny money!). Might grab it, then one day find a use for it!

  • This will definitely come in handy, thanks OP.

    • You're welcome :-)

This was the first app I bought (at full price) when I activated my Telstra prepaid SIM and even though the price went down, I don't regret it.

I haven't had much time to play with it but so far I've used it to reply to SMS sent by specific contacts automatically, make a button/app to toggle 3G (otherwise I'd have to go into settings>data and toggle it there every time) and turn wifi/3g off after hours to save battery.

Regarding the battery drain mentioned above, I have seen no evidence of this whatsoever, at least not for the small tasks I use it for.

  • I just bought this app,

What are some of the features you guys use from this app?

    • I have a menu with all of my media players pop up when I insert by headphones, and read me my texts if my headphones are in when I receive them
I have an email and a missed call popup.
I have it set to turn wifi, data, etc off while I'm sleeping, and put silent on when at work.
I have it turn on wifi to check if a connection's available every 15 minutes to save battery.
Plus others… It's an awesome app.

    Hey Android Smarta$$es,

Have you found a good non root backup solution ?

I would love to use Titanium backup but don't want to root are there any other options?

    • Looks like I offended at least 4 people,

guys I meant "Smart@$$" in the "friendly @#$% " sense that, anyone smart enough to use tasker, might know about this solution.

I love android, just looking for a non root backup solution.
