Domino's are saying they're Chefs!!!!!?

I recently went on to domino's website… they are now calling themselves CHEFS?

How demeaning for those poor people who spend 5 years training as a chef, put in the hard work and also probably pay for their own equipment to become a chef.

Domino's should retract their statement NOW!!

I can't believe what they have quoted… my god, you walk into one of their shops and you're greeted by a 16 year old getting paid probably 7 dollars per hour.

It's a complete joke.

Thank you, Karsta.

    Domino's are saying there Chefs!!!!!?

    * they're (you got that right in the first sentence so there's no excuse)

My eyes hurt from all your shouting with CAPS.

Sorry just a bit wild :) I know it's uncalled for but being classed as chefs is Crap. Sorry again.

All I can say is show your disgust with your wallet. Whining about it won't do anything, they are free to say what ever they want.

    It's a complete joke

You're not from MKR are you? :P

  • My father moved to Australia in the late 70's and has been in the restaurant business since (note he doesn't have any 'formal' qualifications). Does this not make him a chef?

    • +1

Again Chefs should be recognised! I'm not dissing your Dad at all it's Domino's .

    • +1

A know many sous who started off in the dish pit and worked their way through piss and gristle towards running a kitchen. Props to your Dad.

Line cooks should deserve the same respect if you ask me. Chefs get the backlash and gratitude at the end of service if his/her team did/didn't perform well.

Agree with you there, kind of how chiropractors call themselves "doctors". What a farce.

I've worked a quite a few commercial kitchens over the years…you'd be surprised to know how much of the actual cooking is done by apprentices & jumped-up kitchen hands! IME the 'chef' mostly flaps around pontificating & whining! ;)

  • Chefs do an Apprenticeship to become Qualified. Anyone who does not is simply a cook…

    • Exactly right so is my son he's done 4 1/2 yrs of cooking in one place but got offered an apprenticeship and his former chef he'd worked all those years for wouldn't sign a piece of paper just to take him to his 2nd stage in his apprenticeship which his words were not repeatable here but let's say hey was disgusted with his former employer. But my son is enjoying his apprenticeship and his head chef is the best. You all deserve recognition in your jobs. Cheers

Domino's paid one or more professional chefs to create the new Chef's Best menu. They don't have a single claim about the people who follow the chef's recipes at the local Domino's pizza joint.

The jobs available at a Domino's franchise are Drivers, Managers, In-Store and Scooter. Notice they are not hiring chefs, because a chef already made the recipes. The In-Store will make the pizzas.

Notice how the 'chefs' haven't been named…I tasted some of these last night, I can understand why the creators would prefer to remain anonymous! :p

      • +1

When they release their previous range, they did mention who their chef was.
If I am correct, there is a number of chef when work in their developmental kitchen.

I don't hear people whining about how Neil Perry and Gordan Ramsay aren't chef when they have their meals on Qantas and Singapore Airlines respectively.

Did you know that the crap that Qantas serves you may actually be a Neil Perry creation?
I am still waiting for someone to say that given the crap they are served, Neil Perry isn't a chef.

        • I'll agree with you on Perry, he's not a chef's arse IMHO.

I got suckered into going to Rockpool a few years back & the mediocrity of the food was only matched by the outlandishness of the prices…I kinda wish I'd just burned my ~$300 & saved myself the experience!!!

    • +1

This is the same at pretty much all major food chains, maccas etc all have professional chefs who create and design the range etc.

    • did some IT work for dominos in their head office. It is one professional chef who designed all their pizzas and does up the demo models for commercials etc. He's the guy you see in all their commercials etc.

Once he was done with the pizzas for the latest ad they'd drop them into the IT department as we were right near his kitchen. let me just say they tasted 500x better than the normal pizzas you get from dominos.

  • +1

Any chef who designs that crap should hang their head in shame.

    • +2

Dominos the franchise would approach numerous qualified chefs, giving them large sums of money and asking them to come up with a pizza topping that 'works' using select topings.

These chefs would then come up with their 'recipies' and present them to Dominos. The frachise picks what toppings they're going to go with and start a new range for advertising.

In no way, shape or form should any chef have to 'hang their head in shame' for doing what was asked of them.

      You should.

      • not true at all, they have one chef who works for them on a full time basis.

However part of his job is that he has to stay within limits for the cost of each pizza to ensure maximum profitability etc.

How in gods name are Dominos, Pizza Hut etc still in business? They make such a terrible, bland "pizza", and its not nearly cheap enough to get over the lack of quality. Melbourne (where I am) has an abundance of great quality, cheap (generally) family-run pizza places, yet Dominos et al pop up and people seem to frequent them.

I know we all have different tastes, but how can anyone choose Dominos over a local pizza place, especially when the local place is almost always cheaper or the same price?

    • Most proper pizza stores around me cost ~$15 where as at dominos and pizza hut you can get pizzas for around $7

      • +1

I still remember $5 large pizza back few years ago (with coupons of course) is the norm. Can you mentioned any local shop that sells pizza cheaper than that??? Even the frozen pizza from coles/woolworths is not exactly cheaper after you factor in cooking time and cost. Unless they are on special.

        • -3

Why mention something that happened years ago? But yes, when those deals were on, the two local pizza shops near me both had $4.50 pizzas. These days my locals normal price is $5.95 for a large, and they accept all the chains vouchers and make a far superior product.

Amazing how people are so staunch in defending dominos, makes me laugh that the obese tasteless units here even bother to neg. obviously some people here have never had real pizza, enjoy your flavoured over priced cardboard!

        • +2

I do not defend dominos, in fact I am so envy of you having those local shops nearby. There is none where I live.

        • So True

        • These still occasionally exist on customer appreciation days etc.

It wasn't that long ago that my store that $3.95 Hawaiian large pizzas for a day.

        • +1

If millions of people nationally/globally didn't enjoy dominos pizzas, they would be broke by now. Simple.
They have certain formula that satisfies a certain market.

    • You so mad. I love how people get so mad about how shit franchise pizzas are compared to local places. I don't see anyone comparing burgers from McDonalds and saying how shit they are compared to a burger ordered at a cafe. And for the record I have never seen a local pizza place that had anything near the same size for the same price as Dominos or Pizza Hut, stop wasting your time comparing them.

  • Don't you like that? Stop buying food from them! I did after the "Game changer" campaign. They won't make an idiot from me twice.

  • +1

Dominos have over 65,000 stores across 4 countries.

Whatever your 'beef' ;) They must be doing something right.

    I love Dominos Pizza!

  • +1

This is so disrespectful to the Chefs at Hungry Jacks.

A Chef is the head cook, if they have a head cook, they have a chef.

Who cares if you are greeted by a 16 year old getting $7 an hour, Good on him, I say.

I haven't had a dominos pizza for a while now, but will try the new ones.

    • +2

That is nonsense, a Chef is the top cook in a restaurant, Dominos is a takeaway establishment. People have to train to be a chef which also requires the attaining of a diploma in food hygeine. Most Dominos would be run by a hands-on franchisee, he doesn't need any sort of a diploma for food preparation whatsoever. I really can't stand this dumming down of our language. Why can't a 5yo kid be called a pupil and not a student anymore? Dominos employees who sprinkle various, already prepared ingredients onto an already prepared and bought pizza base, is not in any shape or form a Chef. In fact it's hard to think of them as being cooks, anymore than a bread roll filler at Subway should be described as a cook or chef on the basis that they fill rolls and toast them for you.

The Chef in a restaurants kitchen doesn't have to cook all the time, he's responsible for the running of the kitchen, ordering ingredients, setting the menu, maintaining the kitchen staff and for it's hygiene.

      • If you are excluding people who don't have proper training to be a chef, then a lot of "restaurants" are not really restaurants.

This including places like hogs breath and many more.

So in the end your basically saying any well known/mainstream place is not a restaurant and does not have a chef.

        • That's a weird logic. Can an orchestra be an orchestra even if they don't have a conductor? Of course they can just as you can have a restaurant without a qualified chef. My missus cooks cracking meals. but even she will confirm that that doesn't make her a Chef.

      • For the record, the pizza bases are made from scratch. Flour, water, oil….etc……rolling machines. And I'm pretty sure almost every pizza maker, (Dominos or not) uses 'already prepared' ingredients……would be a long wait for a pizza if you had to wait for the salami to cure…..

      • You are totally correct! This is how apprentice chefs serve out there 4-5yr apprenticeship . They work their arses off to prove to their head chefs and Themselves that they can do this job to receive their qualification. The 6 Head Chefs are forceful but teach there many apprentice's to go to the fish markets to learn how to pick a correct fresh fish @ 4am they learn to fillet etc. They also take them to farms etc to learn where this food they're cooking is coming from also how to cook it. So go you great little apprentice's…

  • just because you cook the food doesn't mean that your're the chef. I work at HJ so does that mean that i'm a chef?

    • Put a tiny burger on a giant plate with just a thin drizzle of jus around the outside & you're well on your way! ;)

  • I wouldn't worry about it. Nobody goes to dominos for quality

  • I honestly don't know what the kefuffle is about. So Dominos appropriated a term associated with fine dining. Well nobody in their right mind associates Dominos with fine dining. Marketdroids are stealing posh sounding words all the time. Deal with it, or you'll be a nervous wreck checking all the advertising copy out there.

  • Since ozb has resorted to such petty issues, I would also like liveconnected to remove the reviews it lists on its site as it's completely misleading since most of them are based on their previous plans.

    • So you're saying this isn't an appropriate topic for general discussion?
