Dam not bad very good prices

  • What REALLY annoys me is that their 4G plan call rates are per min, while their 3G ones are per 30 seconds (half min). That's gouging in extreme in my mind.

Who is LC, as it might be worth comparing?

I am currently on sim only with TPG (Optus reseller as well) and they don't have 4G plans right now.

    • LC = LiveConnected

      • Given I am on TPG's $13/mth sim only plan for 3G, LC is way more expensive.

I just cannot get over the per minute charging for phone calls as they don't even use 4G.

I wonder if TPG will get 4G sim only plans soon.

        • pax What plan are you on ? the $17.99 plan

        • +1

LC used to be much cheaper, but have recently up'd their prices unfortunately.

    • +1

Live Connected. Used to be cheap but upped their prices to minimum $28.

You do need a 4G phone to take advantage of these plans too

      edit: me three!!

      • How do they differentiate 3G to 4G. If i have a 3G plan, and a 4G phone ? Do they look up the imei ? and then block the 4G ?

        • my understanding is that its somewhat based on the sim card but mainly on your plan; the operator applies a 'bolt-on' to your plan to enable 4G, otherwise you just wont pick it up.

    • LC = LiveConnected

      See there deal here: http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/96527

What annoys me is that they're providing faster downloads (4G) but smaller download limits ?!?!?

  • Optus NetWork?

These are on the Optus 4G Network. Remember to check https://www.optus.com.au/4gcoverage for full details of where coverage exists.

Also remember that 4G doesn't affect call quality or reception - it only relates to data.

    Other than that, great prices!

  • +1

so does that mean there coverage wud be same as optus?

    • +1

      affirmative.

    • +5

What you signed up for 6 months ago was a 3G plan.

Vaya were simply advertising that they would soon have 4G plans for consumers. When they did, you would have to sign up for a new 4G plan. You can't simply use your existing 3G Plan on a 4G Network, your existing SIM card would not be 4G-enabled.

      This is not false advertising.

  • +4

Sadly, it looks like data is charged per MB; at least when comparing the 4G plan pdf to the 3G plan pdf.

    • +1

Excess data is billed at 4c per MB in increments of 1MB

I would assume this is the case for non-excess data too.

  • +5

LC and Vaya - neither have international included in the cap; and both charge for international SMS. I want 4G, but sticking with TPG. C'mon TPG, reveal something!

    • ditto!

      • agreed. That's TPG's drawcard.

    • LC used to, my plan has $90 for international. Haven't ever used it but it's there.

  • -5

vaya international is a joke. 90cents for 30seconds and thats the cheapest country. i seen $3.50 for 30 second call to zimbabwe

    • +2

i dont think your cap is include for international call, because that would be bad for their unlimited plan.
They charge you extra for international call + 35c for flag fall which is ridiculous.

    • +4

dude. skype for international… use the data on this plan to make skype calls

      • +1

If you like talking with a 1-2 second delay.
Not everyone oversea have access to data plan and not all place have good coverage. Not to mention the extra cost and even the access to a smart device that will run Skype.

        • VOIP. Calls are generally cheaper via voip than they will be via mobile. You can use your data and call a landline.

        • I use Skype with Skype credits to make international calls. Very reasonably priced and never had any problem with quality of calls.

        • why would you need to access to skype overseas? I call landlines/ mobiles from my skype account from my mobile or laptop…

        • "Not everyone oversea have access to data plan"
They don't need it for skype calls - you can call their phone.

"even the access to a smart device that will run Skype."
If you don't have a smart device to run skype, why would you want a 4G plan? Choose a 3G plan with better International rates?!?

(Or are you talking about people at the other end having data/Skype ?)

        • I am talking about the other end having skype. If i use skype to call directly to mobile that would cost more money and what is the point of that

        • Foocall. I use this to call home and it dials a local number here. Cheap. works very well. Better than skype. Android app not sure if on iOS.

    • Canada is 40 cents,just FYI
and there are heaps of other countries cheaper then 90 cents

  • +2

LOL..I was 1/2 tempted until I saw the coverage zone. OK for the inner city dwellers, no good for anybody out in the burbs!!

  • for $34 plan, you get 850 credit, can you use those for international call? or you gotta pay extra?

    • +1

i think you definitely have to pay extra cause if not then you can make unlimited international call with the $45 plan

  • +1

Been with Vaya for 1 and half months. Not bad, dont really notice the reception difference coming from Optus. Had a really bad experience trying to get my data going again after my phone updated its firmware and wiped the settings that were in there. Nearly 30 minutes later my data is now working. The customer service was shocking, after asking me to confirm my name/dob/address she asked me for my sim number, yeah just let me pull my phone apart to get that for you. Continuously just didnt say anything and put me on hold for ridiculous amounts of time. Practically getting into an arguement after i was requested to put in a 4 digit pin which she told me 475 was the right number 5 times and telling me 475 was a 4 digit number. The list goes on.

Now they arnt bad to be with, just hope you never have to call customer service or at least get a better rep than i did.

  • I'll hold off until 4G takes off (which is why I haven't bothered to get a 4G phone, it'd be a rarity for me to use it so why pay).

    • You got it wrong mate, before all these resellers have their hands on 4G, it's the perfect time to get it - the speed different is vast. To me, in most area (Sydney), the mobile data from Optus 3G is not better than vodafail, slow and unstable. But with LTE, even with 2 bar of reception, it's really fast (yes, faster than Telstra), I got stable 10Mb in city, and peak of 46Mb in Macquarie Park. I can safely imagine, with the limited invest from Optus on LTE, it'll no match with Telstra, after every reseller has a piece

Btw, comparing to the previous Vigin big plan promo, vaya doesn't look too good

      • except 4G still hasn't taken off (and by taken off I mean been installed in much more than central areas of capital cities). Canberra (where I live) doesn't have 4G AT ALL unless you're with Telstra. So the only time I would be able to use 4G is when I visit Sydney every couple of month and even then it would mainly be on the off chance I visit the CBD.

Seeing how limited Optus' rollout for 4G is based on the maps, it's next to useless for anyone who doesn't live or work in those areas. Why spend $1K on a new phone for a capability I can't use?

        • You would spend the $1k because they're constantly rolling out towers to improve network coverage, week by week.

4G is the network technology of the future, nothing wrong with getting a phone that's compatible with it. It's just getting ready for the future.

        • No average 4G phone costs $1K unless you are talking about iPhone5 64GB. Haven't you seen the Galaxy S3 4G price in Ozbargain today? It's less than $500 while having a better feature set and specs than the iPhone 5. (or wait for Galaxy S4 that's announcing tomorrow which will still be cheaper than the iPhone 5)

Also, obviously none of the 4G service cater for everyone yet. If you can't get 4G in your area, there is no benefit for these plans so there is no need to even consider these plans in the first place.

        • @Jakiman which was my point in the first place. I'm holding off until it takes off.

@Eivad - that's exactly what I'm talking about. I like my iphones and yes I recognise they cost more than a Galaxy. I don't see the point in buying a tech I can't use. By the time they it comes out there'll likely be a newer phone so I might as well wait until it's more useable than a city block in a city I don't live in before I spent that sort of money on a phone.

        • oops the iphone point was to Jackiman too.. got my peeps confused..

  • +1

can i use my iphone 4 with this?

    • +2

I guess so… but you won't be able to utilize 4G support?

    • +2

you can, but you won't get a 4G/LTE connection.

  • Their 3G plans were much better for most users. Vaya are no longer a bargain. Pretty much gone down the same path as Live Connected.

    • +2

Then sign up before the 31st March & get their 3G connection & prices. http://www.vaya.net.au/?option=Mobile&simonly says:

Any 3G Flexi plan or 3G Unlimited plan ordered must be connected on or prior to 31st March 2013 for that 3G plan to be valid

      • would you get the sim in time, and not have any issues porting is the question?

        • +3

I actually signed up to the 3G plan 2 days ago and I got the sim card via registered mail yesterday.
I activated it yesterday (porting my number from Crazy John postpaid) and it's already active by this morning.
Very happy with how fast they do the delivery and porting. No issues so far.

        • I signed up with them last Friday, got the SIM Tuesday & was ported from Dodo to them Wednesday. Very happy with speed of things.

        • Agreed, same for me, signed up last Monday, got the SIM next day, activated and number ported within a few hours.

edit: that was a reply to ptsordos

      • +1

Am I reading this correctly- after March 31st only their 4G plans will be available??

        • +1

That's the way I read it (Unless you're an existing customer on a 3G), which I think is pretty poor.
Still, at least they give til the 31st to change.

    • +4

Well…compared to other 4G plans, this is still the cheapest so far.

      • +1

yea that's what I thought, why the negs people ?

      • +2

How dare Vaya charge more for a newer faster service!!!!

That being said I think it's a bit silly for them to kill off the 3G plans. Not everyone has a 4G capable phone or lives/works in an Optus 4G capable area where they'd get any benefit from it.

Maybe Optus wont allow them too, who knows but you'd think they'd keep something like the $17 plan around for those of us who are happy to just sit on 3G for a while longer.

        • It's probably a marketing move on their part.

Makes everyone switch to 4G plans, which, even if you're not in a 4G coverage area, would switch to the Optus 3G dual band network. This is still faster than the normal Optus 3G network (which is what Vaya used before).

        • +2

It seems Vaya do have some weird things set on them (?by Optus), like not being able to upgrade your plan, a cancellation fee if you close your account - mb some middle man is trying to test what strange terms consumers will put up with in return for cheap prices.

        • Eivad - where did you find out this information? Can't find anywhere that Vaya only uses the normal Optus 3G, nor that 4G will default to 3G dual band.

        • +1

I think the whole cancellation fee is just Vaya not an Optus thing. For the life of me I couldn't imagine why it would cost them $30 to close an account but perhaps Optus charges a fee for it? Who knows.

        • what "killing 3G plans" you talking about?
          they are still available

        • +1

          @anabol

          For a short time:

any service not connected by the 31st March will be activated on an equivalent 4G Power Plan if activation request is submitted from 1st April 2013 onwards.

    • +1

Although I agree that the old plans were better value, I don't think this neg is warranted.
You're negging their business practices as opposed to negging on the actual deal itself.

Objectively speaking, this should be compared to other 4G plans and as other people have stated, it is better value than other 4G plans currently available on the market.

  • Why would you neg this? If you have a phone already, this is great value!!

  • -5

Remember guys very very very bad service from Vaya. Don't expect too much if you want to go cheap! I had to launch 2 TIO complaints to this guys!!

    • connection is pretty good, what other services you talking about?

    • +1

Its people like you that brought the prices up. LC price rise was probably also because of this. If you're gonna cheap out, you should only expect sufficient service, and not treated like VIP. If you want that go with iinet and pay through the roof

      • +2

Sometimes it's warranted though. You can't just blame people for 'raising prices'. The Mrs had a problem where they sent her a bill for $12. She paid it. Somewhere she was issued an additional $3 bill. She didn't pay it because she never received it and she's not telepathic. She then got hit with a $10 late fee. She called up the support and explained what happened. They refused to remove the late fee. She was basically forced to whinge on their FB and threaten to go to the TIO for it to be removed. It would have been the last thing we wanted to do, but it shouldn't be paying for Vaya's stuff up as a matter of principle.

I don't expect a VIP level of service but I expect a competent one.

        • Well..I didn't say its not cheap. I'm just saying if u want to go cheap you need to know there are no service. Is not just about billing issues. It just a unprofessional company with a few employees offering low price connections.

Just need to be aware that if you disconnects from vaya you will need to pay for disconnection as well as the sim pack which may end up costing more if you just go to Optus or Virgin. The choice is up to you if you want to make the call.

        • Their staff need to be empowered to be able to make decisions when common sense prevails. I recently had a stupid situation where I got a bill for $1. I must have paid a bill twice accidentally or something and the $1 was the surcharge.

Now I didn't really want to pay the $1 by the due date because it would have incurred another surcharge of $1 which just seemed ridiculous. I asked if they could waive the $10 late fee for the month so that I wouldn't have to pay the $1 but they refused to do so.

I just paid the $1 but the entire thing was just stupid and annoying and common sense would have been to waive a fee that was legally dubious in the first place (if you're unsure about penalty fees in contracts google the words 'liquidated damages' or just have a look at the recent lawsuits against the banks for exactly this thing).

        • Telstra are also the most expensive but are well known for their constant billing screw-ups.

    • +1

not a reason to neg the deal.

  • you are connected to optus not vaya , he is talking about customer service.

    • Is more about the account issues etc.

  • +1

Of the novelty data appearing overnight, Vaya size M would seem the market leader for the moment, 15 dollar per gb against LC's $20 gb.

    $22 - 650 talk, unlimited text - 1.5gb data
    $30 (M) - $700 Credit, 1.5GB

Even noted, considering the X 2 extra adopters pay for this doubled throughput, presumably in lieu of five gb's * prepaid, demonstrates a benefit self cancelling; 6mbit leaving few real apps in the cold, my http://speedtest.net/result/2572626199.png (telstra 3gb Ipad fr acer liquid mt 2011 phonecard).

  • 1) whats optus 4G like? How dies it compare to Telstra? Is 4g coverage good indoors on optus?

    2) Do Vaya have nano sims?

    3) Can do change your rate plan month to month. eg. this month 22$ plan, next month 16$ plan.

    • All from personal experience.

      1) Optus 4G in Brisbane is amazing, coverage inside shopping centers, even in a 2/3 underground car parks i go to regularly. Compared to telstra it's FAST, for now.

      2) No clue, sorry.

      3) last I heard you can go down, but not up. Strange, i thought they'd want more money…

      • thanks, I just saw on their site they do have nano sims.

Does anyone know if the 'first month free' applys to these power plans?

        • It shouldn't and I'm almost 100% sure on this because that offer is supposed to end 31st March (and the plan has to be not only ordered but also activated before 31st March - 4G won't be active until Apr 1st)

  • -1

I'm just hoping virgin mobile bring back an offer similar to last year's bonus 2gb on all BYO plans!

  • +1

The best thing about these plans isn't mentioned in the OP: You can now buy an extra 1GB of data for $7. You can buy as many of these as you want, and you can buy them at any time during the month.

So I will probably consider the $22 plan with a $7 data pack, this increases the data to 2.5GB. Much better value for me than the $34 plan with only 2GB data because I don't need that many calls, and some months I might only need 1.5GB so I'll pay much less.

I see the data packs as especially useful if you are mid-way through your month and have used more data than usual, just grab an extra 1GB for $7 and you are good to go.

It's not something I would need every month so it's this new flexibility that makes these plans great IMO, especially since they are already the cheapest 4G plans in Australia.

Still on LC $10.99 for now, but when I go 4G I'm porting to Vaya.

  • Does anyone know if the 'first month free' applys to these power plans or just the flexi?

    • As I posted above - I'm almost 100% sure it won't apply to the power plans because that offer only applies to SIMs ordered AND activated before 31st March (and it won't be possible to activate the Power plans until after April 1st)

  • +1

The data is calculated in 1 MB increments…does that mean if I send 1 whatsapp message which is around 4kb, it is counted as 1 mb??

    • +1

excellent question! I too would like to know the answer to this

    • Based on connection session… your phone may hold a data connection open for lets say 12 hours and you used 63.43MB this will be rounded up to 64MB.

However if you phone opens and then shuts a data connection then your stuffed… :P

I haven't seen a phone do that since the days of the first WAP phones but they did time based WAP which was over the CSD standard, so you wanted your phone to terminate the connection. Packet switched the phone normally holds the connection open as you are only charged for the data sent to and from your phone.

      • What if the 4G reception drops out? E.g. You go through a tunnel? Does the 4kB still get charged as 1MB?

  • +1

It states disconnection/account closing fee is $30. Does this apply per SIM/Mbl no. or all the numbers linked within 1 account as a whole?

    http://www.vaya.net.au/?option=Additional%20Fees%20and%20Cha…

  • What? I have to pay $30 if I want to terminate a Vaya plan?

    • +1

You can just port your number elsewhere. I think you only pay $30 if you are disconnecting that number.

  • Noob question here, is 4g supported on the One X? (quad core version)

Says in Gsmarena that the 4g supports the 1900MHz baseband, but the optus 4g network runs on the 1800MHz baseband.

  • I've been with Vaya $11 3G plan for a few months now. Love receiving the $11 bills.

I am tempted to move to 4G, but does that mean I have to get another $20 extra charge for another SIM card? Or can the current SIM card be activated as a 4G one?

    • I remember seeing somewhere that you don't need to change SIM card. You just need to pay…. $33 (to change). Only. Haha.
