What is a good present to buy a 5 year old Boy?

I'll be visiting my little cousin this weekend and need to buy a present this week. I've had a look online but can't really find anything that i think he would like. Previously i purchased a Nerf gun but the mum didn't like it haha.

I saw this which i thought was pretty cool but couldn't find anyone in Australia selling it http://www.toysrus.com/product/index.jsp?productId=12926593

Any recommendations would be appreciated.
Thank you.

I always get my nephew, who is now 7, art supplies. Kmart have a good art range at reasonable prices. Play dough is always a winner.

    • haha my wife hates it when we get given play dough for the kids… it goes everywhere and makes a mess

Books are a good option that don't clutter the house up with random toys.

I love the shark idea. Personally I love the remote control helicopters, but we know they will be crash landed in a neighbours garden … unless of course he lives on a decent acreage. A scooter is a good investment too, even for those that are bike-challenged, as they are far easier to handle … if he doesn't have one already. Other than that ask his mum what theme Lego he likes, any special kit he desires. If he is a Lego fan he will never forget that you bought it for him. If he has sporting interests, what about something useful there; new basketball, hoop/stand, footy, cricket set, etc.

    LEGO

My boys would punch me if I didn't say Lego.

Hot Wheels. There are ones with wall tracks (stick to the wall and go via gravity) or the standard spring loaded launcher types.

  • Definitely LEGO!!!
Second ur opinion mskeggs. My boys will throw a riot if i dont say Lego!!!

    Lego!

    • Lego didn't even cross my mind, what a great idea! What's trending at the moment? I can't ask his mum because she will tell me not to buy anything, plus i want it to be a surprise ^.^

      • Lego starwars

      • I recommend Lego creator or Lego City. There are these small creator 3 builds in 1 sets that are fun to build. The city ones are pretty popular with kids too.

      • Lego Star Wars or Monster Fighters. If the mum was upset about nerf guns, though, you may like to edge towards the Lego City line which has no guns but is still pretty cool.

  • Nintendo DS with game cart. 1000's of hours of fun. You can load it up with educational/problem solving games.

Read the title again. 5 year old, not 15 year old.
      And we're talking toys here…

Actually ask most young parents in today's society and they'd tell you their toddlers are experts with the iPad. Whether or not you should is a different story but my 2 year old knows how to use one and there's heaps of great learning apps for them.

        • Not dismissing the utility of a tablet for learning, but it doesn't have to be a $369 tablet :)

        • +2

I don't even have a Tablet, he sure as hell isn't getting one haha.

I wouldn't expect such expensive gifts from an Ozbargain user lol/

  • power rangers/transformers/action hero figurines. those 20cm tall ones.

My kids love playing monopoly it might seem old fashioned but its a classic for a reason. There are lots varieties, my kids have Star Wars , and a good alternative to electronics.

  • maths and science textbooks if they geek

  • I remember the usefull things I got that weren't "kid stuff'.
A cool Torch, A Camera, Fishing Gear, Camping Gear, Watch, Radio, any sort of sports gear or electronics.
Something signed from their favourite team should win points.

Uno - 10 min's to learn; lifetime to master. Anyone will play a game of Uno with him. Requires no batteries (makes no annoying noises unless he loses). Very portable.

Dont think of it as a game, think of it as an investment.

  • Tool set, something like: http://www.toysrus.com.au/home-depot-18-piece-tool-box/w1/i2…

Most boys love to 'help out' around the house IME. :)

  • Ring Toss (Quoits) was a popular present for my 7yo nephew recently — http://shop.australiangeographic.com.au/-Outdoor-Ring-Toss-P…

Six year old nephew liked the Invisible pen for part of his Christmas present — http://shop.australiangeographic.com.au/Invisible-Writer-Pen…

Australian Geographic has some suggestions for particular age groups; otherwise I would agree with previous commenters — art supplies and/or lego.

I often like to buy things that they have to make/build before they can use :-)

  • I have a 5 yo. I agree with the Lego and to keep the parents happy you could get storage boxes/head thingys to keep it in (Peters of Kensington have a good range at discounted prices). I also agree with the scooter (Big W have a few good cheap ones) or depending on budget the micro scooters are very cool! My 5 yo has had alot of use out of a portable dvd player as well. Kmart have a great range of boys toys in the $15-$20 gift range like mini skateboard ramps with finger skateboards, remote control cars etc. Kids are still pretty happy with any gift at this age! Good luck!

  • If you got time make this, it cost under $10 http://www.instructables.com/id/ULTRA-VIOLET-NIGHTLIGHT/

    +1 for Australian Geographic…

    OR

Be true to your OzBargain cheapskatedness and blow a whole ten bucks on this:
    http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/96151
The compact version is $10 delivered.

Honestly, he's sure to love pet/bird/moon gazing!

    • Perfect idea, appreciate it :)

  • Pre order him a PS4 or buy him a $1m mansion if you don't have a budget.

    • Yes my budget is endless. I am going to buy him a Ferrari, a beach home, Pre-order him a lifetime supply of hookers 13 years in advance, and the rest i will just give him gold bullion and he can make his own decisions and buy whatever he wants.

  • What about dinosaur replicas, like the ones sold by Safari and Scleich (my spelling may be off)? I had they impression they were popular with male tots. Toyworld sells some but it might be cheaper to purchase multiple items online.

IPAD 4, the generation of kids now plays require these to boost there learning, there are large supply of free, paid apps supporting young ones at age of 5+

  • +1 LEGO!!!

  • Lego is good.
What about sports stuff. Cricket set, tennis racquet or something. Soccer shin pads and ball.
He may already have some of this stuff though.

  • Angry birds merchandise, my nephew goes crazy for them!

  • Nerf guns. My kid has loads of fun shooting me in the arse with it, shooting the cat. He is pretty accurate at plinking paper cups off the kitchen table.

I was flying an RC helicopter and he hit it with a nerf gun across the room, sending it crashing down.

Then there's Nerf catch, where you try and catch the discs as they are being shot, otherwise they hit you in the head.

Anything you don't like on the telly, just shoot the Nerf gun at it, makes you feel better.

Plus lots of other games you can play. Dart tag, Humans v Zombies.

Previously i purchased a Nerf gun but the mum didn't like it

      Try reading the question.

  • Thanks for all the replies! I'm going to go with the Lego option and something from National geographic :)

  • I bought these dinosaur eggs from National Geographic that are firmly compressed powdery plaster? And they have a dinosaur skeleton inside. They came with a small wooden pick and small brush so you can carefully chisel away to reveal the bones.

My 5 and 3 year old girls sat for ages working at this, they loved it! The next week I saw the teachers at school had bought one, and all the kids were taking turns at digging away at the egg. From what I saw, the boys loved it too! Anyway, I'd recommend buying for a 5 year old boy. There was 2 in the box, so you won't be left out ;-)

  • Cigarettes, Beer and some porn movies..

Only joking!!! Skylanders are quite popular and Kmart have just got in a new Furby thats a lot smaller and a lot cheaper ($29)
