PSB Alpha B1 Bookshelf Speakers $290 a Pair with Free Shipping to Metro Areas

170

These are a serious contender for the world's best value speakers, Google them if you don't believe me. The sound is just about perfect and they're suitable for nearfield listening which means you can use them as computer speakers if you want to.

$290 is a great price for Australian stock with a 10 year warranty, one of the guys at the store said they had about 30 pairs in stock. If you're building a 2.0 system and you don't have an amp then I'd suggest pairing them with a high quality Tripath amp like the ones below.

I got these for $250 delivered from the same store about 3 weeks ago. They had a 5 day sale on at that time … I joined ozbargain to post the $250 price but the sale closed b4 my account was active!

Excellent value speakers. Well regarded - see Stereophile for example.

I'm running them in and after about 30 hours of playing they are starting to open up.

Digital Cinema delivered in 2 days. Only avail in black when I bought.

Good price and $250 would be a great one.
Do not expect to many pluses as most people do not realise that loudspeakers are the most critical component of an audio system.
I've got Audioengine 5 for $400 (thanks ozbargain). Never regretted buying them as local middle men would charge premium on high (or close to) quality gear.

Thanks for advise on amps as well.

loudspeakers are the most critical component of an audio system

second to the quality of the audio going in

The crap in, crap out argument has lost a lot of credence in recent years as the difference between consumer and pro-grade sources has closed dramatically.

I'd rather play an iPod through an expensive set of speakers than a $1000 DAC through some crud white van jobs.

          I second this.
Amps circuitry improved drramatically during 90s, and prices went down during 2000s.
I cannot say the same thing about loudspeakers.
Expect to pay at least 3 times as much for loudspeakers as for an amp (e.g. look at links posted by OPs).

        • Good stuff in, crap conversion, further crap conversion, even more crap conversion then finally crap out is sometimes the case when it comes to typical TV setups. I'll give you an example of one I saw recently.

          • Digital audio signal goes into basic Foxtel box.
          • Foxtel Box converts the digital signal to analog using crappy inbuilt DAC and outputs it via RCA
          • LG TV converts analog signal to digital and then outputs it via optical which besides HDMI is the TV's only option for audio output.
          • Crappy Jaycar Electronics DAC converts the signal back to analog and sends it to the amp.
  • Hi there audio gurus,

If I bought these speakers and plugged them into this:

would this be a good move, or a bad move?

    cheers

  • Does anyone know how these compare to the Usher-s520? Was going to get them and this just popped up…damn audio bug lol

    • On this note, does anyone know how they compare to KRK RP8 G2?

I'm by no means all that educated in these areas, so any help would be great!

  • Is A$290 a deal? According to Audioholics in 2006 the "Manufacturer's Suggested Retail Price" is US$279 a pair (expand the Specs to see price breakdown).

  • was looking at cambridge s30's but might get these instead
