      click the link?

      • For those on mobile, it's more convinient in main post.

        • +1

It says what it is, it's not that hard to understand.
There is the 840 Series and the 840 Pro Series, and as the OP has stated it is the 840 Series.

    • +1

      No.

  • +1

    Nice.

  • +1

damn I paid $220 for mine, nice deal.

  • the 500gig is probably even a better deal

    • They dont ship the 500GB here

      • keep an eye on it, prices and shipping to destinations constantly change with amazon

Waiting on the 500GB to be shipped to oz :)

        • Why wait when you can get it from here for <$310 shipped (less if you split shipping with someone)

        • +1

          coz i got amazon credit

        • Because not everybody needs at 500gb SSD. Plus, even though a good price, ~$150 in price difference is still a lot for moderate-everyday users like me.

So this is a perfect deal for me! Good job for OP.

        • Then Maybe Upvote It

        • +2

you can never get enough storage , 250GB fills up really quickly and before you know it, your buying the 512GB one and putting the 250GB in the draw to gather dust

  • How do I know or find out if I can put this in my Dell XPS15 laptop (L502X)?

    • if your laptop using SATA, it will fit! if you are speed addict, that is different issue again :)

    • Here's a guide to replacing it (for your exact model) ftp://ftp.dell.com/Manuals/all-products/esuprt_laptop/esuprt…

The hard drive guide is a bit less than halfway through the document. Given this SSD is the thinnest type of 2.5" drive made at 7mm thick, it will certainly fit in there :)

      • Is there some kind of padding that comes with it so that it fits securely?

        • Most laptop hard drives have a small bracket attached, which assuming you are replacing a 7mm hard drive will be compatible with the ssd, all you do is unscrew the bracket and transfer it to the ssd.
If not you could use some foam/rubber adhesive bumper thingys.

    $165.66 for me.

    • +1

      Same here $165.66 shipped

  • +1

shipping is only $6.87 to melbourne

  • +1

Yeah I ordered this a few days ago and they've shipped with iParcel.
Funny how it's less expensive than Amazon UK.

  • +2

My HDD just died, can this thing be mounted in my desktop and use the same power supply and sata cable from my old drive. My old drive is a seagate barracuda 7200.12 its 12v and uses 0.52a power.

    • +3

      Yes it can.

    • Wtf who would give this comment a negative vote, such a legitimate question!

      • +6

        some ozb's are weird…..

      • +3

There's always one who negs legitimate questions. It's probably someone who asked some stupid question in the past which got negged so now they're out to neg everyone else who asks questions.

        • +5

Looks like he negged us too

        • +1

Its user Yahoo, the user wants us to use their search engine to find answers to questions otherwise they will go out of business.

  • Nice find - thanks Op :)

  • +2

    I really want one but I know I don't NEED it…
someone convince me to not get one please

  • Will this work with a PS3?

    • -1

yes it will but the speed will be the same as a normal hdd because ps3 cant handle those types of speed

  • The 500gb for $280 is good too, but won't post here.
    Might hold out for that.

  • How would warranty work?

    • i would also like to know how the warranty works.

  • +2

For those that can claim back 10% GST it is not worth the risk. MSY & PCDIY have it for $189. If you claim 10% back, it will costs $172. For $13 more you don't have to wait and also less headache with warranty issue.

As with the 840 Pro 256G, I definitely buy from local as the price is very close.

    • +1

You would have to buy something else to make up $300. That's spending more money to save some. Not worth it in my opinion, especially since Amazon has been praised for excellent service for faulty items!

      • +1

Not really. I can claim back 10% GST for work and company realted items.

TRS is another option but that reuires minimum $300 spend.

    • …Regarding the "less headache with warranty issues" I beg to differ. I just had an OCZ SSD fail on me. I thought no problems, return back to IJK where I bought it. They charged me $10 shipping and 2-3 week wait at minimum.

So much for local seller support hey. Will never bother with these muppets again :(

      • As with Amazon warranty issue with my headphone, they simply asked me to contact the manufacturer representative in Australia. When I did, I was told my headphone was not covered because I have purchased it overseas.

  • whats the freight cost to Aus?

    • $6.74 US for slow shipping to Perth

  • What the difference between this and the SanDisk Extreme SSD 256GB ??

    • +3

The SanDisk is only 240GB, and has faster sequential write speeds. It is also suggested that it might last 0.5 million hours longer. For home use I doubt you would notice the speed difference. Realy not much in it. Both have a 3 year warranty.

      • have the issues for 840(non-pro version) fixed?

        • +1

If you're talking about the shortened lifespan of tlc ssds in general then no, they're still there and probably there to stay.
However, the 250gb has about double the life of the 120 and the 500gb is 4x the 120.

Still, people recommend using mlc if you transfer a lot of data on a regular basis like video editing. The Sandisk extreme 240gb is quite good and only ~$20 more.

        • +1

There haven't been any 'issues' on the retail 840s (at least widely reported). There was a bug on the pre-release firmware they send out to reviewers that caused the drive to brick itself in certain situations, but that was fixed before release.

The 840 non pro uses TLC NAND which some people have blown out of proportion as being and issue when it's completely NOT an issue.
Yes the NAND has lower lifespan but this is a consumer level drive - it's not designed to be used for servers/databases. It's meant for normal desktop use where NAND longevity will never be an issue during the lifetime of the drive.

Ever since SSD's were introduced certain brands/models have been unreliable not due to NAND failure but due to crappy firmware and crappy controllers.

  • Awesome price!

  • +2

This is a great price… I'm still lamenting the loss off the 830 series….. Personsally I won't buy a 840 unless it is the 840 pro. Thankfully I don't have any builds planned at the moment

  • +1

    My total comes to 167.

Does anyone know somewhere that has a good price for the 840 pro or similar?

    • +1

      +1 For the 840 Pro.

    • MSY or PCDIY for start.

      • Cool, looks like MSY is the cheapest by a few bucks, $254 for the 256GB.

  • AUD 175.31 total…

    • Mine was 165.66AUD total.

  • Buy a drive from O/S? Not that much of a gambler. I've returned 3 locally, I would be down huge $ if bought O/S. Good luck to those who do gamble.

    • +1

I mostly agree but Samsung make the most reliable SSDs on the market and Amazon is one of the best online retailers for customer service so it makes it less risky.

  • Is it just me, or does anyone else only get "We're sorry. This item can't be shipped to your selected destination. You may either change the shipping address or delete the item from your order. "

I get it for 2 different addresses (work / home) in Canberra … :(

    • Just had a look and it looks like the deal has expired.

  • Got mine today! Very fast postage :D

  • Back again $169.99 + shipping.
