I'd be weary of any hosting company offering 'unlimited' :/

Unlimited in shared hosting is a marketing term which simply means there isn't a limit to how much you can have. That's simply because space in a shared environment is spread across their collection of hard drives and the price for these are so cheap that if their client base grows, they just add indefinitely. Meaning you can host as much as you want. Same with bandwidth.

It's a marketing term because ultimately what you get is slow read/write speeds and slowed bandwidth. It's unlimited in space and usage, vastly limited in speed.

All shared hosting is the same. That's why it's so cheap.

Pretty much. It's a case of 'you-get-what-you-pay-for'. If you only pay a couple dollars a month, you're not going to get anything special.

Personally I use a shared host for all of my websites, and friends, but they are small sites with minimal traffic. If anything ever needed more, I'd just upgrade it to a VPS or dedicated.

  • I prefer to go local for hosting, especially when recommending to corporate clients. The customer service is usually worth the extra $$$ given the amount of importance placed on servers for the running of a business.

  • Single domain Does that mean I can only host one domain? Seems a bit of a waste with "unlimited" space.

    Shared SSL Certificate huh?

Do they let you store files on there (e.g. say you wanted to have an offsite backup of your hard disk), or is it strictly website related files only?

    • If it is limited, just create a site that lets you upload files (aka megaupload), then we can all use it.. it's unlimited right?
