BBC Trials of Life Blu Ray $21 del or BBC Life On Earth Blu Ray $20.50 del @ Amazon UK

There seems to be a lot of love for BBC Blu Ray documentaries here on OzBargain - and rightfully so! :)
Just spotted that these two more recent releases have dropped down to approximately half their previous price. Both retail for $57.99 each at JB, so these $20 price points (with delivery included) look like bargains to me.

Anyone seen these on Bluray? I have the DVD of Trials of life, this stuff was filmed in the late eighties and early nineties for CRT TVs with 480p. It did not have amazing quality (though of course, like all Attenborough docs, is excellent and interesting) even on DVD, I struggle to imagine that a Blu-Ray transfer could materially improve much.

There is a review of the PQ:

The Trials of Life is my all time favourite David Attenborough series which is why I have given it 5 stars. But what you really want to know is what's the picture quality like. In places it's very grainy, almost like watching a worn out VHS tape, however, if you sit at a good distance from the screen then you can't see the grain and the PQ is actually very good and quite sharp. The colours are quite vivid in places too. It's a big improvement compared to the DVD version. The problem is though the colours on disc 4 still look a bit washed out and was nowhere near as good as discs 1 to 3. Not sure why. I was actually a bit disappointed but still gets 5 stars for just being The Trials of Life. And let's not forget that superb theme tune. One of the best theme tunes I have ever heard. Sometimes just put it on just to listen to it. This set contains all 12 uncut episodes plus a making of documentary. Highly recommended to any Attenborough or wildlife fan.

      • Thanks for that, interesting, sounds like the did a fresh transfer maybe?

        • It says it was "re-mastered to HD quality" - so whatever that means LOL. I'd assume they made it as good as they could.

        • I guess if it was shot with film they should be able to remaster it well-ish :/

  • Good find, but I'm holding out for The Life Collection in Blu ray. Haven't lost hope yet.

  • Been waiting for the Blurays for these for ages.

  • Life on Earth is not widescreen btw, even though HD resolutions are wide screen. You're going to get black bars along the sides.
