Definetely a bargain… I saw the deal on TV last night……going to get one on weekend…..
Domayne are also selling Sony retractable 4GB USB drives for $14.95 standard list price.
Not a bargain. I picked one of these up from OW on Monday for $18.95 so you may think this is a bargain…..This thing has about THE slowest write speed of any USB stick…EVER. I have old USB keys lying around that write twice as fast as this thing. Spend a little more and get something decent.
SanDisk Cruzer Micro ARE decent. What were you copying? 10,000 photos?
one 700mb file…which took ages, so I ran Flash Memory Toolkit on it…..consistent write speed of between 2-3mb/s, which is really slow.
yeah i'm fed up with slow write speeds. Next time I get usb memory i'll make sure to read some reviews and spend a little more $$. At least I won't be annoyed everytime I have to use it.
@[Deactivated]: Cruzer Titanium or Corsair Flash Voyager GT are the 2 consistently fast read/write drives..
I'm a Cruzer Titanium person.. they're hardy drives that also look good.
Tried a Flash Voyager and the USB plug broke off after 8 months, my original Cruzer is still going strong (albeit a bit small in capacity nowadays at only 512Mb) 4 years later.
Bradt: Apologies, I meant SanDisk 4GB Cruzer Micro not SanDisk 4GB Cruzer Micro Skin. I have the non-skins (black plastic) and they are great.
@ozgamer: No worries mate! I should have done my research first! It really annoys me now everytime I go to use it, but I needed one quick. I'll go the Corsair GT next, and leave this one for a spare.
BOTH the Cruzer Micro and Cruzer Micro Skin are EXCRUCIATINGLY slow drives.
I owned a 1GB Cruzer Micro from late 2006 and it is significantly faster than the 4GB/8GB drives they have today! Very fast read speeds (25MB/s) but poor write speeds (4MB/s tops).
They are absolutely fine if you are just dropping Word documents, PDFs, a few JPEGs and MP3s - but I use them for larger files and I cannot bare using anything that slow.
I returned my 8GB Cruzer Micro (black) because of this very reason. Got the Sony Click Turbo from here - http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/8313 . The Sony is faster (8MB/s) but still not as fast as I would like!
so, overall this SanDisk 4GB Cruzer Micro Skin usb stick is slow and not a good buy?
is all usb stick USB 2.0 Compatible, y is this 1 slow?
The memory chips inside the drive have different speed ratings.
Cheap chips are slower than expensive chips.. It's one of those many cases where you get what you pay for.
thanks for the info.
how about Sony retractable 4GB USB drives that is mentioned, is it any good?
how can u tell the speed ratings or if the chip is cheap or not for different usb sticks? just by the price?
You have to search..
Many places do speed reviews on USB drives
If it's cheap, it'll have slower chips..
As I said if you want the fastest drive, Sandisk Cruzer Titanium and Corsair Flash Voyager GT are your safe bets, but you'll pay close to double (or possibly more than) for the same capacity.
Edit: 4Gb Cruzer Titaniums are going for $25-$83 on shopbot.com.au (most are in the $30-40 range)
Here are some specifications:

in stock most places?
Sold out this morning in Gardne City Perth…stock only last till mid day apparently!
Kardinya store had 4 left when I was there at 6PM
I remember paying $30 for a 256mb USB when they first came out.
Compares favourably to staticICE (don't know if there's any meaningful difference between Cruzer Micro and Cruzer Micro Skin) and should be more easily available through Kmart.
