  • Good deal

  • It would be a more worthwhile deal if the $40 voucher came with more than 1 GB of data - or less than 13 minutes of downloading at the rated 4G speeds.

It's even stranger given that $40 on the Telstra Pre-Paid Cap Encore can work out to include 2 GB for the same $40 (as well as a call and SMS allowance) if one makes the most of the data plus packs.

If you recharge this for $180 and get on the 1.46c/MB rate, then later you could use the $40 recharge onto an encore/simplicity prepaid phone and then do creditme2u of $39 to this device and that would give you:
      - up to 30 days extension of Encore expiry
      - $510 cap bonus on encore etc
      - 2.67 GB worth of data on this 4G device.

        my head is spinning now…

  • A friend of mine, against my strong protest, just got a Telstra prepaid MBB sim and its $30 for 700MB!!, and there are no month to month plans available… not sure if Telstra actually want customers or not here?

    • +1

There are other plans eg 365 day expiry for $180 gets 12GB. So 1GB a month for $15 a month on the best* network
      *YMMV
The $30 for 700MB is approx 3x as expensive (4.29c/MB)

      • Dodo ? $10 for 10Hours

50Gb &6months included for an item like this, you wouldn't get many people/4G ones e to feel very persuaded by only 1month of internet.

Don't get me started on this buzzword in general — vivid wireless has packaged something of an ∞ service * 8/3Mbps to the CBDs for several years; potentially not even that expensive considering one might achieve $1/gb as he/she chooses.

Prepaid 30 dollar starter packs have been going for around 10 bucks recently, they come with 3gb to use within 30 days.

Thats what i have been using, bought several dozen at 8 dollars each and just activate a new sim when i run out of data.

    • Would you care to tell us where?

      • -1

I got mine from Australia Post (10% discount on the 10 bucks hence 8 dollars) but ive seen Big W, BP Woolworths etc selling them for 10 dollars.

        • @ Copie…can you check your maths ;)

        • +2

20% not 10, math is not my strong point.

Have a look at this first and then decide. Telstra is planning on ruining your internet.

It's mainly about P2P and what's the relevence to this offer ? And the customer will be given choice to take part or not, can't see any issue

And you can opt out as well.

Besides encrypted data stream (https/vpn and so on) and they cannot detect what the data is.

      • +1

you can opt out of the trial. no idea if you can opt out once the trial is over and it is running across the whole network.

I think the prepaid non-iPad mobile broadband pricing sucks.

  • Unlockable?

    • yep done with my DSE bought deal ;)

  • Great device, picked one up on the dse deal. Very fast.

  • I hope people will still be missing the $174 4g Wifi device with $180 recharge voucher deal.

  • The DSE offer a month or two back also offered 365 days data included for the same price…

    • yep and unfort was an error whereupon DSE…kindly looked after the professionals wink

  • Telstra your service is a sham.

15GB a month for $95. Meanwhile, optus offers 10gb for $35/month, no contract.

I'm trying to get a good plan with a good amount of data on mobile internet, but its not possible seemingly.

    • Care to explain where you are getting this figure from?
The <a href="https://www.optus.com.au/shop/Broadband/Mobile-Broadband/Recharge/Prepaid-Recharge-Options"> link</a> doesn't have anything about your "offer"

    • Ive used Optus a few times before, and speed wise it doesnt come close to Telstra, especially in congested areas (ie Inner Sydney) also the internet reception and availablibilty of DC or 4G is very lacking.

  • Why the ACCC doesn't force Telstra to open their mobile network to all companioes to sell on I do not know. If you're in the country you have no option but to use Telstra.

    • Wrong, Optus have a mobile network too.

Even if Telstra were the only mobile network - by the ACCC announcing mobiles as a declared service - it may offer less incentive for Telstra to expand its networks, as there is the risk of the ACCC's declared prices making it unprofitable for Telstra to do so.

My gut feel is I think its good for mobiles to have competition at the infrastructure level - not too many players - but a few.

      • Wrong - in a lot of the country you have no option but to use Telstra as they have the best coverage, often the only coverage. Optuses coverage, for example where I am just a short distance from a small city, is lousy. Personally I think all the infrastructure should have been left in government hands and if they must have competition, make it for the services provided on that infrastructure. At the moment we have duplicated infrastructure (too much) in high market areas and none, or just one, in low market ones.

The only benefit from multiple networks is more jobs for the boys and advertisers.

        • It's complicated. When Telstra was govt owned, infrastructure was effectively paid by taxpayers so there's a strong case. The NBN was a great opportunity to assist and encourage better (and cheaper) mobile coverage. Well, maybe after September.

        • I misunderstood your post. I thought by "country" you meant all of Australia, not the bush. It's an interesting point you raise and there are pros and cons. I wonder where mobiles networks would be today if it was Government owned and built. Would we have had the same technological advances (3G,4G) that have stemmed from competition?

        • Only city people call the country 'the bush'. The bush is where all the trees and animals are. The country is where most of the trees have been cut down and all the animals are squashed on the side of the road - Jeez! :-)
