OzBargain Plus Android App - 99c (50% off for 1 Week!)

2224

Ask and thou shalt receive!

I've been using the OzBargain free app for some time now, the paid version has never gone on sale in that time and it got me thinking, who would appreciate an OzBargain app sale more than fellow OzBargainers?! Nobody that's who! So I wrote to the devs asking if they'd consider running a temporary sale, low and behold a reply this morning saying they would! For 7 days it's half price.

The devs themselves admit there is not a huge difference between the free and paid versions but it's still pretty handy when you're out and about and beats using a browser IMHO. I know there's been talk on the forums lately asking for a smart app with notifications and so forth, someone may design that eventually but until then there is really only this app or the BargainDesk app, I used to used the latter but got annoyed with it (your mileage may vary)

Note: I have no involvement with the devs of this app in any way

:( now I have no excuses left :(

    There goes another $

  • +109

In the spirit of OzBargs, why pay 99c when you can browse the bargs for free???

    • +39

No true OzBargainer pays to use OzBargain. Ozbargain is, and should be, free!

  • +49

Trust an OzBargainer to find a way to make money off OzBargainers…

  • +1

Worst 99c Investment I have probably ever made…over the next two years, the amount of things I will buy that I could have done without :-) Who knows.

Support the guys…the app will get better

  • +8

paying when you can browse for free so you can buy more things you don't need.. the irony is hurting my head!

    • +9

This is how Inception should have ended.

  • +11

Just use a free twitter client on your smartphone and follow @OzBargain & @OzBargainHot for bargains.

  • +9

I wouldn't buy it (we've seen so many good apps and games go from $5+ to free), whats the point of buying this app if its only 1/2 price, and doesn't do much more than the free version, or, just the website itself. Just use a free browser.

    • +2

      spoken like a true ozbarger!

  • +1

    What's better than 99c?
    0 cent app.
Now that would be a bargain, and in the spirit of ozbargain, this is not a bargain.

I would love a free ozbargain app but until then the web browser will do.

99c is too much to pay for something that can be done for free in your browser.

And surfing ozbargain on an ipad is not that bad..

    • Well technically there is a free OzBargain app already. Not that great, but it is free.

      • +1

Technically there is a free Need for Speed Most Wanted app already, but currently they are giving it away for free, see the Top Deals for the moment. Now thats a bargain.

  • +1

    is there an iphone version

  • +24

I don't mean to be rude, but you seem to have spent a lot of time reinventing the wheel here.

The free version sounds absolutely pointless because it gives you less functionality than an easy to browse webpage.

    • ಠ_ಠ

What's it called, something like False Economy from the perspective of the app developer.

Anyway, nevermind. I just posted to vote.

  • +4

I use free greader and subscribe to Ozbargain Frontpage and New Deals.
Free and it has worked better for me than ozbargain free app.

  • +10

Also, you seem to have bumped your own bargain up to the top of the deals and artificially increased your number of positives.

I guess we know how you plan to make money further down the track, which is the complete opposite of how this site works.

    Major neg because of this.

    • Take a look at most of the new deals and you'll see that they feature people +voting their own deals anyway.

    • +8

I'm not sure what you think is going on here, but the OP isn't the app developer, and the app developer isn't from Ozbargain.

      • +1

doesnt matter. it is not a deal, let alone a good one.

      • +4

If you have the free version you will see that this deal have 2.4k + vote. He is not talking about + voting on the site but the + voting display on the app. What is the point of an app that deceive you. I am sure they will try to put up spam/ghost deal on the app to make money of of it.
The app developer is obviously monitoring this and is having a laugh.(oh yes, i am sure the developer is a member of ozbargain)

      • "the app developer isn't from Ozbargain."
Well there's your problem. They don't understand the community.

  • +18

don't see why i should pay 99c when i can browse the internet for free.

  • +9

    not a bargain.

  • Turns out the OP + his own post, and the app turns out to be crap anyway. The paid app provides similar functionality as the website, while the free version has literally left out functionality of the website.

The app should be free always, 50% off this $2 app does not constitute a deal in my opinion.

EDIT: positive vote revoked. Cannot neg due to previous +.

    • +20

Turns out the OP + his own post, and the app turns out to be crap anyway.

That's how this site works, when you post something, you are the first positive vote.

        • +8

          stop nitpicking and move on.

got a problem with this system whinge in the forums.

        • First world problems.

        • +2

the point is, you must +VE its a bargain before you POST!

        • +5

If you don't think it's a bargain when you post it, then why post it? You obviously see value in a bargain to post it here.

          I don't think reps/referrals get a +ve on their posts though

        • -3

          @ JLove
          First world problems.

Such a boring comment these days

        • Yes skinny and berger, that was my point, if your posting the bargain, obviously you + it, you wouldn't post it if you were going to -ve it, therefore it shouldn't count. Same as with comments, try +ving your own comment, you can't do it. As said by annonimous, we shouldn't argue the case here, it belongs in the forums.

        • +4

Such a boring comment these days

Who said I was here to entertain you?
          Aren't you a humorous one! ;)

  • +3

Ozbargains twitter feed and Tweakdeck is all that I need. Only thing I would ever want is a notification for those rapid flash deals with lots of pluses.

Eg. Ozsale, Greys online coupons, paypal/ebay codes.

    • Not to mention free iTuness stuff, free games etc.

  • +6

I don't see the point in this, web browser works fine, should be free.

  • +7

It seems stupid to pay for an app to browse a website which doesn't actually add anything

    • +1

I agree. The Android market is plagued with useless apps as it is & this is no different.

  • +3

    so lame

  • +5

    should be free always

  • +5

    Hell NO!

  • The people have spoken.

  • +1

Gerry Harvey secretly got someone to make this app to target us professionals lol J/k

  • +1

+2409…that's what you see for this deal on free app's home tab. You don't even got +24 and you talking about 2k+….ridiculous….

  • No deal.

    Free: ozbargain.com.au

  • +1

    Seems kind of pointless.

    I've some interest in
"Push notification: receive deal notification instantly on if matches selections."
but would prefer to see it run on the ozb server, and send me an email when a saved search matches a new post. Then there is no need to clog my phone with more polling-syncing-battery draining apps.

  • +1

What the hell? 2407 pos vote.
They are trying to make money out of something that is free and are being dishonest.
Wonder if scotty could sue them

    • :0 Crazy

  • +1
  • I bought this app during a brief moment of insanity a few months back. Don't bother, it's much easier to add a bookmark shortcut to your home screen than use AND PAY for this.

I notice there's still a screenshot on play of there being a search button, good luck finding it.

EDIT: just downloaded it again to check and it now has the search button. Also used to have problems forgetting my login details. Not going to waste my time seeing if that's been fixed

  • -1

this is not a bargain AT ALL!.

  • -2

They should pay us money so that we can use it ozbargain. lol.

  • +2

If it was supporting Ozbargain I would pay, but from what I can make out this is s 3rd party app.

  • RSS feed + browser + twitter, in other words, apps I already use > this deal.

  • didn't even know about the free app !!!!!!

  • How about make it 100% discount instead of 50%?

    Ozbargainers love freebies :p

  • +1

LOL…an app for Oz bargain getting negged on Oz bargain! ! Just shows the others how rutheless we ozbargainers are!!!
BTW have had no idea about the free app. I prefer my browser :)

    • +1

Thats why people are negging it, who would use a $2 app to browse OzBargain? And compared to other app deals this is pretty poor, its only a $0.99 discount (50%), compared to, for example the current Need for Speed, normally over $5, and now free.

Whoever made the app is trying to make money off OzBargainers, by making an app that has less functions than the site, and costs money. Thats not being helpful, thats being rude (unless its an official app by OzBargain, which it certainly doesn't seem to be).

  • -3

It seems that Click_It's reputation has just gone downhill with this post! hah..

  • Nope. Waste of money

  • Can't see a settings tab to sign in?

    Nexus 7 paranoidandroid 2.54

    • Solved: Changed mode to phone :)

  • Agreed. Shouldn't be paying for something readily available for free.

  • this is not a bargain, cheaper on the internet (free)

  • +1

    Ask and thou shalt receive!

No one's asking to pay for it, dude.

And if you wanted to support OzBargain, this is obviously a bad way to do it.
Why not give directly to the mods of this site (for their time, paying for the server, etc.) instead of some stranger who just wanted to make a profit?

  • OzBargain has a great mobile website, which is free. There is no need for a paid app.

    • Mobile Web site? It's just the normal site…

      • What phone are you using that doesn't switch to the mobile site when browsing OzBargain?

        • Hmmm I was using Dolphin on my sgs2 but after you asked I checked and it was set to a desktop user agent… Must have changed a while back and forgot to change back. Oo

I want to use the opportunity and ask if Chrome crashes often for anyone else when trying to post a comment? This is on CM10… Been happening since I started using chrome so for a whole now.

        • I use Chrome exclusively on my Galaxy Nexus and 70% of the time on my Acer Iconia. It's getting a lot better these days. I love for its sync with desktop Chrome especially browsing history, so I can easily revisit pages on the phone that I've loaded on the desktop.

        • So does it ever crash?

+1 to the sync between devices, it is awesome! I use Chrome exclusively but just have problems with posting comments on OZB… Hence why I use Dolphin mainly for that.

Also I went and checked with the Nexus 7 & Chrome, it displays normal site even when "request desktop site" is ticked off, which might have also given me the impression that there is no mobile version. In all honesty you guys have done a really good job in making both sites look very similar so kudos!

        • Yes we check "Android" and "Mobile" from the user-agent string explicitly. For devices running in tablet mode it does not send "Mobile" so we revert back to the desktop site. Desktop site looks fine on 10" but I guess it's not ideal for 7". We probably need to do more responsive design so the desktop site scales better on 7" devices.

As of how often Chrome crashes, on Nexus devices it runs quite smoothly. On my Iconia however, it's getting a lot better these days but still occasional crashes. It's also running ICS as I haven't bothered to flash CM10 on it (still got some games I would like to finish first :) So maybe Jelly Bean would be better.

        • Cool thanks for the reply.

  • Not worth it, not a bargain.

  • Not so legit

  • Not a very good bargain?

    I use this:
    1. Feedly (Android)
    2. RSS feed
    3. Browse deals
    4. ???
    5. Profit! (or Save!)

  • "+2409"…
tamper with the vote & ur credibility goes from zero & to the scrap bin, whoever "you" are.

    • Yeah I just noticed this, what a laugh. Is there another Ozbargain app out there?

    • Not as I'm aware, then nor do I especially want for the thing. One may raise their chances of not missing out on deals by Subscribing Ozb 'Categories', letting the server email deals. Or use feeds. Or twitter. Or plain browsing.

  • +1

Wow I just checked in to see more neg votes than postive. That's fair, what isn't fair is negging me for upvoting my own deal (this is not even possible) and to the few who accused me of profiting I already stated I have nothing to do with this apps development. I shared a deal and that's all. Vote the deal on it's merits (which you have) but don't take it out on me personally.

Lesson learnt, I was going to raise this in the forums before contacting the devs. Next time, there won't be a next time.

And what's the +2409 all about? I have been working on a work manual all day and haven't checked into OzBargain at all since posting this so I hope there's no insinuating my involvement in anything suss here. If however there is something I should be aware of please let me know, or better yet, report the deal to a mod/scotty. But leave me alone, I'm Switzerland :)

    Cheers and goodnight OB's

    • +1

as someone said above "Just shows the others how rutheless we ozbargainers are!!!"

about the +2409 deal, open the free version of the app and you'll see. The advertisement for this sale is tampered with +2407 and -2407 (it was for fun I guess).

      Anyway this app is better than the suggested combinations of twitter+browser+etc. above, as it's all-in-one tool and compact;

BUT I can buy half cup of coffee with 99c! We're poor and can't afford 1 buck for an Ozbargain Android app!

      • Thanks for the clarification. And I'll admit I did go without half a cup of coffee yesterday to justify the expense ;)

      • +1

it was just +2407 at first. When we ozbargainer start pointing out the tamperting they added the -2407 to make it look like they did it for fun. Shifty practice in my opinion!

  • No deal…

  • Here's the screenshot @neil took when he tried out the free version:

    http://upload.ozbargain.com/2013/02/03/10646_screenshot_2013…

Note that an ad was masqueraded as a deal with +/- 2407 votes which might confuse its users. Not to mention that it's still using our old logo which we replaced more than a year ago…

Currently we pretty much have an open-to-all policy with app development. Everyone is free to develop an OzBargain (and profit from it), as long as it attributes back to OzBargain. Looks like it's no longer enough and we need to make sure app developers don't present the data they retrieved in a misleading way.

  • +4

Hi guys & girls! I'm the developer who made this app on Android. My apologise if I have upset some of you about the app. I didn't mean to tamper the app with positive votes and/or for any purpose.

The original purpose of the app was to provide quick access to OzBargain on Android. The Plus version was for those who want to show support to the project. I have never thought of it as a selling product. (if so I would have put it on "sale" and advertised 3 years ago when the app got published, not until now :D )

If you have used the free app for a while, you'll realise that new features on Plus version will always soon or late be available on Free version. The amount of dev time and money spent on the server to maintain the app during these years is actually more than the support money (which is about ~200 users after these years until now - thank you all).

The top deal always appears on some special events, such as Christmas, New Year or when OzBargain is down, with random messages . (last time was +0101 and -2013 votes during new year - again, if you have used it for a while you will be able to tell)

When developing the app I didn't build any thing special to highlight this sort of message. So I just make it appear on top with these random postername/votes to let everyone realise it's not from OzBargain. And it doesn't get down when new deal comes during time like normal deals form OzBargain.

    =================
There is no connection between me and the OP. The OP was just nice and emailed me to lower the price and I thought why not lower it down for those who want to test out push notifications.

I am 100% sure that the Free version does not have any 3rd advertisement - apart from these "funny" messages and the Plus version advertisement above if it counts. Hope I've cleared things up. Please don't blame the OP he was just trying to be nice.

Thank you for reading this post.

    • Thank you for taking ownership and giving the background of your project.

Push-notify with a sound 'ping' (w/o SMS) on #Popular deal might make a compelling add.

Kind wishes on the path of this app & hopefully it can be launched in here again.

  • When's thee likely to be an iPhone app?

Anyone have any idea if that's in the developers' minds?

  • Just tried it and looks OK, might keep it…
