7 inch Tablet Help

Hi, need some advice on a tablet.
I am happy to self help if there is a site that lets me plug in what I want and then lists available tablets.

If not, basically what I need is the Ainol Novo 7 Venus, $135 FREE Shipping, Quad-Core CPU/7"
http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/92159
as per the original specs that is, WITH GPS

Or, a Google NEXUS 7 16GB 7inch Wi-Fi Tablet $229.95
http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/91896
WITH HDMI AND SLOT FOR MEMORY CARD..

Not a fan of any brand in particular as long as it is around that $150 - $200 pricepoint
has the HDMI, GPS ,memory expansion slot and decent battery life (8hrs+or-)
Inbuilt sim slot like in Nexus would be a bonus obviously

I could live with a dual core if it ticked ALL the other boxes.

Any ideas?

Thanks in advance

  • Hi Mate,

AFAIK, Nexus 7 does not have memory card slot and inbuilt sim slot (except the 32gb version mobile data + wifi), and that is a bit more pricey ($349 from google play). aside of that, I like the build quality of nexus 7.

Galaxy tab 2 might be another option, it has memory card slot, but lower screen res than nexus 7 and no mobile data connection(it's $199 http://www.mln.com.au/product/?itemID=4118)

For basic usage, I think Ainol one should be a good deal.

    Cheers

    • If I was in the market for a seven inch tab right this minute, battery-life aside I'd be seriously considering this: http://www.liliputing.com/2013/01/hyundai-t7-tablet-with-qua… As far as I know Pandawill are quite reputable, although when I went to buy I'd be checking to see if Merimobiles had it in stock. Hope that helps.
Might be better sorted than some Ainol tablets out of the box. Might get an update to Jellybean sooner rather than later. Might - with little wheels attached - double as a small car for a small pet!

      • Thanks but poor battery life means the hyundai is out

    • delete

    • Thanks for that, didnt realise the sim slot was on the more expensive models only
No HDMI sh1tcans it for me regardless.

Hmmm, this was supposed to be a reply to poster andz88

      • For data, it's easy enough to tether off a smartphone or use a pocket wi-fi type hotspot.
If you think the battery capacity is going to leave you in the lurch in the middle of Woop-Woop, consider buying a small or not so small lithium juicepack. Well under twenty dollars for a small one.
There has never been any Nexus device with memory card slot and unlikely to ever be. There is a vague rumour that the update to the Nexus 7 will be a 7.7 device and that it may have a card slot in order to compete with the just-to-be-officially-announced Samsung Note 8. Don't bet your house on it.

        • Yes, that's how I currently use my hopefully soon to be replaced laptop.
Battery is not that much of an issue that I would carry YET ANOTHER device with me, its just that if the nexus and novo7 can get hi battery life I dont see why others cant as well, even if it costs a few dollars more.
Same for the gps and hdmi, what are we talking about here, $20 in bits?

Show me the $180 ainol/cube/Onda with the lot.

  • the closest to me was the samsung galaxy 7.7 but it needs a dongle for hdmi and usb out so i have that one

    i'd buy a 7" tablet with 1,280 x 800 that has SD, BT, GPS + hdmi + usb charging

i'd buy a 10" tablet with the above but with a retina screen

so far my search has been futile

    • Interesting device but no GPS?

Also an interesting comment in this article http://www.cnet.com.au/samsung-galaxy-tab-7-7-wi-fi-16gb-339…

      "App support

Although Samsung has no control over this one area, it is worth pointing out that the smaller 7.7-inch display still struggles with the majority of apps on the Android Market, as these apps were originally designed for smaller smartphone screens. Even major apps like Facebook display unusually, with tiny text crammed into the corners of the screen, rather than making use of the entire display."

Is this still a problem with this and other 7 inch tabs or has it been addressed 12 mths down the track?

And of course lets not forget " but we can't overlook the absence of important connectivity features, like HDMI and micro USB."

Again, not quite there but thanks anyway.

      • it was only $200 so i can live with it

        it does have gps

there's one 10" from ainol that comes close so i'm keeping any eye out for that

    • Rather poor battery life.

  • Davros, I have a GT7.7, and it's a brilliant device. I didn't mention it because the little remaining stock (it was discontinued because of the cost of producing the Super Amoled Plus screen) is out of your specified price range. Most recent posted deal was just a few days ago on OzBargain (surprised any remaining stock still kicking around).
The app scaling issue affects only a few apps that I use, and the thing is that even when you choose not to enable a 'fit to screen' option in the app settings, the screen is so surreal in its touch accuracy - truly unlike anything else I've ever used - that you have no difficulty clicking on even the smallest icon. It's almost as if it's reading your bloody mind. Uncanny really.
By the way, it has MHL (HDMI) support via USB (cheaper options than Samsung dongle available), cable-free DLNA support via Samsung's Allshare app if you have a Samsung TV, Blu-Ray player or Allcast box - and given that you seem to be so keen on battery life - how does 10 hours+ sound? Only just recently, and slightly, knocked off its perch by new iPad(4).

  • Battery life is great but I should have said earlier that this is a device for travel in lands where hotels rarely even have an English channel, so if stuck in room its nice to have "something" if wanting to waste a few hours in a/c comfort before the next onslaught out.

I can play my stuff on hotel lcd's via HDMI ( I do it now with laptop) but I cant see them having "cable-free DLNA support via Samsung's Allshare app if you have a Samsung TV, Blu-Ray player or Allcast box"

  • That's why I mentioned the MHL compatibility - which outputs HDMI. I use a $9 unit everyday with my Galaxy Note phone that outputs perfect (and I do mean perfect) 1080p. I have a couple of cheap (few bucks) plug adapters I have bought so I can use it with the 7.7 dock connector - just haven't bothered to yet. The tab screen is big enough for what I use it for. By the way, the extra point seven of an inch doesn't sound like much of a difference over what you're thinking of buying - until you experience it.

  • OK Tas, had a look at few youtube vids and that seems pretty good
Also, I was getting mixed up a bit as I had a mate talking galaxy note II to me and somewhere in that I got galaxy S2 mixed in, both which are not much better than a bloody phone in size.

GT7.7 is a different beasty again and fits the bill except for current price
Now just to wait for this to happen again http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/87361

    Thanks

    • i can go on and on about whats wrong with the galaxy 7.7

      its stuck on ics

the single pop port means you cant have usb + hdmi at the same time

      you cant charge off use

      it needs custom cables

but… it was only $200 and my kid loves it so… you cant get everything

      • Personally, I'm happy with ICS. Not as smooth as Jellybean, but a leap on Honeycomb.
Yes, you can't have usb OTG concurrent with the MHL connection, but tablet charges via any MHL device connected. As for cables, tablet comes with a dock connector to usb cable for OTG connection and for charging from something other than the supplied charger. Was your cable missing from the box? Couple of bucks replacement on ebay if so.

        • nah i'm just friggin' lazy

i have devices that use mini/micro usb and i'd rather just plug n charge it off usb rather than custom

  • Nothing seems to do everything which is what sh1ts me as many are close but for $20 in bits, and I am happy to pay that bit extra, just not several hundreds of dollars extra.

Like I said at the start, give me the Ainol with GPS or the Nexus with HDMI and I'd be pulling the trigger now.

  • I have used pandawill.com to attempt to order the Ainol Novo Fire previously; paid and after waiting for weeks they could not give me an idea as to when it would be delivered. So, I got my money back (less the bloody Comm Bank visa charge for FX transactions!)

That said; pandawill has quite a neat "tablet spec" filter that allows you to browse their offerings.

I picked up an Ampe A10 from zzkko.com (no tablets there now?); delivered for about $165. Reasonably happy with it.

  • Get the Google NEXUS 7 16GB 7inch Wi-Fi Tablet $229.95

    • Please read the requirements

      HDMI

    • Please read the requirements

      decent battery life (8hrs+or-)

      • smaller die size of cpu might make it 6-8hrs possible.
i have ainol elf 2 it last around 6-8hrs depends what u use.

ainol advanced only last 4-6max due to bigger die size

got huawei sonic vs huawei Y201, same battery, different cpu, but Y201 last longer

Again, how adventurous are you of trying out different roms? risk of bricking?
        if it's none, get samsung/ acer etc……
most china brand out of box is so so…… after flashed CM10 or customised rom, it's splendid

  • Yeah, I have no issue doing it but I would want to know I would have an "actual" result vs theoretical before buying.

  • Anyone comment on the battery life of the Nexus 7. Sorry for hijacking your thread.

  • Yeah, that Hyundai T7 is looking better by the day, just need to get a powerbank to go with it.
Waiting for pandawill to get back telling me which one they supply for $27.
And to make sure the GPS is "real" not aGPS or some wifi connect version.
