This is the new Boost mobile service through Telstra.
The offer is basically a preorder or a new Boost sim (to be dispatched in the first week of March) that will have $10 free credit ($10 recharge is 5 days unlimited)

So make use of the free 5 days, or even if you continue with their service it's quite reasonably priced (for full Telstra Next G rather than Kogans Telstra wholesale offering).

Recharge Data Expiry
$10 500MB 5 Days
$20 1GB 15 Days
$40 3GB 30 Days

The benifit in Boost over Kogan is that it's full Telstra 3G access whereas Kogan has limited access and the data speed is throttled to 7.2Mbps

We'll get you a Boost Mobile Golden SIM delivered for FREE & give you a $10 FREE recharge to get you tasting our new service. You use and abuse (They're asking you to abuse it) and we're sure you'll be a keeper…

Let's keep this simple… Get a Boost Mobile Golden SIM by entering some of your details. We'll just need to verify your identity with a temporary $1 transaction on your credit or debit card. This amount will be reimbursed shortly after and usually takes only a few hours but can take 3-10 business days.

Great to know about, but still damn expensive in the long run at $40/month.

    • If you don't go bush or care for data speeds then Kogan is better value (just talking Telstra resellers here).

      • +2

Based on the whirlpool discussion, first post suggests its on the the Next G network not the wholesaled "3G" network. So speeds and coverage should be similar to Next G.

      • or care to much for reception whilst inside

    • If they provide full LTE… even 21Mbps download speed would be great.

      I pay $49 with Telstra and I get $550 credit + Unlimited TXT + 1.5GB data

1.5GB is so not sufficient. I might switch to this

  • +4

The $10 plan would be great for tourists…

    • +3

Too bad you require Aussie Passport and Driver License

      • +3

        nope you don't
I already connected to Voda and Optus with a Russian passport, promised to provide details later, but never did

        • +22

in soviet russia telco gives you id

        • same here had a mate from the UK visit, he grabbed a $2 Optus sim, showed his Passport and he still has it, expires in a year or so i think… lol

        From http://www.acma.gov.au/WEB/STANDARD/pc=PC_1899

When you buy a pre-paid mobile phone service you must give certain information to the mobile phone service provider before you can use your phone. You may provide it when you buy the pre-paid mobile service or later, but it must be provided before your pre-paid service can be activated.

If you are paying by cash or cheque, you must show the service provider either one of the Category A documents listed OR two of the listed Category B documents. These documents must be current.

        Category A
current student card issued by a tertiary education institution
licence or permit issued under Commonwealth, State or Territory law - for example, a driver's licence
        passport
Centrelink pension, benefit or health care card
        birth certificate
a document that is recognised as a proof of identity under Commonwealth, State or Territory law - for example, a Keypass card.

        Category B
credit, debit or ATM card (with your name and signature)
        Medicare card in your name
passbook from a bank issued in your name
recent fixed network telephone bill issued in the last 12 months showing the name and address you have given the service provider
local council rates statement issued in the last 12 months showing the name and address you have given the service provider.

        • edit: retracting silly comment. :)

  • Clicking on Rates up the top gets a 404 error on the Telstra site….

why do they need a mobile number to join? porting existing number?

    • +1

      From the FAQ

So looks you can get a new number.

      • But what will they do with the number I type in? Any danger they will port that?

        • +1

Won't be ported until the service is ready in March

        • +3

But I don't want it ported!

        • I've already ordered one but I dont want to port my number. what do i do?

    • So they can contact you if required.

  • +1

How long do you have to activate? E.g. can I hang on to it until I go on a short trip?

  • +1

interesting waiting for a kogan sim to test before porting away from telstra postpaid this might be an option as i need the telstra coverage where i live

  • +14

Sounds good, but too much information to give out for just 5 days usage.

    • what info is it that concerns you? thanks.

      • Everything. I'd prefer to keep using my $10 Telstra SIMs rather than divulging all my information for a 5 day trial. Better the devil you know.

      • +4

Plus you are giving all this information over an unencrypted site (its not HTTPS), which we are always told is not wise.

      • Just checked the website and it appears that the frames where all the personal information is provided through are indeed secured.

  • +4

had to give wayyyyyyyyyy too much info =/

  • +1

Hi Guys, this is pretty much the same deal under the OLD Boost..(i.e. $40 unlimited, 3GB data on 3G network + unlimted txt)

    • +4

But instead of being on the Optus network you will be on the Telstra network, that's a fairly big difference for no additional cost.

  • +7

Agreed, Unity. They did not put in enough answer options for the questions 'How long have you lived at this address?' and 'Do you own/rent/board/live with parents?'
For mine, the correct answer to those questions is 'Mind your own damn business'

  • +1

Looks about a 20% saving compared to Encore from memory, given that had flat-rate evening and a lot of credit. You can still buy Google play of course?

$20 OptusWoolworths buys me~45 days instead of 15 & I just use VoIp for the rest; so I'm good.

  • +1

I agree with unity1, It is a good deal, but requires too much info, I mean Passport and Driver License requirements is getting a bit out of hand for a five day use.

    • +1

      …and your credit card details.

      • I always use a debit card on those cheap and free deals requiring credit card.

  • -8

    5 days is nothing.

    • +8

It is something, it is 120 hours or 7200 mins or 432000 seconds of usage.

      • +2

        i like numbers

        • 42?

        • 84?

      • +2

does it take that long to dl 0.5 gb?

      • +1

"The Count " is that you?

    • +2

Actually princess, it's five more days than nothing.

  • +6

    $40 per month isn't good.

  • +1

data is charged in MB blocks, the extra allowance does make up for it though.

  • +1

+'ed, cos' I like your avatar.

  • site down?

  • argh, looks like it got ozBargained. Damn you all :P

  • +8

How many carat is the Golden SIM?

  • +3

note: cant access the 4G network… "However, Boost Mobile customers will not have access to the Telstra 4G network." (from the FAQ)

would still prefer Kogan due to the 6Gb@ $29 / mth

  • Would get one if I wasn't halfway through my prepaid.

Could someone put up a speed test after they receive their sims :)
I'm looking for a decent speed carrier which allows tethering after my RedBull prepaid expired.
    Redbull has decent speeds: http://www.speedtest.net/iphone/431016989.png
Finding something matching this will make my day.

    • Redbull has can have decent speeds, or appalling speeds.

    • Very interested if someone may do a Kogan/boost/Telstra Retail from the same address.
      Look forward.

  • +1

Considering that a $40 Telstra Pre-Paid recharge will only give you 600MB of data, and that 4G is not readily available everywhere yet, this is a good deal. Kogan Mobile is cheaper, though an extra $10 per month is worth it for superior reception and faster download speeds, in my opinion.

  • Normal Telstra prepaid user here, I get a $50 recharge voucher, that gets me $950 'cap credit' (for use on calls and sms/mms etc) $50 actual credit, which I use to purchase a browse pack of 3GB, so end result of $50 = $950 cap credit/3.8GB Data.

With full access to 4G I'd say I'm better off where I am

    EDIT: mistyped

    • +1

Well if there's a 30 expiry with your method, then its still $10 more than boost. Only way your method would be better is if it had 60 or more expiry time

      • Except an extra 800Mb data and access to 4G, then again If I didn't have a 4G phone I probably wouldn't need the extra.

        • I'm lost, how on earth do you get a browser pack of 3GB with the $50 credit? The $50 recharge only gives you 2GB of data.

I feel like a retard here because I can't make out how you get the extra data. I'm on a business plan, I pay $50 per month and get a data pack for $15 to = 2GB a month and something like $450 worth of calls.

        • $49
          3GB / 30 days
          CODE:
          BROWSEPLUS49

Pretty sure round is per kB too. (in contrast to: 'wholesale)

          And thus, $13.15/GB(4GTelstra) > $13.33/GB(3GBoost).

  • No nano sim card??

    • +6

you dont get as much gold in a nano sim.

  • I'm assuming this would be fine to stick in the Telstra MF91 modem?

  • +2

    2 issues

    1. It wants my existing mobile number which I dont want to transfer as yet.

    2. Submitting my credit card details and it's not a secure site

    Anyone have any answers?

    • +2

Give me your credit card details and I'll submit it securely for you :)

Don't worry about the extra $1000 they just put a hold on it for a few days.

    • +1

The site does appear to be secure (using SSL). It's not obvious, but if you run a HTTP session trace, you'll see that the connections to the telstra site are in fact encrypted.

The address-bar doesn't mention any of this since it's done within an iframe, so I can understand that you'd be cautious.

  • Just tried registering and the site crashes just before the payment page!

  • +1

Honestly not sure if it's worth it. I currently have Telstra Pre paid and the way prepaid encore works is amazing (nearly too much so IMO).

  • it says unlimited to standard national numbers.

Does that include mobiles or only land lines?

  • yair..Do you needs > 40 dollars or a separate co., to reach overseas numbers?

I just realized that with my ISP I do get these, although it's not equal w/ 'UNLTD'.

    • The $29 Woolworths Prepaid Cap includes $29 Credit and $221 MyBonus which can be used for standard national and international calls and text, internet browsing and international roaming.

    • 5GB/45 days

    • <$24.80 after Everyday discount/ING Paywave.

Also: A maximum of $29 (for a $29 recharge) can be used for premium SMS and content.

…Seems as tho you might be left out-of-pocket on those kinda incidentals.

MInus-: foxtel, 4G speeds, Telstra facilities, and even 'Play store purchases.

  • Site getting hammered?

  • +1

This is the first time I've heard of an MVNO reselling the whole Telstra 3G network. At $40 for unlimited & 3GB, its a great deal for heavy users! Its a pity international calls are so expensive, but hey its unlimited on Next G.

    • -3

KOGAN MOBILE was and is the first to resell Telstra 3G,

      • Think Mobile did it way before Kogan.

        • and Macquaire Telecom before Think (corporate only though)

        • Neither Kogan nor Think Mobile resell the WHOLE Telstra 3G network. They only have access to a small fraction - roughly 46%. And the speed is also gimped.

    • This is only because Boost is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Telstra now.

  • anyone get their sims yet?

    • +2

Yes. Today. Comes in a pretty 'golden' waterproof pouch. Nice bonus with having a kid who is a dinghy sailor (and has tragically drowned several handsets over the last few years). Just need to get him to use the pouch (and seal it!).

I'll try this out just as soon as I have a trip (after Easter) into areas with known dodgy Optus reception…

  • Just received my sim in the mail today!

    • Ditto. Long expiry date on the SIM (Feb 2015) but not sure about the 5-day unlimited call voucher.
