I don't think it worth $600+ for this old phone.

    • +6

I'm not quite sure but I think but you let your judgement clouded your decision - the neg as the purpose of ozbargain is the lowest price of an item.

So the right thing to do is to neg this with a link to a lower price to get the same item?

      • -6

        Ok, a hypothetical then.

Say I sell stools. I make them myself and they're unique. I advertise them at $10 000 000 AUD. As they're unique, no other place stocks these items.

Is it now a bargain because you can't link to a lower price for the same item?

Protip: If you want to use the rules as a leg to stand on, try actually quoting something relevant out of them. Just linking as you have done, in such a long document, smacks of laziness.

        • A lot of butt hurt Crapple fanbois downvoting today, LOL.

This is a lot of money for an obsolete phone.

I think whoever Apple is sourcing their internal memory from is pulling the wool over their eyes. I paid $42 for a Class 10 64GB SDXC on Amazon a while back. Apple could probably source similar memory cheaper than I can. They'd at least get a volume discount.

Hopefully memory will be cheaper on the iPhone 5S. Oh who am I kidding…

        • you cant have an iphone/android deal without the fanboy debate :)

What do you think of this one?

        • What do you think of this one?

I think it is a scam.

  • +2

I'll never understand how one could require so much space - especially on a 3.5" phone - and would be willing to pay so much for it.

    • -4

I agree with you and have always thought the same. 64GB on a phone? Pointless. Pay $100 on top of this (or less) and get yourself a 4G enabled 16GB iPhone 5 instead.

      • +1

Quite easily actually. I have a 32GB and its not enough for me. I watch a lot of TV shows as i commute to work on a daily basis and sometimes want to dump a whole series of something so it lasts me a while. Right now i can only dump about 5 seasons of something (assuming a season contains about 20 episodes), but there are times when i have a series of 10 seasons and want to put them all onto the phone at once but I'm limited to do so because of the size.
Not to mention all the other stuff on the phone, music, pictures, apps and so on.
It really doesn't take much to use up all of the 32GB.

        • +4

But why not be efficient about it, and just load up enough for each week / trip? Is it really necessary to have 10 seasons on your phone, all at once? You're paying quite a bit extra, merely for the 'convenience' of not having to refresh your phone's content every so often.

        • +4

how long would the battery last for? probably…..3 episodes?
Delete and reload while Charging? might save couple hundred dollars by doing that buying a 16GB iphone

        • +1

Do you watch all of those seasons in one commute? If not, the extra episodes aren't being watched anyway, so it's not important that they be on there.

sometimes want to dump a whole series of something so it lasts me a while.

Why do you need to do that? You recharge your phone daily anyway right? Can't you while it's recharging and connected to your PC, remove the old episodes and transfer the next set on?

Watch one season, then delete it, and when you're next charging it, transfer the next season on. It's not disrupting you or requiring your attention since it will transfer by itself in the background while you do other things.

If you want to pay what Apple charges you per GB, it's your prerogative I guess. It's un-OzB like to pay for things at low value for money though.

    • So it's justifiable on a 4" phone?

      • +1

        Did I say that? No.
The size was only a contributing factor, since it's hardly preferable (and for me, completely not worth it) to be watching videos on such a small screen. 5" phone or a tablet? Not so bad.

      • -3

Yes, because Apple is teh b0mb

Sent from my Galaxy Note 2

      • Neither the 3.5" or 4" phones are HD resolution. That means you don't need to load it up with HD sized videos, and can use lower res vids which take up less space.

I think that might have been the point he was trying to make.

I don't mind the size that much, but it's the lack of HD that bothers me. It's resolution is in a no man's land non-standard res in between two standard resolutions, It's less than HD so you will lose information if watching in HD, but it's more than SD which means it has to stretch and not look as good (or be watched in bordered mode, wasting some screen real estate).

Their reason for not making it HD is because they didn't want to increase the width of the phone because they wanted people to be able to use it with one hand still. I don't know anyone who can't use a 5" phone with one hand anyway. It's not that much wider.

Errr…your life maybe? If you gather photos, videos (that you take), MMS/SMS/Eemail, music from several years of your life you get a fair few gigabytes

I guess some people have more of a life than others…

      • +1

Why would you keep your life on your phone, though? You couldn't possibly need all the information stored locally on your device - music, perhaps, but my point above about refreshing content still holds true.

If you do need to access that information often, the cloud is a much better solution, since it can be accessed from anywhere, and isn't in danger when the phone is dropped.

In most cases I can think of, the cloud, 4G and music streaming services practically eliminate the need for a high amount of local storage (the exception being apps).

And I feel I need to include a disclaimer before people get too pissed: no, not bashing Apple, yes, it's my opinion.

        • +5

Local data storage is always faster than "the cloud", why would you stream your videos/music when you can have them locally?

3 major reasons to store locally:
          - No Network Data Usage $$
          - Speed to access is instant
          - Can view with no reception/credit

Also if you want to show family/friends something it's there

iCloud can automatically backup your phone to the cloud which makes it bullet proof, you can easily restore it to any Apple device

        • Local data storage is always faster than "the cloud", why would you stream your videos/music when you can have them locally?

3 major reasons to store locally:
          - No Network Data Usage $$
          - Speed to access is instant
          - Can view with no reception/credit

That question would be best directed at the many people that use Spotify and Youtube on a regular basis. I suppose the most obvious answer (for me) is: "Because I don't want to pay more for extra storage" - hence my comments.

I still don't think those reasons warrant the initial cost of increased storage, though. The network usage and credit points should be irrelevant to anyone on a plan (as you'd expect with such an expensive phone). Given that many people live in a city (even non-major ones), I'd say reception shouldn't be too much of a concern, either (unless you're on Vodafone, of course). This is generally speaking, of course.

Honestly, even on HSPA, the loading speeds for Dropbox and Google Drive aren't that terrible - the difference wouldn't be so bad (especially with the roll out of 4G). I can't speak for iCloud, but Google Drive lets you pin things for local use, so your most important files are available locally as well.

All that said, I still don't see why people can't just refresh their content. The average joe wouldn't require critical documents and files on their smartphones at all times.

  • Wouldn't buy it for this price.

According to this article, the Iphone is no longer cool among teens, but it is still hot amongst Gen X and older peoples.

    • +1

Holding a place in line for their parents in the Samsung Galaxy S3 Ad sums that vision up.

    • These so called 'teens' are more impressed by the Microsoft tab? yep…

    • +1

Gen X here. Just bought 64GB iPhone 5. I don't think it's cool either, I was quite happy with my iphone 4, but my wife wants an iPhone so now she gets it.

I don't think Android is cool either but it is showing more signs of development. Stuck with iPhone (my 4th) because I can't be arsed learning Android. It's going to do the same things that I do on the iPhone anyway so no desire to change…

For some of the above questions about "why buy 64gb"? Well because I can afford it, so why piss around with updating content and managing storage for the sake of $100?

Incidentally I paid $859 for it, will get GST back through my company, and write it off as a business expense so not a huge cost.

      • +1

I can't be arsed learning Android. It's going to do the same things that I do on the iPhone anyway so no desire to change…

There's not much to learn really. I think it's easier for an iOS user to learn Android than the reverse. Not having a back button or options button was just annoying for me.

You'll find it does some things, or rather doesn't do some things that Apple does… such as restrict you with that stupid iTunes program that you need to transfer your media over. It also plays MKVs natively with hardware acceleration (iOS can only do it via software, and requires third party apps). The Androids also don't treat it's users like fools by disabling email attachments (to send a pic you have to open the pic, and click on the options to send it to someone — now imagine you want to attach a lot of files…). Even when you open your web mail client in the browser (Safari), instead of giving you exactly what you would have seen on a desktop, they removed the ability to attach files.

If you're into buying phones outright, it will also cost you significantly less, and you get used to having sales on and price cuts instead of the phone being the same price for a whole year. You can also get HD screens and other improvements that Apple hasn't caught up on. For example, Samsung phones can detect when you're reading the screen and won't fade or turn it off while you're reading it.

More flexibility. Instead of one model only, you can choose from a range of devices by different manufacturers with different sized screens, specs, and features according to your needs.

UPDATE: With iOS6 it seems Apple has finally allowed you to attach files in the compose mail screen. However, they still only allow images and videos. Don't want you to be sending .doc or .zip files now. That's too risky. You could infect some poor unsuspecting victim with trojans after all. Apple doesn't want to risk it since a large number of computer illiterate noobs who don't know they have viruses do use these devices.

For some of the above questions about "why buy 64gb"? Well because I can afford it, so why piss around with updating content and managing storage for the sake of $100?

If you're lucky enough to wipe your arse with $100 notes, then no reason at all. Some of us unlucky people buy based on necessity and value for money because we're not loaded.

You already got a "good" deal on your 64GB since it's meant to retail for $999, which is more than a $100 price difference over the 16GB version (it's $200 actually). Still overpriced for what you're getting, but better than spending 1k on a phone.

      • …because I can't be arsed learning Android.

It's not a foreign language, it's an operating system. You can prefer what you want, of course, but the assumption that Android is somehow too complex to master is completely false.

    Over-priced for outdated phone

    • +2

I get neged for stating that I wouldn't buy it for this price, and IMBI3 states that it is over priced and gets a positive vote?

  • How much is the cheapest deal on iPhone 5 16GB? About $100 more than this?

  • +3

Apart from the standard apple issues (flash etc), can anyone really tell me that they used the Iphone 4S right to its limit and found they were unable to do something they wanted to do? I mean, maybe you have .15 second delay over the iphone 5 but its hardly 'outdated' in the sense of unuseable - just not the most up to date. And its not like anyone needs the most up to date, really

    • But 4S has shorter lifespan than 5. In a few years new apps will no longer support 4S well before 5 is rendered obsolete too. For example many apps now don't work on iPhone 3G.

    • Adobe flash no longer supports Android either.

I have a 4S, its actually a very good phone, I dont have any lag.

      • Do you know how easy it is to install flash on an android device still?

    • Incorrect. The iPhone 4S has an A5 chip, the same processor that runs the iPad Mini. This phone will continue to be supported for just as long as the newly released Mini.

  • Far too expensive & outdated. Apple needs to set realistic prices for old stock if they really want to ship them

  • +4

It may be the cheapest around, but $629.99 for such an old phone isn't a deal/bargain no matter which way you look at it.

  • yeah, totally ripoff for an outdated model with such price, and if someone is after storage, even a mid range galaxy plus a couple of microsd cards would do the trick with substantially less.

  • Im neg.ing the post because the product is defective. Within the rules I believe :)

  • +2

Neg because the seller is giving the warranty (not Apple AU) and because they have no right to have that .au domain, so misleading.

  • Over priced for old phone when a competitors phone (Android) for less $$ can do more without being locked in!

  • This phone will be awesome for my Grandma :)

    • +1

      Can I be your grandma?
