whats the point of having a 20gb ssd?

    • +4

load faster with an SSD Boot drive.

      • Pretty sure the OS isn't stored on the SSD cache.

        • +4

To summarise Chris McMahon's video in a basic fashion: it caches your most accessed files, and system boot files (note: not the OS itself) for faster access - therefore increasing bootup times, and loading times for programs.

    • +3

It's a cache for the HD.

Seems like a reasonable deal although my grudge is against ACER, where I bought my current laptop from JB and the sales rep told me there is a cashback offer, however when I tried to enter all the information online the webpage kept rejecting my information. After an unhelpful discussion with a ACER rep over the phone, I was told the promotion does not run to include all units sold even if they are of the same model, it is the part/unit number (something like that) that determines eligibility of the cashback. It sounded very fishy at the time and ACER told me there's nothing they can do and JB claimed that the promotion has ended and they do not have any record to trace back my purchase to check eligibility of cashback. In the end I just gave up.

I would suggest potential buyers to call ACER and find out if they will in fact get the cashback before making the purchase.

    • Sounds like JB got it wrong and told you there was a cashback when in fact there wasn't.

It would have been a cashback on a particular model within the series, not the whole series of notebooks.
(Eg One specification of Aspire 1111, not all Aspire 1111's)

Acer are good at chasing up elligble cashbacks. They don't, however, bend the rules.

The reason companies do cashbacks is because only between 30 and 40% of them are ever claimed.

If you had kept your receipt, you should have gone after JB to chase it up for you - and if the mistake was theirs, the would have needed to give you a full refend, or honour the cashback themselves.

      • That's what I thought, but I do remember asking the Acer rep that if I purchase two identical units, is there a chance that one is eligible and the other one is not, the answer was a very firm "yes".

I had my receipt as this was within one week of purchasing, JB did offer to give me a refund but my previous laptop was stolen and I needed a laptop for my overseas trip so I've decided to keep the laptop. Haven't had any quality issues though.

This was 599$ after cashbook 2 weeks ago from onlinecomputer.com.au. It's gone up now, so I guess this is the next best offer.

  • Also note that its NOT $149 cashback. It's $149 CASHCARD.

    • and?

      • It's not cash (cheque)…. as one would expect from a "cashback"

        • -3

          and?

        • Just wondering where can we use this cash card? Planning to buy ACER laptop with cash back but unsure about cash card.

        • +2

cash card is like a normal eftpos card. It cash and you can spend anywhere that accept eftpos. Cash card is actually better than cheque, you can spend it straight away, for cheque you have to bank it and wait a few day for it to clear. If you just want cash, just go McDonald buy a softserve and ask for cash out. Most cash back offer are cash card these day as it is more convienence.

I just bought this laptop for $898 from MSY with almost identical specs (ram is 4gb on mine).
Was going to buy it from one of those other online retailers but read bad reviews about their service so forked out the extra $40 to get it from a brick n mortar store I was familiar with.

The Acer cashback is pretty easy to do, just need to cut the snid from the box and send it with a form and copy of tax invoice, iirc. I did that and received a confirmation email within a week telling me I'd get my cashcard in a few weeks.

The laptop itself, I'd agree with most of the reviews out there. It's a great laptop for light-medium gaming (I play dota 2 and borderlands 2 and they run perfectly). Cores and GPU hover at about 80-85 degrees so not advisable to use on lap when gaming. Otherwise, temps stay around 50 during normal use and is pretty quiet.

My main gripe is with the display, because it really is terrible. Viewing angles are bad, the gloss reflects everything during the day and resolution is maxed at 1366x768.
All the ports being on the back of the machine does become a bit annoying if constantly using diff peripherals, but it's not really that big of a deal for me.
The built-in mic is not very good when I've used it in games or in skype. Other people complain that it sounds really fuzzy or simply cant hear.

I can't say too much about load times as I haven't paid much attention. But, I do notice waking from sleep or hibernate is near-instant and I think that's where the msata ssd comes into play.

If you've read all this plus the reviews elsewhere and it meets your requirements then with the cashback/cashcard it's a decent bargain imo. What sold it for me was the ability to game decently and the relatively low price compared to the more hardcore gaming machines which generally start at $1000.

If you don't need the dedicated graphics card (which is the main selling point of this 'ultrabook'), then there are many bargains that would be better than this.

I just checked, it is $818 at msy. http://www.msy.com.au/product.jsp?productId=969

I was interested in this laptop because it can run applications program faster, but were hesitant to buy because it only has 3 USB ports instead of 4. Was thinking about getting a bluetooth mouse so that it will use one USB port less. Again that will be extra cost in the equation not to mention the ongoing cost with batteries.

Secondly, can all the cash be withdrew from the cash card from an ATM machine?

Even if you do not like Acer notebook builds this would make a pretty powerful and bargain HTPC with a wireless kb + trackpad.
