Sleep Ambience - Free Android App with Free Add-on (Normally $1.99)

1470

UPDATE: Just finished lunch and found the number of emails to be a bit over 300. I'll send the free add-on to everyone who's emailed me so far, but I'm going to have to cut it there. For those who missed out, the app itself is free with 128 sounds and the add-on pack is half price for today. Thanks everyone for the support!

Hi everyone! This morning I released my first Android app, and being a member of the OzBargain community I've noticed we all like free stuff, so I'm giving away 300 copies of the paid add-on.

Sleep Ambience is an app that allows you to create custom ambient/white noise to help with sleeping/relaxing.

The app itself will always be free. It is the Beach sound pack add-on that is not free, but I will be giving it away for free to the first 300 OzBargainers who send me an email.

These are the details for the email:

Address: [email protected]

Subject: I'm an OzBargainer and I like free stuff, so gimme gimme gimme!

For those who miss out, you can still download Sleep Ambience for free and enjoy 128 free sounds! The Beach pack is currently $0.99 for the first 24 hours, but after that it will change to its permanent price of $1.99.

As I will be processing this manually please be patient. It might take a day or two to get through all of you but I'll get there!

will we get spam or any further correspondence after you get our emails ?

    • +2

Haha, I didn't even think of that! Nah, certainly won't be. This isn't a mailing list or anything. In fact, it's not even the official support email. This is my personal email.

  • Great app :)

    • +1

Hey thanks! I'm glad to hear that! I've been a little nervous about how it'd be received, being my first attempt at anything like this. It's certainly a new venture for a lowly med student with no formal IT education.

  • Thanks jazoom!

  • good one! will buy.

  • email sent. cheers

    • just for the e-mail subject line :P
  • ta email sent cool app

  • Thanks geezer… can't wait to try it out tonight, I love these sort of apps.

  • Thanks!
    Installing it right now!
Email sent for beach pack…. pleeeeez!

  • The anonymous error reporting has told me that a couple of people have had the same crash. Can anyone confirm the details of this? Are you able to use the app at all or does it crash on opening?

I'm currently waiting for my car to get serviced so I'll try to fix the problem when I get home later today and update the app.

    • +1

I got a crash when I was loading rainforest night but second time all good

      • Thanks for that. I hate those crashes that only happen sometimes haha. Might be difficult to track that one down, but I'll have a crack at it later today!

  • Email sent. I like the idea of using the same subject for all emails too.

    • You'd be surprised of how many different subjects I'm getting, though. Haha… I guess it didn't quite work out.

      • Urgh yes I'm an ozb saw free and disregarded the rest of the description sorry :-P

        • +6

Do you even have an Android phone? :P

        • Oh dear, I'm one of those, read bits but not all… :?

      • +4

        Should do something like

        mailto:[email protected]?subject=I%27m+an+OzBargainer+and+I+…

As the link above to people don't type in their own Subject line :)

        • Hey that's a pretty good idea!

  • +ve for support but probably won't be too useful for me since I get to sleep as soon as I hit the pillow. :P

  • Thanks Jarom

This will be great when travelling next year.
I have sent you an email for the Beach app.

no bugs with first use - I like the street drummers!

    • Thanks! My wife didn't like that sound and would have been happy for me to get rid of it haha! I'm glad I kept it in.

  • Thanks OP, not taking up the offer as I don't have an android phone :) but +1 for support!

  • Thanks OP. Hopefully I will get one copy. :-D

  • thanks OP

  • thanks OP e-mail sent

  • nice!

  • Emailed!

  • Awesome app. I love how you can construct your own combinations.

I like the fridge and construction background sounds, but they fade out at the end which is irritating, can you get them to loop better? Also getting mushy sound quality due to over-compression on tracks with lots of treble.

    • Thanks for the feedback!

With regards to the background sounds looping better, unfortunately some Android phones are notorious for looping issues: http://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=18756. I will continue to look into ways around it. In fact, my phone does this (Galaxy Nexus)!

Which tracks in particular are the main offenders for mushy quality? I tried hard to get a balance between fairly consistent perceived volumes throughout the sounds and not compressing too much, but with 160 sounds I was bound to stuff up a few.

      • Its the fridge sound and rainstorm that have mushy compression on my phone SG3.

For looping the fridge sound completely disappears for a couple of seconds at the end of loop. The construction sound is cool, but it dies out at one point just due to whats happening, but this makes a bit stink for a background. Not as bad as the fridge though.

A constant idling big diesel engine sound would be cool if you can add one.

I also noticed unexpected behavior on the intermittent sounds…
I expected the sound to be kicked off at the frequency range, but it is being kicked then stopped - if it is kicked off again during that run time. Could you make it kick then keep going, and if it gets kicked again just ignore until it finishes?…

        • Thanks again for the very specific feedback! I will definitely look into all those sounds you mentioned and see what I can do about it.

You are right about the intermittent sounds. It didn't used to do that. I'm not sure when it started happening but I'll get onto a fix for it soon!

        • +2

Hey, I just found what you were talking about with the fridge! For some reason my audio editing software put an actual gap in there the last time I saved the file. I'll patch it up now.

        • I used your updated version last night, it ran perfectly.

What would be cool is a way to share sounds with others. Maybe even add our own raw tracks.

Not sure how that would fit with your pricing model though.

Speaking of which Id have thought having ads would be better returns, since they would be active on screen all night every night, or are they only active when the screen is on?

  • thanks op, email sent

  • thanks a lot op, email sent

  • I too have harassed you via email :) Thanks! And good luck with your apps! Oops forgot to say, me likey lots! Ah to be on a Swiss balcony……..

    • Thanks :-)

  • sent an email too

  • Is it possable to add longer durations to the sleep Timer ?
    .5hr 1hr 1.5hr 2hr
maybe even allow a manual time to be set.

Otherwise good job and thanks for the freebie.

    • Thanks. :-)

The longest time is 3 hours. Is that not showing up on your phone? Or is it that you want a longer timer than that?

      • each time I tap it, I get 30min till sleep and off.
        I have a cheap LG-P350 phone

        • Whoops, that was meant to be a reply.

That's strange. I can't reproduce it on my phone. So it says "30 min until sleep" on the main screen when you press the alarm icon, even though your settings are set to something higher?

        • Maybe I’m using it wrong :p
Can I set it higher somewhere else?
I press the alarm icon on the main page and it just toggles between 30min and nothing.
it never goes higher than that.

        • +1

Yeah in settings you can change how long the timer lasts. You raise a good point, though. Perhaps it'd be more intuitive to make it changeable on the main screen. I did consider that but decided against it to avoid clutter. I'll have another think about it, though.

        • Oh look, Settings :P
Thats better, I diddn't relise they were there.
          Thanks for your help jazoom.

        • No probs :-)

  • (meant to be a reply)

  • Thanks kindly, received your email.

  • Expire…. still
    +ve from me

  • +3
