Turtle Beach PX5 DD 7.1 Wireless Gaming Headset for PS3/Xbox - $149.95 + Free Shipping (50% RRP)

130

Nearest price I could find was ~$200 so this seems like a pretty sweet deal.
Reviews seem good too if you're not an audiophile.

Regular shipping turned out to be free for me when ordering just these - I'm not sure if regular shipping is ever not free, YMMV.

Amazing headphones. Have had mine for just over a year, highly recommend them.

  • are you able to use them with PC, i know it says ps3/xbox but can ya?

    • Yes, apparently you can after you've set them up correctly:

You need an optical sound output, most pc's dont have this.

This is great for PS3 but not PC. I originally paid $300 for these….

I can't remember the last computer I had without a Optical out??? Even my laptop has an optical out.

Though most of my PC have used high end gaming MB's, but chances are if you are considering these that you would have a decent PC setup anyways.

        • As Wimma mentions if you don't have Optical out you can still connect them to your PC and get Stereo sound using a 3.5mm -> 2x RCA cable.

    • I have the px5's for the PC and use the XP500's for the Xbox360 and PS3.

These work great on both, only complaint is they chew through batteries very easily. But the Eneloops I got work a treat.

Edit: these work fine on the PC, if you don't have Bluetooth built in just get a cheap dongle for >$2 and that will allow you to use your mic.

    • I had to purchase Soundblaster USB to use optical through Dolby Digital Live (DDL). It was the cheapest option. Most soundcards with optical outs are way too expensive and targeted for audiophiles. I'd suggest get the USB soundcards so you can use it on a laptop if you want.

Mind you, however, Soundblaster USB only has 5.1 DDL. But it doesn't matter much too me since I can still get the advantage of virtual surround for listening to enemy footsteps coming behind me.

For some people they prefer true surround headphones. Apparently optical connections dont offer true surround (like what you get with the three jack setup on true surround headphones). I haven't compared this to other true surround headphones but this definitely gives me better surround and sense of direction compared to my 5.1 Zalman headphones. Optical connections only offer compressed digital sounds which people say will be inferior compared to true surround.

You can use bluetooth for the sound but it will be stereo. You should be using optical for the sound but still using bluetooth for mic (just like on PS3).

  • better price then ozgameshop. i have the next level down and the cords give you the shits pretty quick. wish i had these instead

I have had these for a year or so. Pretty good, disappointing bass, it never really has an impact.
    But other wise great.
The dual Bluetooth function is awesome. You can listen to music or take phone calls from your mobile in game without having to remove your headset.
It simply takes over the voice chat channel.

Yeah batteries get eaten quickly, so make sure you have some decent rechargeables.
They also don;t warn when they are low, they just cut out.

    • Yeah the bluetooth hands free is awesome for gaming, normally when you get phonecalls you would have to remove the headset but with these you just press the bluetooth button to answer/end calls. If only I had a bluetooth door intercom :P

  • Awesome headphones. Can game at night without waking up the kids!
No interference from other wireless devices also, which was a relief.
Highly recommend. Should work (audio at least) with any device that can output stereo RCA or optical. The mic is inbuilt, but you configure like a separate bluetooth headset.

  • Great headphones. Awesome price. I've had mine for about a year or so with occasional usage and they're still going strong.

As mentioned before, the seperate bluetooth/gaming inputs is brilliant. I sometimes pump music in from my phone whilst playing games, and the ability to individually control each volume and answer phone calls is great.

Would suggest you get a bunch of AA Eneloops and a charger though. Although the battery life is pretty good on these, they tend to die all of a sudden without warning, and it is nice to have charged batteries ready for replacement.

  • Forgive my ignorance, but how doe these work? Is the box simply a bluetooth base station which accepts audio inputs and sends them via bluetooth to the headphones? Does this mean you don't actually need the base station and could actually use them wirelessly with any bluetooth device?

    • You can use them wirelessly with any Bluetooth device, yes. The headphones have their own Bluetooth receiver, independent of the base station (that uses optical audio in)

I occasionally use mine soley with my computer's Bluetooth, as I have them usually set up on the 360.

However, the sound is much, much, much better through the base station. Through Bluetooth it is rather tinny and low quality. The base station sounds much bassier and richer. Bluetooth is mostly only good for gaming voicechat and answering calls.

    • the headphones can work with bluetooth or the receiver (connected to your PC via optical) but the mic can only work via bluetooth.

  • I didn't pull the trigger on this because of the potential for interference on the 2.4ghz band.. I'll be holding out for an Earforce Tango bargain.. Hard to pass this up though.

    • The potential is there, and I did experience some when I had my old netbook right next to me.
I changed the wireless channel on the router, and the problem went away, there are a lot of similar stories; a simple channel change fixes any issues.

  • Turtle Beach (http://www.turtlebeach.com/product-detail/ps3-headsets/ear-f…) Overview/Summary states "Although optimized for PS3 and Xbox 360 gaming, the Turtle Beach PX5 is also perfect for watching movies …" what they don't say is that PX5 is incompatible with DTS, yet most of my Blu-rays use DTS (with DTS-MA).
However, all Australian digital TV and DVDs do carry DD soundtrack.
