  • Is this a good price?
    Should i buy to try?

    • +1

Not really, it's not compatible with GameCube games and you only have a 3 month guarantee, I think, anyway, it's money better spent on a wii u IMO , though if you have a spare $50 odd…

      • -8

All Wiis are compatible with gamecube games

        • +3

The new Wiis (pictured on the box as lying on their side) do not support GameCube games. That being said, you'd have a tough time finding GCN games nowadays.

I wouldn't expect the image on the EB games website to be accurate of what you get anyway, but here are some comparison images between the two models.

        • These are pre-owned Wii's, I think it will be a gamble for most.

      • -1

Umm.. GameCube games work on the Wii… (the only exception I could see is the 'Family Edition' Wii doesn't). There is an awfully big difference in price between this and the Wii U.

This says otherwise, and the picture ins a flat wii…,

        • All Wii consoles look like that (other versions can lay flat, so not sure why the article makes reference to it).

The picture in the article show Wii box with the words 'Family Edition' on it.. and as per my previous comment this appears to be the only version which doesn't support game cube.

        • Fair enough

        • +1

There are 2 of the standard design wiis, one with the gamecube panel and one without. I have both. The one without came out about Dec 2011, and will be the design that u will usually get new these days. source: I have both. They look identical until u try to open the flap on the side.
If u want GC functionality just make sure the side panel opens, as mentioned earlier its likely these cheap ones will be the older ones anyway.

    • +3

Regardless of compatibility with GC games (and check the box if you're concerned) getting a Wii at this price is a really good buy. They're a great game console particularly for kids, social/party games and family get-togethers. There is a good variety of games, they're usually of very good quality, and the whole thing is hassle free fun. Get one for the kiddies room and one for the man-cave and you won't be sorry.

    • +1

If you've never ever own a Wii before, it is a good deal. Need to try Wii Sports, Just Dance, Zelda Twilight Princess, Zelda Skyward Sword, Let's tap, and New Super Mario Bros Wii.

  • +1

Good price. Doesn't include shipping, but it's only $11.50 to Perth ($9.60 to Sydney)

    • +1

I think you can pick up in store.
Prolly get to pick your color if you do that

      • +1

yeah i picked up preowned consoles before, had no problems

  • +2

Unless I missed it. There is no mention of whether it comes with a controller or not, the picture does show one though.

    • +2

it would be totally stupid if it didn't have a controller haha.

      • +1

Agreed.. but just pointing it out in case it's a gotya… :)

    • It comes with a controller.
      They also have pre-owned Wiimotes+numchucks for $20.

3DS pre owned are $149 iirc too

  • +2

This is a great price, however after owning a Wii for about 3 years now and only playing it for a few weeks, I've realised handheld gaming is the way to go for me. My DS lite is worn down so much now, and was defiantly worth every penny!

    • +6

You meant to say PC gaming is the way to go didn't you? ;)

      • +1

Now that I have some free time and have recently upgraded my computer I will try to get into PC gaming a bit more than I have in the past. What I meant to say in my original comment was that I won't be buying any more consoles like the Wii, PS3, Xbox 360 any time soon.

With that said, I had a go at the Wii U today in store and liked the controls of the huge screen/controller thingy. With that said, I'd rather a 3DS cause it's practically the same thing controls-wise, portable and cheaper.

        • +1

          cool story bro

  • +2

+1 good deal. will buy one (late xmas present) for my nephew in Vietnam

  • +10

+1 good deal. will buy one (early easter present) for myself in Melbourne

  • haha after a few weeks of gumtree trying to get a ps2 for under 50 bucks they drop the price down the week after i get it >.>

  • +3

the remote alone used to cost that much :O

so tempting gonna check it out soon

  • I have the game cube with resident evil, and the very first wii on release, that game works on the wii, unless things have changed.

  • +1

Nothing great about this price when DS regularly sells the wii with mario kart bundle for $99. Mario kart can still be sold for $40+ effectively making the console $59. I don't know why you would want a wii without mario kart anyway. Pay by credit card and it's possible to get a 2 year warranty as opposed to a 3 month warranty.

Also knowing EB sell used and refurbished stock as "new" I'd hate to see the condition of their " refurbished " stock.

    • +2

Anyone care to explain why you wouldn't want a brand new wii with a 2 year warranty for effectively $10 more than this advertised unit?

      • +2

$10 is 20% of the price of what ebgames is selling the wii for, so you're saving technically 20% if you buy from them preowned. And mario kart might not appeal to everybody, they all have different taste in video games, this might be a cheap unit for like the spare room or something, so the more money you can save the better.

      • I just don't think anything you've posted justifies a neg vote, not sure about the other 4

      • +6

I'd prefer the dse deal too. Brand new console, new controller, one year warranty, wii wheel, and mario kart is easily worth $50. My guess would be that this controller doesn't have the built-in motion plus.

      • You dont have to have the Mario Kart game to play it.
Also some old wii's are better than the new ones in some areas like being able to read DVDR discs.

        Both offers are great

  • +10

Ok let me put my money where my mouth is. Dick smith have the black console with mario kart bunde for $99 http://dicksmith.com.au/product/YG4166/wii-console-black-mar…

I have one of these on order to pick up today (Thursday). If anyone (one person only) located near rowville/ mt Waverley wants a brand new wii console ( minus mario kart and the wheel) for $59 please pm me. I will also provide the original receipt. I will sell the mario kart game and wheel to recoup all my money.

    • Try getting one without driving half way across Victoria…

      • I was in Pakenham visiting friends. They must have had about 50 on the floor, in both black and white. They also had heaps and heaps 3DS consoles too.

    • Anyone still after a brand new Wii for $59? No one has taken it from my hands yet.

  • +1

Considering how Wii saves and online works you would have to be pretty insane to buy a refurbished Wii.

The Wii with GC support is worth $50 or so more IMO.

  • +4

Isn't this the price of a pre-owned Wii in pretty much every pawn shop in Australia?

They are $100 brand new with Mario Kart and wheel. Check out the price of Mario Kart with wheel on eBay and you'll realise you are better off buying new and ensuring you get the Motion Plus controller, not the old version. Plus a decent warranty. And it's new - not scratched, dirty, germy, damaged, burnt out or tinkered with.

  • +1

I think its a good price to get a Wii to hack, and you will get free games for life. Wii remote from deal extreme are also pretty.good.

    • -2

but the modchips is cost $110… crazy.

      • +2

soft mod is not hard, there is a risk to it. and $50 is worth a punt in my opinion.

        • thanks i didnt know this, never own one before. definitely will try soft then!

      • There's zero reason to buy hardware for modding a Wii

  • -3

I think I need to "Wii badly" after all that coffee I just drank!

    • That was a wiilly bad joke dude…

  • Deal image shows original Wii controller and nunchuck without motion plus.

See below link for controller differences.
    http://www.nintendo.com/consumer/systems/wii/en_na/images/ac…

Or you will have to spend extras on wii motion plus add-on for the original controller.
    http://dicksmith.com.au/product/YG0308/wii-motionplus

Otherwise spends $10 and get the black Memorex wii motion plus controller that is currently on special at Dick Smith.
    http://dicksmith.com.au/product/YG4105/memorex-black-wii-rem…

As there are a few games that require the wii motion plus controller to play the game or perform all the moves.
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_games_that_support_Wii_…

Also recommend getting the component cable for the WII. Especially if you are planning to use it on a HD screen. It is a vast improvement in picture quality compared to the bundled composite cable. They can be picked up locally for around $6 delivered from ebay.
    http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/HDTV-Component-TV-Cable-AV-GOLD-4…

  • I agree in the $99 vs $49 New is better. But does any of the new wiis out there play gamecube games? Or are they all now family editions?

Eg. the black wii at dick smith is that Gamecube compatible? I cant tell from the website.

Really want a 2nd wii for my room.

    • All new wiis are not BC, but Dick Smith may have the older ones in stock still, i know my local one did.

    • All wiis now are family edition. The Dick Smith one is not Gamecube compatible.

    • No - wont be GC compatible.

I've got a compatible console but never played GC. What are the must have titles?

      Do you need GC controllers?

      • Yes or you can get 3rd party controllers.

Super smash bros melee (better than brawl imo)
Mario Kart double dash (better than mario kart wii imo)
        Mario Tennis
Sonic adventure 2 battle was fun on occasion
        Zelda, metroid, etc.

    • All the horizontal wii consoles are no longer able to play gamecube games. Gamecube support was removed from all newere wii consoles released after late 2011

      http://gaming.stackexchange.com/questions/64788/what-wii-con…

  • Damn, i bought one from EB 2 weeks ago for $68. (yes they are the gamecube compatible ones)

wish they had the same policy as supercheap auto where if you buy something and then it goes on sale, they give you store credit for the difference.

    • I recall some discussion about this a while ago, an employee of EB said they have it in some form, but may be only a week, not Mure. maybe call the store and ask.

      • They said they had no such policy, I was hoping to use the $19 to get 2 of the $9 preowned wii games.

  • Anyone know where to buy an official wii wheel buy itself. Only seem to be average third party ones around.

  • anyone want to buy a near new wii for $50?

I have one sitting around collecting dust

It's practically new - was a corporate gift from the old days

collecting dust, because i have one already

    • Im in if its the old style that supports gamecube.

    • aceboy enable your Pm please im interested too and im in sydney.
i dont care about gamecube but what are the models warranty & accesories included?

  • +3

For anybody that is unsure the Wii console NEVER fails compared to PS3/Xbox360. I've never seen one break unless someones been soldering on it and it can stream media over wifi although not Full HD because it can't render that, also even if it could it can't output over 540p (componenet 6 cables), it can output 576i as well (composite Red, Yellow, White). They are super easy to hack to stream media just jailbreak it with the homebrew channel and put mplayer ce on it. Then edit the smb.conf file to match your smb shares and wala! You have a $50 media streaming device that can also play wii games and back them up off disc. You could download games off the internet but if you own the discs it's easier to just put them in and press backup.

PS don't support piracy and if you need to know anything about jailbreaking or homebrew software go to
    https://sites.google.com/site/completesg/

    • Actually I've seen a disc drive fail once, this happens if you leave the disc inside the console when powering it off when you've finished playing. It stops the ejection process. There is a way to get around this, softmod it and attach a usb powered dvd drive to rip games to USB hard drive :P

    • So wait, are you saying I can turn my tv into a smart one and browse the web and play youtube stuff on it?

    • Im getting one of these just for this purpose. (Media player)
Does it come with composite cables? Im plugging it into a projector. I dont expect HD or anything, its an old projector and my media is all SD anyway, but im not sure if it comes with component or composite.
Also, if its the new version can it still be jailbroken?

      • you have to mod the wii to use it as a media player though..

      • I wouldn't bother using a Wii as a media player. There are much better equally prices options out there right out of the box that will give you more options and be more user friendly for that purpose.

Doesn't even do HDMI without an adapter.

        Cheers.

        • Agree. Using A Wii for a Media player is like using the original xbox 1 as a media player. Sure it was good for the time it was released. But in todays market as stated above there are much better media players you can buy for the same price that are far superior to what the old Wii can do.

  • Rang up a bunch of shops, noone seems to have the gamecube compatible wii new or preowned except EB :(

Anyone know how to get one?

Edit: rang up EB, that 3 months warranty is not good enough for me (after i asked him if they are in good condition h said yeah they should work but have scatches but dont worry they have warranty!) preowned is a bit worrying with only 3 months i think.

    • There web site is confusing. In the product description it says it is the backwards compatible gamecube version. Yet the picture they used definitely shows the later non gamecube version. If its definitely confirmed to be the non gamecube version then they should at least remove that part from the product description.

      • When i bought mine, they had both versions. i had to get the guy to make sure the one he got me was BC.

  • So guys, how exactly do you play gamecube games on the wii? I have old gc discs but I don't know how to insert it into the slot? I'm scared it'll get stuck in there :s

    • You put the disc in, game loads. Press eject, disc comes out.

Just make sure your Wii has GameCube controller ports on it - if it's a newer one without them then you can't play your GC games.

  • i bought 2 units from the last sale @ $48 and i can confirm that… it is a complete lucky dip.
one of the units i received a motion plus controller (win!) but the other controller was a spartan brand (lose). oh and one of the units had a faulty disc drive, so i returned it to the nearest EB who replaced it no questions asked.

condition of the wii console is fairly decent, but had general wear and tear.

    • +2

i hope when you return the bad unit, you put the old controller with it :)

    • I thought they only accepted wii's for trades if they had the genuine nintendo controllers?

      • +1

They probably gave the guy less money stating it wasn't original and then charged standard for the purchaser. Taking a note from "The Professional" obviously.

  • super easy to softmod, win! however, still think the $99 dse deal with mariokart and the wheel could be the better deal.

  • jsut went to have a look at sydney, unit is ok and it was the vertical version so can play GC if anyone want.
controller, the old one. and bit dirty. so i passed. the store advertise as $48
another huget $1 saving for ozb

  • Great system to run RetroArch on…

  • +4

PUBLIC SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENT: PLEASE JUST BUY A NEW CONSOLE FOR $99 with Mario Kart!! (the game alone would cost you $40 best price new/regular price preowned)

    • manufacturers warranty
    • comes with a half decent game
    • is brand new
    • does not come with toe jam, boogers, dirt, crumbs, bacteria (you would hope not for a new product)
    • EB games are annoying

    http://dicksmith.com.au/product/YG4166/wii-console-black-mar…

    • +1

      add:
      * comes with new motion plus built in controller
      * vertical version (newer, but you cant play GameCube games)

      • +1

        add: comes with Wii wheel

      • appreciate the support, but i think vertical is the 'up one' and horizontal is the 'sideways one'

this would be the horizontal one, so the newer one without the gamecube controller ports

    • I would but i need backwards compatibility.

      • Go get from engames i checked one and it was vertical model

        • Man ive seen eb's preowned they are in such bad condition, but if you find a nice one i guess ur lucky.

        • Can u enlighten me of why you prefer old model (just for gamecube games?)
I checked torrents not many gc games available now.. :(

    • Not everyone wants a brand new console. I just picked one up for fun and to mod it. Mine came with the motion plus controller. I don't have any intention to play Mario Kart and I want to play Gamecube games.

  • Just a Side note, Sunshine has a few golden eye bundle controllers original post http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/89402

monster hunter 3 bundle aswell not sure that is reduced they maybe getting rid of wii stock for wii u
