One of the great things about this device is the ability to set a reminder/ notification at a certain time at night to let you know you've accidentally left the garage door open. The other handy feature is that my car's new headunit can control the operation of the garage door via Google Assistant, so you can have the door open for you 100m before you've reached your home. Google can also tell you if your garage door is open or closed (Alexa cannot for some reason, but the Meross app lets you know).

    • +2

Completely agree, it’s saved me a few times!

    • Is that via Android Automotive? Anything special to get it working, or just need to be signed in your google account?

      • +1

Yes via Android Automotive. I think as long as you have linked the Meross action to google via a Pin set in the Meross app it should work. But I also added an assistant action called "Open Garage" so that I can use it as a shortcut button on the headunit as well.

        • ooh that's nice. How did you add the assistant action?

          • +1

@Mudflap: Search android auto in your phone's settings, then click customise launcher > add shortcut to the launcher > add assistant action. Then put "Open Garage" as your assistant action/ command.

            • @Lizard Spock: Is the above instruction is to open the garage automatically when. You are 100m from the house? Does this requires a pin for Android auto? As I normally open the garage door via Google and it requests the pin before it opens?

              • @Benzy: I just used 100m as a example. My above instructions are merely for a shortcut button on my headunit that I can press, but I hardly use it as I just use the command "hey google, open Garage" when I am near the house ~100m or so (and yes it requires a pin to open, but not to close).

You can get really fancy and automate the whole thing with an IFTTT (If this then that) and have the garage door open at a particular location/ distance from the house. The command via IFTTT would be to trigger an open command at a certain GPS location and only if the garage is closed (I have not tried this and I don't know how it would work with the Pin). I actually use IFTTT at home in winter to turn on the A/C heating once the house temperature drops below a certain temperature.

                • @Lizard Spock: Thanks for your reply. I used the same as hey Google and pin. However checking if there is other way.

Thanks for detail response :) 😊

    • I just installed last weekend and it needs PIN to open via Assistant/Google Home. Is there a way around this?

      • No.
Apple Homekit doesn't require a PIN. I think Alexa also doesn't require a PIN.

        • I can confirm that Alexa and Google both require a pin to open only (not for closing). It's a security feature really.

      • You can remove the Google pin. On my iphone :

-> open Meross app, home page
-> look for the tile showing the Garage door you want to change
-> click on the settings icon (top right corner of that tile)
-> Voice control (disable the Google PIN)

Let us know if this works for you

        • If a PIN is not setup, Google responds with a PIN must be setup in order to use the voice command.

2 hour road trip and forget if you closed the garage door,

Just remotely check the security camera that has your garage in view. Too easy.

    • +7

And then what? This actually helps you close the door if you have already left. No need to return home.

      • +25

Just drive back 2 hours and close it? Too easy.

        • +11

          Check before leaving

        • +1

It's not for you but great for others. Thanks for letting us know.

          • @slackme: Yeah, some ppl have too much time to waste talking non-sense. The dude collects negs like JV.

  • Been running the MSG200 3 door version of this for about a year and wish I did so sooner.

Reminders, overtime close (auto close after being open at x mins), auto close on a certain time, and integration with Google (requires a pin) or Homekit (no pin required) is just brilliant.

    • From what I've heard the Wifi range on the 3-door is also improved as well, so it seems like a good option if you're on the edge of range with the single door too.

    • -1

You can remove the Google pin. On my iphone :

-> open Meross app, home page
-> look for the tile showing the Garage door you want to change
-> click on the settings icon (top right corner of that tile)
-> Voice control (disable the Google PIN)

Let us know if this works for you

  • +1

Anyone got a link to the "compatibility list" on their website?
Probably PEBCAK but all I can find on the website is:

For USA and Canada customers, please check the Compatibility Guide on Meross Official Site to find out whether you need an accessory or not. If yes, please send us the learn button color of your garage opener, we can ship the proper accessory to you for free. For other countries, the device is compatible with 99%+ garage door opener models, no accessory needed.

Or should I just hope I'm not a part of the 1% incompatible?

  • I want to set one of these up and have it show up on wireless apple carplay but I don't have homekit. Can I get away with just buying the non homekit version?

    • +2

Not if you want it to show up on Carplay. You need a Homekit hub for that. Best way to do that is to get a cheap HomePod Mini off marketplace and that will do it for you.

    • +1

      No.

But if you are happy with using a voice command instead of it showing up as a button in CarPlay, then yes, it's possible.

    • Does wireless carplay make any difference? I don't have a homekit hub and use wired carplay. It does show the button when I'm home.

      • +1

You need a HomeKit hub for the button to show when you’re away (HomePod Mini, Apple TV)

    • Without homekit hub it only works if you are connected to the same wifi network.
But even when connected to the same wifi, it was not working very reliably for me, until I added a homekit hub (apple tv in my case).

  • +1

Been trying to get this going with a Centsys D5-Evo sliding gate using a step down (DC to USB) converter, but so far no success.

Works fine on the terminals and opens/closes when testing with an extension lead (also on the supported products list), but no power out to the front gate so having to get creative to power this device direct from the battery.

Does anyone have any experience making this work? Or any other alternatives?

    • Also keen to understand

  • Oh cool. Great timing as I'm looking get away from having to use MyQ's app (+ convert my second garage door to being smart).

I was also checking out the Tailwind iQ3 as well - https://gotailwind.com/

  • +1

You can also set this bad boy up to work with geofencing too so it opens when you get home and closes when you leave

  • FYI I wanted to share this for the true Ozbargainers

It's possible to build a cheaper garage door opener, but requires a bit more skill in tinkering and accepting a less aesthetic user interface.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Lvs9Xr-SmIQ

  • Does this come with the garage door sensor ?

    • +1

You mean the reed switch? Then yes it does

    • Yes, you get 3 for the 3 door model (MSG200).

    • Yes, it has a Reed switch to confirm whether the door is open or closed. Very easy to setup.

  • I’ve got this and it worked fantastically for bit, but I ran into issues with it interfering with my cars central locking when parked in front of the garage door making me unable to lock/unlock the car unless I was right next to the cars receiver - confirmed with another car and had the same issue.

I did so much research and couldn’t find anything regarding signal interference or anything and idk if it’s just coincidence or completely isolated incident but the central locking works fine when I park it on the street (roughly 10m from garage door). Tested with and without the device connected and seemed to work completely fine when I remove this device completely.

If anyone’s had similar experience and can shed some light as to why it interferes with my car that’d be great because I’d love to hook it back up.

    • +1

I can't say how to fix this but can confirm I get the same issue at work. There is a remote garage door near our carpark and quite a few people complain of this issue.

    • I feel your pain! Have you tried the official meross instructions for this? They have a guide on this that might help with your interference - https://www.meross.com/en-gc/FAQ/215.html

Otherwise you could try partially wrapping the meross unit in aluminium foil which can act as a faraday cage for other RFID noise. You can also try reaching out to support as well, I'm sure this isn't a novel problem for them. Support has been amazing in my experience.

  • Had these set up on my garage doors for awhile. Works well except notifications to phone are usually delayed. Think it could be the phone/app sleeping as when I wake my phone the notifications come through straight away, even after door has been used half hour prior.

    • Check your wifi setup at home.

I had connection and notification stability issues for Meross, and other smart devices, and found out it was due to my home wifi reaching ~30 connected devices. Once I built a mesh setup and it managed connected devices better, Meross runs like a dream, no more instability issues and notifications are instant, same goes for my smart plugs.

      https://www.tomsguide.com/home/smart-home/your-smart-home-de…

      • Thanks for the information. I'll check that out. Currently run Mercusys mesh set up and connected devices rarely reach 30 devices with my main devices (TV, Shield, XBSX) connected via Ethernet.

  • Does this have Matter support?

    • +1

Just Homekit and Google Cloud, seperate support so not Matter (yet).

  • This is amazing, been using for some time now and its been great.

Asking seasoned OzBargainers - The button on apple car play, does not work (status not updated unless in wifi range). How to open the door when you are almost about to reach, say 100m away.

I have not setup a home pod mini but integrated to Alexa and Google Home. Will,by buying and setting up a HomePod mini I would be able to open the garage door from 100 m away using a voice command ? Now co passengers opens through Meross app when we are a street away

    • That usually means you don’t have a HomeKit hub to act as a bridge when you’re away from home.

A HomePod mini will work as that. You can also block the HomePod from allowing voice commands for the garage door.

    • Sounds like you have an iPhone.

If you want to avoid buying a HomePod or Apple TV, create a Shortcut that opens the garage, select Meross Switch action, select your garage door, and toggle the step to On. Give it a meaningful name, e.g. "Open the garage", as this will be the identifier when using a voice command.

Repeat the above steps in a second shortcut to close the garage but toggle Off and name the shortcut "Close the garage".

When in your car, wherever you are, simply recite "Hey Siri, open the garage.", and this will trigger the shortcut. Ditto for "Hey siri, close the garage."

However, if you want a button in CarPlay, then you'll have to buy a HomePod or Apple TV.

      • Wow. This should do. I am more about opening by voice then by the button it self.

But this would require the iPhone screen to be unlocked for which I’ll have to hold up the iPhone. Is there any way to navigate around this?

        • Nope, it doesn't require the iPhone screen to be unlocked.

Mine is always locked and in my pocket when driving and Shortcuts still work fine, along with all the other Apple/Siri commands and actions.

          • @pogichinoy: Interesting, for me apple requires the iphone to be unlocked. Usually not an issue for me in the car since the phone is used for navigation.

            • @DmytroP: Strange. Perhaps it's a requirement with your car manufacturer and not with CarPlay?

If my iPhone has been pre-synced to CarPlay on our Toyotas and BMWs, I've never had to unlock my iPhone to reconnect to CarPlay. I just hop in and go about my day if using wireless CarPlay, or plug in my iPhone if it's wired CarPlay.

              • @pogichinoy: I don't have car play, using phone directly in the holder with the apple maps app.
It make sense you don't need to unlock the phone if it's already connected to carplay.

          • @pogichinoy: I have tried when connected to carplay yet. Just setup and tried from my phone and it asked for unlocking. Will try when connected to my wired car play. Should work like any other Siri command

            • @BamOz: Did you make sure to select Meross as the action app? If you use Home/HomeKit, you will be prompted to unlock your iPhone. If using Meross, you will not be prompted to unlock your iPhone.

I used this all the time until I setup an Apple HomePod Mini at home.

              • @pogichinoy: Setup and tried. When not in wifi range, it says should be on the same network or enable remote access from home app.

Also, the door opened when in wifi range but when asked to close after exit, said ‘ Not responding ‘

So little unstable at the moment

                • @BamOz: You've mentioned the Home app. That means it was not setup correctly. You need to set it up using the Shortcuts app and reference the Meross app.

In Shortcuts, create the action by selecting the Meross app from the Actions search list.

"Not responding" is a network issue I'm afraid.

                  • @pogichinoy: No, I used shortcuts.

Went to shortcuts app > tapped + > searched for Meross > Selected Switch

Under that tapped device > variables > ask each time and then toggled ON

                    Named this as open garage

                    Repeated above for Close garage

                    • @BamOz: The “Not responding” error is wifi network related. I had issues and my Meross devices kept dropping out and go offline. It was due to reach 30 devices in my wifi network.

Once I setup a mesh system, it manages the devices better as I reached over 40 in the household.

    • Would non-homekit version be able to this?

      • Yes if you use Google Cloud, but it's all up to what you setup. You can run it just through the Meross app without voice if that's something you're concerned about. Google Home usually requires a pin for voice commands to security devices.

  • How can I figure out why my Tuya smart garage door opener occasionally activates in the middle of the night? Could it be hacked, or is it just malfunctioning? If it's a fault, why does it only happen in the early morning hours? The garage temperature ranges from the high teens to low 20s (°C). Is there a way to check logs to find out what triggered it? It's good to link to our echos/google to be alerted if door was opened/closed.

  • +1

    it works great!

  • After working well for 3 weeks mine is now playing up.

    • What's the issue?

      • When I tell it to open, Alexa says it's open but nothing happens. If I then tell it to close it opens.

        • Is the open/close status correct in the Meross app when this happens?

          • @JSONBourne: No it's always says it open. I just told it a 2nd time to close and it did but the Meross app remains open

            • +1

@discountguy: Sounds like your reed switch is misaligned or isn’t contacting properly. That’s how it knows it’s closed. Maybe checked that the magnets are correctly lining up and showing closed. It can take a bit of trial and error to ensure it’s 100%.

    • Can you open the door with Alexa voice command without a pin number?

  • +1

    Great device.
Was amazing when I could use my iPad as a home hub.

Still waiting for a cheap Apple TV deal, so I don’t have to get a home hub

    • HomePod Mini off Facebook Marketplace is a great cheap way to build a hub. You can then use Siri for other stuff too which is handy. I have mine in the kitchen, handy for adding to the shopping list or starting timers.

      • $100 from marketplace it seems. Will investigate.

We are already using google pods/minis etc for most of our smart devices

        • Keep searching and haggle. I picked up a HomePod Mini for $69 at a pawnshop.

I'm waiting for a new Apple TV model to be released, if any. Hah

          • @pogichinoy: Yeah I’m waiting for a new one or a good deal. Missed the $169 one a while back

    • Yeah, this got me excited for a second Set up iPad as a home hub, until I saw…

iPad is not supported as a home hub on the latest version of Apple Home

I've been on the hunt since this morning on FB Market to find a cheapo HomePod Mini… I saw a few at ~$80 but not going to bite.

For now, I'll just continue to use the Meross app on my Apple Watch as I'm 100m down the road. So far, so good.

      • I did this for at least 1-2 years. They removed it last year at some stage!

        • So frustrating! It was such a great option when you had a spare iPad. I think some people got annoyed at automations when the iPad ran out of battery, so perhaps that is why.

  • I bought this and couldn't figure it out. I believe I have a pillar in my ceiling which is blocking access to the pins of the motor.

  • Are these open/close only or can you set them to open to a certain amount?

    • Open/close only I'm afraid.

      • That's what I thought. Thanks

    • It simulates a button press, so just open/close

  • Had mine installed for two years, pretty reliable (had to power cycle twice) and one less thing to carry around!

  • It works well overall, but I’m having an issue with the shortcut on Android. The door status update is always delayed — I have to open the app to confirm whether the door is actually open or closed.
Does anyone have any suggestions for fixing this with Android shortcuts?

    • Sounds like it could be an App sleep problem on Android, perhaps relax permissions and give the Meross app exclusion privileges from app sleep.

  • -3

Yeah but no. Do you want your car and bikes been stolen. Scanning, scanning found! Ah the open remotely works.
Was a fan of home automation. Until I wasn't.
