Be ware Scoopon! Never ever buying anything from Scoopon, they try to mislead you to buy something & refuse to refund!!

I browsed scoopon website before Christmas and found that they have a special on "Port Stephens Coastal Escape for a Couple or Family! Stay in a 1 or 2 Bedroom Unit for 2, 3 or 4 Nights - Packages Start from $179!" I followed the highlight and there is link to ask me to check the room availability, I checked and found there are rooms available on 23, 24 Dec 2012, then I booked two vouchers (one for my family, one for my neighbor)quickly in case they run out of rooms.

Once I purchased vouchers, I tried to book hotel but found the Christmas time are black out!! I soon found I made the wrong bookings in just a few minutes after purchasing! The first thing I am doing after purchasing is trying to contact scoopon, but there is no phone number I can ring, no email address I can send to, finally I found the contact form, I then explained to scoopon that both my neighbor and my kids can not make other days and hope they can refund my money. After four days scoopon replied me and said there is not possible to refund me. Then I explained to them my difficulty (I only have this period of time to go out with kids), then they replied me that I only can get 50% money back!

I did online shopping many years and never see such a unsympathetic company! Yes! they did put blackout date in fine print which is hidden on second tab, but did not highlight it!

They put such a special deal only a few days before Christmas, many people assume this is for Christmas! Follow the highlight people will easily find rooms available before Christmas. They are completely misleading customers!

I had a very bad experience on this Christmas due to this matter, I am still trying and not giving up for this refund matter.

Just let everyone know, think thrice if anyone wants to buy anything from scoopon. Scoopon only think about their profit and never care about any customers' difficulty.

  • Hate to say but it was your fault nevertheless, because they are not doing anything against what was written on the listing.. so it was understandable that they wouldn't want to refund you 100%.

Not that I am supporting Scoopon either because I never actually buy anything from them.

Anyway, sorry to hear.. but your option unfortunately would either be re-sell the voucher to someone else (if that is possible) or take the 50% refund.

  • Is this is the link?. (EDIT: Changed link to Dec deal) The Christmas blackout period is the second line down. The hotel appears to charge surcharges in the Christmas peak times. You probably could have called them up to see what possible surcharge you could pay to stay there.

I believe retailers by law (in Victoria anyway) must offer a refund if there is a fault or problem with the product. They do not have to refund you for a change of mind, which for all intensive purpose is what this is.

Many hotel booking sites have the same policies. Look at Wotif. If you had booked with them as well, you would be out of luck with a refund

Cancellations or changes to bookings for this room will not be permitted for any reason. Once confirmed a booking cannot be refunded or altered in any way.

Scoopon don't have to refund you. As above, your best bet is to sell it on eBay.

    • They do not have to refund you for a change of mind,
which for all intensive purpose is what this is.

You mean "which for all intents and purposes".

      And this person is correct.
You should accept the 50% return and be happy with that.

      • You mean "which for all intents and purposes".

I actually meant the former but upon looking it up, it appears to be a incorrect phrase/eggcorn that's continually used today. Oh well, learned something new. Thanks.

You should accept the 50% return

I reckon you can get more by selling it. Looking on eBay, the savvy sellers never mention Scoopon or the price they bought it for in their listing.

        • I can not recall "intensive purposes" being written anywhere, I'm surprised it is apparently so commonly used. I have only ever used intents and purposes. Must be a generational thing.

        • I can't recall ever using that phrase in writing, only ever used in verbal conversations. Don't think it's a generational thing. It's more than likely I've heard it said on television many times throughout my life (probably Law and Order). When I was younger, I thought it was "take it for granite" as in the rock and not "take it for granted".

Wonder what happened to the OP? 1 post wonder and not logged in since.

        • yeah I think these things come from mishearing it the first time and simply assumed hearding there after.

But until the last year I've seen a few people use the phrase "intesive purposes". Never heard it previously.

It's like how I'm often seeing people write the word 'payed' rather than 'paid'. Technically it is a correct way of spelling it but it's very old school and either it's a generational thing bringing it back or it's simply a lack of education and not done on purpose.

        • I vote for lack of education and not done on purpose. Payed that is.

If i buy anything from one of those group buying sites (which isn't often) i read ONLY the fine print, not the "Deal Highlights" section. Just something to note for future.

  • I had a similar issue with scoopon. In my case they linked to an availability calendar that showed good availability in the school holidays, then when you purchased the coupon you got a different set of availability dates.
I felt that was pretty misleading, so I requested a refund with the response you have encountered.
I made a complaint to NSW fair trading that the initial advertisement was misleading, and as soon as I got a complaint number Scoopon offered a refund.
In your case it is pretty clear there is a blackout on the dates you want, so I guess you need to read a little more carefully.
In any case, most of the other deal sites offer a 7 day refund policy if you can't get the dates you want - there is no reason to use Scoopon in future.

  • they are misleading. i nought car service voucher which says major car service with oil and filter change. but whn i went for service they said major service requires more parts to be changed so it will be service only with oil and filter change.

najority of GB sites are same.

I see that scoopon guys spend more time on Oz bargain website to reply queries than their own website.

I got a reply that "as our system works on an oldest to newest format, if you update your email, or send multiple emails, this will update your request and put you at the back of the queue"

In short this means that I should not trouble them and keep waiting ages for their replies. This also means to me that they have more number of bad customers than good ones.

It is true that they mislead people. They can solve this issue by giving product/service purchase examples but they dont want to.

I dont know how ATO granted them ABN without having a phone umber and fax number. This is very unusual.

    • They have one they just don't advertise what they are.
