Optus Throttling FTTP Speeds? Not Getting The Service as Advertised

Not sure if im just gonna cop flack for this, but have tried some reddit forums and not much information.

Basically I have FTTP, and I was on the optus super fast plan (250Mbps down, 25Mbps up). end of feb I upgraded to the ultrafast plan (1000Mbps down, 50Mbps up)

Now, realistically for most part I am seeing around 970Mbps down and 46Mbps Up. However for the last 2 weeks at 2pm Every day until 4am I am reaching Max 244Mbps Down and 44Mbps up.

I have had NBN replacement, Optus modem replacement.

Some more information. I am very enthusiastic about home networking, I run a full homelab and have speed tests that run every hour to constantly track speeds.

My network (in house) is full gigabit and have no other issues

So, is optus throttling me at 2pm every day? I would understand some throttling (even then I paid to get FTTP so I would not be sharing curb network with neighbouring houses). I have messaged multiple times and contacted tech service from optus, and my case just 'keeps getting escalated'. Am I being throttled to speeds less than what I am paying for? as these speeds match the speed pack down one from what im paying for

Definitely not school holidays. Can publish my months worth of speed tests where they are run hourly on my speed container. T happens during school terms as well

Certain ISPs (Aussie, Leaptel and some others) provide these network utilization charts that show you if your POI (point of interconnect) has spare capacity or is maxxed out (assuming they are telling the truth which admittedly is still "trust me bro")

I personally like to stick with networks that publish these daily charts for peace of mind.

It might be your POI CVC is maxxed out with Optus and everyone is being limited.

Dump Optus and move to someone else - Buddy Telco (Aussie BB), Launtel or Leaptel to name a few.

Why are you using the Optus router? Don't you use your own router?

    • -3

I use my own switch and router, but still gotta pass through the optus modem first

      • +3

You can plugin your router to the nbn NTD box. You only need the Optus router if you use Optus 4G auto failover and Optus VoIP.

        • I do utilise the 4G failover when things drop completely as I run my email server at home

        What? Why?

  • 244Mbps sounds like the upper limits of 2.4Ghz wifi, if you are testing from a wifi device.

    • +1

Nope. Cat6e plugged directly into the modem

  • +4

    leave optus

    upgrade router

    ??

    profit

  • Optus run their PoI's pretty close to max for $$ reasons :/

I am betting school holidays has put more load on your local PoI and all Optus customers on that PoI are having the same issues …

There is a difference between RSPs, and contention ratios, loads and response to loads are all in the mix ;)

    • -2

def not school holidays. spreadsheet has been tracking since beginning of march

      • Still doesn't discount contention ratios and general congestion ;)

Most decent RSPs will increase their backhaul to congested PoI's, but I am guessing Optus is not one of them :P

Change RSP or get a separate one on the same box to compare too …

Why would you use the crappy Optus supplied router, or their service at all.

    • -2

I use my own network switches and wifi access points, but its run through optus modem

      • +3

        FTTP doesn't need a modem, it's a router.

        • he is probably using his old modem router in router mode.

Honestly it doesnt matter, Leave Optus. it's easier to leave than to troubleshoot.

Heres my speeds right now at 6:25PM Aussie Broadband.

  • So, is optus throttling me at 2pm every day?

It would seem so, especially if it happens consistently. But as internet plans have been advertised as "up to" for a long time, just change provider.

Why do you need it super fast anyway

    • +1

      Decadent opulent capitalist
Need to consoom content as rapidly as possible

    • +1

Cause he is paying for it!

    • +6

Firstly, because I’m paying for it.

Secondly, house of 6 adults, all streaming (compressed) 4K content at the same time

Aside from that, gaming, and I am interested in all things tech and homelabbing so being able to download ISO’s fast enables me to

      • 6 adults? Wtf

        • +3

          2 Parents and maybe 4 adult/teenage kids?

          • +3

@geekcohen: Yup, we have 3 kidults with occasional 4th and 5th sleeping over. Our house looks like a car park at times
            .

@Nugs: ^ exactly this. Lucky enough to still be at home in late 20s whilst me and my partner save everything we can for a house.

              Siblings + partners + parents.

We all utilise stremio + Arrs system among other services so playing 4K content through real debrid at a decent 30Mbps per person

      • you do realise … 6x 4K streams == roughly 150 Mbps !!!

but then as you said - you are tech savvy (run a homelab/speed-tests/etc) … so you already knew that.

so bandwidth/plan isn't main factor as to your issues.
so many ppl these days are swayed by the marketing of ISP's/RSP's … and buying plans they never fully utilise.

As others have said … most probably due to POI/CVC issues locally to you in your area.

        • Wasn’t swayed by Optus, have just been with them for a very long time, and never had an issue until now. I also use our homelab as primary work backup NAS, so files constantly being put through the network using a 3-2-1 backup system

          • @blakeclayton12: so …

what are your minimum REQ's ???
up/down + latency to certain servers (will need to specify exactly which servers - as you mentioned possible gaming).

then … what POI/CVC you are conected to.
            lastly == which RSP.

for someone who is "knowledgeable in networking" … you seem to be stalling / making others do the legwork for you.
            Just saying.

            • @simplystu: My minimum requirements aren’t the issue here. I didn’t ask for a breakdown of the best internet in Australia. I specifically raised a question about speed throttling. Trying to take shots because I mentioned I’m confident with networking doesn’t make your point any stronger, it just makes you look petty.

If you’re going to jump in and try to correct someone without understanding the full context, expect to be corrected in return.

              To clarify:

              POI: Asquith (2ASH-60)

CVC: Currently undisclosed. Optus doesn’t publish this data, but I’ve already escalated the matter to their technical manager.

RSP: Optus. They’re a Tier 1 provide. meaning they manage their own national backbone and connect directly to NBN POIs, with no reliance on upstream resellers.

If you’ve got something useful to say about actual CVC congestion or throttling, I’m all ears. Otherwise, maybe sit this one out.

Damn, and I remember growing up where we'd all gather in the lounge to spend time and watch something together. Can't help but feel we've lost something with everyone watching things separately.

        • +1

          Also …
Kids these days … Going for sleepovers, but watching a completely different 4K stream as to everyone else.
