St.George Vertigo Credit Card: Get 10% Back (Up to $500 Back) on Spend at Selected Supermarkets and Service Stations - Any Good?

Looking at this credit card which I can get for a $0 sign up since I am a member of St.George.

Has anyone had a good experience with this deal in the past? They mention exclusions for places you can use the card for the 10% cashback but only mention a couple of places like Costco in the terms and conditions….

    St George Vertigo Credit Card

This topic made my head spin…

  • Spending $5,000 to get $500 cashback is a rather poor deal. I'm sure you could do better.

    • I don't see any mention of a minimum spend of $5000 on that page….

      • The number is not specifically stated, but it's 10% cashback on various purchases, up to $500 in cashback. Hence, to achieve the full $500 in cashback you'd need to spend $5000 at least.

        • I'm fine with that, the card is free for a year so I'm effectively getting 10% off every shop I do.

    • Best I can do on GCs for Colesworth is 5% on the reg, the family has gotta eat. Also keep in mind Coles group don't take gift cards online.

Where would you want to look for more than 10% at Colesworth?

      • You can get credit cards where you'll get more than $500 worth of bonus and don't have to spend anywhere near $5k to get it. You can also spend the money anywhere, including buying discounted giftcards from anywhere that sells them.

        • Yes but those deals require like $3k minimum spend in 3 months, this you can just use at any time throughout the year for 10% off your purchases. I've churned through all the other good credit card deals. The card is free if you are already a member.

  • OP, the answer you seek is the MCC.

Costco is specifically excluded as, according to the wiki it is a wholesale club, not a supermarket.

If you were to look at the MCC restrictions of the supermarket gift cards Shopback used to do, and the MCC restrictions on the fuel and auto card that Cashrewards does - that will be your answer

If I can use the card in store at all the Coles and Woolies then that would be fine as a deal for me.

        Me too, thanks for posting!

p.s. it would work for gift cards too

I don't understand why more people aren't jumping on this deal…. Maybe I am missing something… But as you said I can only get like 4-5% off my shop at Coles and Woolies so this seems like a no brainer to me.

@tabboy: I've signed up too with the $0 annual fee, will be good to use for discounted gift card offers at Coles/Wool especially, but also everyday shopping at ALDI, fruit and veg etc.

            Thanks for the post.

        • @OZBMate8911 It says gift cards are excluded in the conditions

"Spend Exclusions: Gift card or eGift card purchases at participating supermarkets are not counted as part of eligible spend. Eligible spend also excludes fees, cash, cash-equivalent transactions, third party payments such as AfterPay, BPAY, PayPal or PayPal equivalent."

@tabboy: The bank won't know what you purchased from the retailer.

            • @hamza23: Hmm true…. I'm only using it for groceries anyway. Just got approved for one.

            @tabboy:

Gift card or eGift card purchases

This is referring to online gift card portals. In store would be fine.

            • @JIMB0: Ah that makes sense. Thanks for the explanation.

  • looks good, do they accept pensioners

    • The list of conditions for approval states this…

"Have a regular, verifiable Australian taxable income for at least 3 months (18 months for self employed)"

Great deal but just be aware if you've held a St George or related bank credit card in the past 24 months you won't get this 10% rebate bonus.

    Check the T&Cs carefully.
