Wahl Colour Pro Home Family Haircutting Kit (Corded Clipper and Mini trimmer) $41 + Delivery ($0 C&C/in-Store) @ JB Hi-Fi

600

Saw this kit was $39 highlighted on the Price Hipster Newsletter - but shaver shop is showing no stock on their website. Took a look online and looks like JB Hi FI is doing it at $41 with potential to use Perks $10 voucher if you have one. TGG is also doing it at $41 -

The stand alone clipper is also available without the mini trimmer at $27

Was hugely popular last time it dipped to $38

I personally have one of these kits. Thought it was a great idea to buzz cut myself recently going for the old school Brad Pitt look..unfortunately I found out the hard way you need to not be ugly for Buzz Cuts to work… :')

    Where are they made?

    • +12

My hair is made on my head.

    • +5

I actually agree with JV here. I had a pair of WAHL hair clippers that lasted over 10 years - really good quality and cut my hair perfectly everytime (not that I have much now!) I moved house and lost the clipper set, sadly. Bought another set thinking they would be the same and wow - I was mistaken!! Found out they are now made in China. Unfortunately, won't ever buy another set by WAHL again.

      • +1

There are still some that are made in the EU (Germany IIRC).

        • +3

Yeah, you would want to make sure you know where the product is made before purchasing. If this set is from China - avoid at all costs!!

      • +5

Found out they are now made in China.

Did the box say "The Great Wahl" ???

    • +2

      Yup, very valid opening question.

Sucks that so many brands make products in different locations with such vastly different quality (hush puppies comes to mind).

Wahl stuff from the US is absolutely fantastic (one of the most highly rated quality and VFM products I own), outside of that, it may as well be anko.

      • yup, My first wahl was a US made one which is still going strong, then several years later I bought a wahl set off ozbargain which was a lot cheaper and i thought wow Wahl has lowered their prices. Man the made in china Wahl products were very ordinary in comparison

        • Yeah the v7000 is better for sure (but $150 vs $40). Worth the extra imo.

          • @G-rig: The old… "Spend more & get something better". Who would have thought!!!

            • @WatchNerd: Exactly mate, better in the long run and less waste. I decided if I had to buy a new blade it wasn't going to be for those cheap ones.

They do a better job too.

  • +6

The made in china Wahl products are just crap honestly.

    • -1

China makes good quality stuff though.

    • Wahl is decent, pretty happy with mine

    • +2

We got the Wahl corded clippers about 10 years ago for about $16. Never missed a beat.

      • Same. Couldnt kill em. Save 1000's over the years not to mention time waiting for a cut..

    • Even so the Wahl colour pro home will last a very long time, can't really go wrong for $30-40, got some in COVID too.

I upgraded to the v7000 (made in USA) and they are noticeably better but $150. I'd recommend spending the extra to start with if you are going to stick with it, still pays for themselves in haircuts.

(Only upgraded as they were dropped and the cost of a new blade was as much as the clipper set).

china Wahl products are just crap

      Not 'great' then?

  • +15

I've been using this since 2020 during covid, after some. Questionable haircuts, 10 youtube videos later…doing my own fade cuts every 2-3 weeks. Save myself $70 a month on 2 cuts.

These clippers have been absolutely ROCK solid.

    • +9

Same. Haven't been to a hairdresser since COVID.

Besides saving money, no small talk and not having a stranger who is often sick breathing all over your face for 20 minutes are other bonuses.

    • +1

$70 a month on haircuts? It's been like 5 months since my last haircut damn. I don't even grow hair that quickly though, and i usually get a skin fade with scissors ontop so its short I suppose. I would love to do my own fades but I don't trust myself lmao

      • +4

At one point I was spending $80/ 5 weeks when I was obsessed with zero fades and getting clean ups every 2.5 weeks or so. Price for zero fade at my barber now is up to $55 .. too ridiculous to maintain.

    • +1

Same, except I started after my local hairdresser started asking $40 for men's basic haircuts

  • +4

$35 on the good guys commercial

Could never go back to a plug in clippers. Not never.

    • +5

Been using plug in for a long time, what am I missing besides a flat battery when you're in a hurry?

      • In fairness the plug ins have more grunt but the convenience of the wireless ones are great. I just found the wire annoying.

        • This. Plus with the wireless ones, you can use them on the cord if you ever run out of battery.

          • @gadgetguy: Just get a cordless trimmer to go with it.

Most cordless clippers will be underpowered (or go though the battery fast) unless you spend a lot. Have a look what the barbers use and check the motor specs/rpm.

      • -1

do you still have a home phone with a cord too? lol

you know when its dead you can plug it in and use it while its charging at the same time.

i recommend lithium powered, it has more balls and most similar to corded clippers.

        • "A cordless phone typically uses between 0.002 to 0.005 kWh per hour when plugged in"
          vs
"a corded hair clipper's usage per hour ranges from approximately 0.01 kWh to 0.1 kWh or higher while it is actively being used."

    • I saw batteries and I thought corded lol

Cost of living making me look at more outlandish options like diy

    • +2

Tell that to hairdressers charging $50 for 10 minutes of work

      • +1

My barber spends about 45 min at $55 for a zero fade, sometimes I kind of wish he would hurry up though.

  • +4

unfortunately I found out the hard way you need to not be ugly for Buzz Cuts to work… :')

awww hugs. We're all ugly in our own way ;)

  • I have two sets of the cordless version - couldn't imagine having to deal with an annoying cord.

Incidentally, the second set (bought a couple of years after the first) was inferior build and quality even though it was in theory the same model.

  • These are awesome, highly recommend.

DIY is easier than you think. Plenty of videos online.

  • +2

I don't agree with all the good reviews here. It's an extremely noisy clipper, and sometimes pulls hair as well. The only reason I use it is for blending between the cuts e.g. between 1 and 2 I use the 1.5 guard. Otherwise even my 5 year old gets scared when I turn it on.

  • I had this kit, did not like it. Bought a wireless babyliss and it's miles better .

    • Yes it's entry level but solid and more than enough for people trying DIY for the first time - it's not for everyone so may be a waste of money spending more.

BaBlyissPRO is great quality and will cost a lot more but recommended (got a foil shaver and skeleton trimmer).

Tried the $5 Xiaomi one once. It did the job. Now I remember where I put it.

    • +1

Also noticed @RichardL bought one. Is it still working & would you recommend?

    • Mustn't be that good if you only used it once?

However, people love Xiaomi & AliExpress.
(got a XIAOMI MIJIA Shaver S700 that goes alright for under $100, anything from Phillips is $250- 600).

      • +1

        @WatchNerd

Actually I lost where I put it after I moved lots of my stuff around. I gifted one to my parents and they have no complaint so far. Since we all have little experiences with this, I can't comment much. It does the basic job well and is easy to get started and is battery. I'd recommend as a start to go. I think It came with Chinese manual that might made it hard for others but not much for me tho.

  • Have this kit, does an ok job, misses some small hairs, scissors is next to useless so I just use the razor for everything. Kid is on his 5th Daddy haircut, it's not as hard as you think and loves it!

  • +2

Love that these have cords, so sick of battery razors and clippers dying and having to by another. Always go corded, they will last!

  • I purchased this last year, from the shaver shop. The main clipper didn't survive a second cut. I bought a more expensive lithium battery clipper as it was cordless, from the same company (Whal) but kept the accessories which works fine.

I guess you get what you pay for.

    • +1

thats no good, should have claimed warranty. $40 is nothing to just shrug about imo.

      • The lady I spoke to at the shaver shop wasn't helpful when asking for a refund. But it is my fault as I couldn't find the receipt for the old shaver. I couldn't be bother requesting a refund under ACL.

I think I eventually found the e receipt somewhere, either in my email or my store account online

Going forward, anything I buy over 50$, I ask the cashie for some sticky tape and I stick the receipt in the box.

Alternatively, I ask for a e-receipt if the store allows it ( Officeworks and JB hi Fi etc).

Flybuys/onepass and everyday rewards stores you receipt too.

        • perhaps better to take photo, keep it in your phone notes app - most receipts i find these days fade very quick.

    • Lol one use doesnt sound right.
Would have taken it back to the shop, defo under warranty.

Maybe do click and collect next Time, card statement etc, take photo of receipt when get home etc.
