OzBargain Email Notifications - Now Quite Delayed?

Hi all,

Not sure if anyone has noticed this, but email notifications now seem to come through quite delayed.

They used to be lightning quick and it was incredible. If you had a search/product that you had subscribed to, you could jump on it early. Now, I get the email and find out it's been around for 30 minutes (what I can see is the average), and it's already been out of stock.

Did something change around 1-2 months ago? I've noticed it is nowhere near as quick, almost as if notifications are batched now rather than triggered.

Comments

  • I've had no issues. I have a watch for the "ozito" keyword and this thread came through pretty quickly.

    I am using Google Workspace/Gmail.

  • Search alerts are always around 10 minutes delay (as well as other deal related subscriptions) to allow adjustments after publishing.

    • Hmmm ok, strange. I subscribe to Bunnings as a store for example, and they often come through 20 or so minutes later. Previously it was instant

This is with a standard Gmail inbox. I've used this feature for years, so it was quite noticeable for me recently when it started happening and I missed some deals.

      • Even the website push notification has a delay of at least 20 minutes.

I have a "Seiko" notification and always get the notification 20 minutes after I saw it from a refresh. It has been that way forever in my experience. It's pretty useless to rely on for real legit bargains. F5 for the win.

From our mail server logs it does appear to have been delayed due to busyness. The Bunnings deal for example

        • Posted at 8:08AM AEST
        • Tried forwarding email from OzBargain to our email server for delivery at 8:18AM (10 minute delay as expected), however that failed with a retry message
        • Tried again at 8:28AM and 8:34AM and finally succeed
        • Outbound email server then made the delivery at 8:39AM after queued for 5 minutes.

We have a lot of out-bound emails to deliver in the morning due to daily newsletter (close to 200k) so it's possible that email server was complaining and asking for "retry" (hence the 16 minutes delay between ozbargain and our email server). I'll look at some mitigations today, but no guarantee a solution.
