Need Help with Changing nbn Provider and Current Setup

Edit:
Update
Just spoke to TPG and got them to bring the price down as per their price beat gurantee thanks very much for all your help everyone.
Cheers

Hello,

I am currently using a TPG plan ($79.99 (HFC)100/20 (Speed Boost) NBN) without a contract. I have a home phone set up with TPG due to working from home. However, next month, TPG will increase the price of the plan by $5, bringing it to $84.99 and reverting the NBN speed to 50/20. I am considering switching NBN providers but am unsure which one to choose. I am willing to pay between $79 and $84 and want to maintain the NBN speed of 100/20.

My current setup with TPG includes a Huawei HG658 router and a TP-Link Deco M5 Wi-Fi mesh router. I also still use a phone cable to connect my computer/landline phone to the Huawei HG658 router.

As I am not technically proficient, I have some questions:

  1. If I switch providers like ABB, Superloop, or Exetel, how long will the churning process take? Do I need to inform TPG of my intention to exit?
  2. If I terminate my service with TPG and no longer have the Huawei HG658 modem/router, can I use the TP-Link Deco M5 as a main router without purchasing another one? Please note that I will still require a phone connection and may need to run a cable from the router/modem due to work requirements.
  3. If I change providers, how can I ensure that the same Wi-Fi name and password are applied to all connected devices to avoid re-entering this information?
  4. Are there any other factors I should consider before making a switch?
  5. If the current TP Link router can’t be used, does anyone have a recommendation for a new router?

Any assistance with these questions would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you.

Let's me suggest you something, you don't need to stick with any nbn providers just for the landline or the landline number, use crazytel with $1/month and divert it your mobile and after 3 ringtones, can be added to other mobile numbers (misses/wife). Check on them if you can keep your landline number.
    1. For me without the phone line, you just need to put the intention start date with other providers and process is seamlessly without noticing any downtime
    2. Like suggestions above, when you separate the landline number, deco can be used and can get rid of the Huawei
    3. SSID will remain same on Deco
    4. You might need a slight change on the config as your deco WAN is now connected directly with the hfc
    5. You're choosing the deco so you might not be a heavy user but more than home biz owner or wfh, i presume, so it's more than enough

    • Cheers mate! Just wanted to ask if the Crazytel works like a landline. Since partner will be working from home, I need a constant telephony connection

  • TPG require 30 days notice that you wish to cancel. If you don't give 30 days they will charge you for the month. It's clearly stated on their website.

    • Even though i am not locked in a contract ?

      • You would have a service agreement, even if its not ongoing. Do they charge you for the month in advance? If so you would need to time your exit so that its near the end of your billing period, because they aren't going to give you a pro-rata refund.

      • Even though i am not locked in a contract ?

Why would I write it if it wasn't correct? Maybe you could fact check my comment using google.

My source: Ex-TPG non-contract customer and it's on their website.

NB: their customer retention team will try and sweet talk you into staying. If you know the deal you are going to then you can use that to get them to give you a few free months or a monthly discount.

    1. Normally less than 1 hour for nbn however if you port your current home phone number to the new ISP it can take up to two weeks.
    2. Yeah you can plug in the TP-Link Deco M5 router to the nbn HFC NTD box. You most likely have to purchase a VoIP adapter or IP phone handset that plugs into the TP-Link Deco. You don't need a VoIP adapter or IP phone handset if you divert the calls to your mobile.
    3. Your Wi-Fi name and password remains the same when you change ISPs.
    4. Open the TP-Link Deco app and update the internet type to Dynamic IP for Exetel, Superloop and Aussie BB.

Cheers mate that really helpful, any recommendations for a NBN Plan based in Brisbane QLD ?

      • Leaptel or Aussie BB if you want nbn and phone with the one provider. Personally I would keep nbn and phone separated so you can easily swap ISPs for the nbn deals.

Leaptel, Exetel, Superloop or Aussie BB, Buddy Telco (Aussie BB but cheaper) for nbn and Crazytel or Siptalk for the phone.

Is it worth calling TPG, mention you have found other cheaper options (they mention a price beat guarantee on their website) & see what they can do for the 100/20 plan?
It could save a whole lot of hassle & possible downtime while trying to make it work.

    • I think this may be applicable to the new connection but can give it a go , cheers

      • Not directly related, but I told Origin I would leave unless they could match another offer for electricity. They came nowhere near it with their 'special offer valid for x days', so I signed up with another company. With the switchover, Origin phone and offered a better sweetener. When I said, "but you old me the last offer was the best you could do", the guy on the phone said, "that's another department". In other words, chase another offer after haggling and hold off making a final decision until they phone you to confirm you want to change.

What did I do? I told Origin they should support loyal customers and they could stick their offer.

Word of warning: the last time I ended a TPG contract, they had a wall of Customer Relationship specialists I needed to get past. "I'll pass you to someone else". They can be frustrating if they think you are ending an account.

        @Sunnyoz
Put in your 30 days notice so the customer retention team calls you and begs. Use one of the NBN deals on OzBargain or WhistleOut or Whirlpool as leverage. eg: Spintel 100/20 $65/month

        • Thanks bud will give it a go, cheers

I received the same tpg hike email last month and called them with comparable offer and asked to match they matched not exactly but was able to negotiate it down 20 dollars per month ..so worth asking them. Otherwise just change provider.
