Just spotted this up for preorder—Mario Kart World for $109 + free shipping. I’ve been keeping an eye out and I believe this is one of the cheapest preorders going around at the moment. Also great to support a smaller business.

For change, this is cheaper than RRP

      • What?!

What is RRP going to be for Switch 2 games?

        • $120 lols…

          • @squaredonut: Seems more like $104 and $114 is the exception. PS5 games on the other hand seem to be $109 and $119
            Source: JB Hi-Fi prices

        • Don't worry, they don't have heaps game titles for you to purchase.
Mario Kart World can play until next gen machine come out (another 10 years?) lol

    • +4

      and with free shipping

    • As above. Not the cheapest

  • +20

Big W + Everyday Rewards perk makes it $98.10

    • +5

      plus discounted gift cards.

    • +1

Thanks, tried the code on the first day and it didn't work.

      • I think the code excludes all Nintendo products now

    • I can’t tell if that’s a bargain or not.

      • -1

        That's about 60USD.

All the americans are currently complaining about 90USD games, so it's all relative I suppose.

        • Said Americans are also complaining over a $90 game that doesn't exist. It was always $79.99 USD and they somehow misinterpreted a price sheet for Europe that clearly said €89.99

  • +21

As keen as I am for the Switch 2 and Mario Kart World, I can't justify these prices. Will probably wait in a few years time and pick up a console with some games cheaper on marketplace.

    • 💯

    • +2

If the switch is any indication - the prices hardly get discounted :(

      • +1

Brand new. you're correct. But 2nd hand will always be discounted, usually by half.

I remember BotW launch prices didn't change much for a very long time, but I remember I managed to get BotW 2nd hand along with Super Mario Odyssey both for $100 on Marketplace.

        • Last month a seller on marketplace insited he can sell his 2nd hand switch lcd for $300 because "brand new in the shop" is $399

          • @McMaferMur: What seller had it on for vs what they got is a different matter

        • They've each been ~$50 new in the past, but rarely and only briefly, price beat at officeworks for even cheaper.
I think the seller did fairly well out of that deal.

      • +1

ToTK was $53 the other week
        https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/898396

I snagged that gambling on the Switch 2 having an upgrade to an enhanced version; which turns out was a winning bet :D

    • +2

Yep likewise. People really need to speak with their wallet if they expect change. But we have already seen that people don't mind paying the new exorbitant pricing for Gpus etc.

    • +1

Glad you said marketplace because this game will go on sale for about $9 off in 5 or so years. :)

    • +4

Depends how you look at it.

You could pay $20-30 for a movie ticket and watch Snow White for a couple of hours or you can spend $109 and play hundreds of hours of fun

      • +2

People don’t understand that the entertainment per $ for gaming is incredible. They need to actually put their money where their mouth is.

      • +1

Sure, but there's no reason why someone must enjoy it now. It's also perfectly valid to enjoy it in 2 years' time at potentially half the cost.

        • There isnt and its not like Nintendo is holding a gun to your head.

I can think of way more expensive things people are happy to pay for but not complain about it.

I didnt get my first Switch until a couple of years later it was released or play Mario Kart 8 until 2020.

    • +1

It is a bit expensive but really the hardware is pretty adequately priced for what it offers. We are also getting probably one of the best deals on it in the world especially compared to USA and EU right now.

  • -1

Or just don't get it until end of the year and they have sales or listen to the worldwide feedback people ranting "drop the price"

    • +4

Any other company would buckle in and drop the price if they had this much complaints.

But this is Nintendo were talking about.

      • Zero companies would actually do that, companies that operate in reality don't make knee jerk reactions to Internet spam.

    • +4

Someone think of our fellow gamers over in the States - Nintendo has just suspended pre-orders in the USA and are re-assessing pricing due to the new tariff, which applies to China and Vietnam where the console is being manufactured.

The price will most likely be increasing for Americans: for the first time in history, they might actually be paying more than us for a new console and games! Thanks Trump! /s

      • +1

        I think it's time I start selling 5090s to U.S

    • +1

Vocal minority as always on the internet. Retailers are noting record preorders atm. Nintendo is losing no sleep over the “drop the price” spam.

  • +1

If the PS and Xbox pricing (and past Switch trends) are anything to go by, I sort of expect physical games to launch at $99 commonly at the usual places like Big W, Amazon and possibly JB and then increase back to $109/119 in the following weeks.

  • Ill just wait for nintendo to drop the price on this one…

    • Can you play switch as a skeleton?

      • Yes.

      • -2

Yes, you are already a skeleton….

  • +1

    Don’t see a discount here.

  • +6

Won't pay over $80 personally. Not getting the Switch 2 until we have release dates for the next Zelda and Mario anyway.

Will Nintendo do the 2 game eshop voucher for Switch 2?

  • +3

Anyone have any idea why Amazon hasn’t got pre orders?

    • +1

I have been waiting for the same thing as they don't charge till it's shipped. The only listing they have at the moment is Cyberpunk.

    • +2

I think it's because of the tariff situation. Nintendo US have said preorders won't start until April 9th when they have the pricing confirmed. Guessing amazon is following their US masters

      • was just reading they have actually delayed it beyond the 9th now due to the tariffs with no new date confirmed yet

        • Nintendo blaming tarrifs could be just a convenient excuse for the. actually panicking over the backlash and maybe contemplating a price reduction.

    • -1

Hi bezoz someone is asking question

    • +3

I’ve observed Amazon AU have been slack in listing gaming pre-orders on quite a few occasions in the past.

Last year, when ‘Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater’ was announced, Amazon listed the pre-order weeks after every other local retailer.

More recently, ‘Tony Hawks Pro Skater 3+4’ became immediately available to pre-order at every other Aus retailer when the game was announced, meanwhile Amazon listed it a week later.

I reckon they’ll drop the listings in one of the upcoming weekdays.

      • I've also noticed that Amazon has cancelled a few of my pre-orders (usually special editions, etc) even before the game has been released.

        • Me too.

Maybe them taking longer to list is related to that. Could be they’ve been burnt by inaccurate stock allocations and are now just holding off until closer to the date.

  • +3

Nintendo getting in early on the Tarriffs for price rises

  • +1

At launch time people will get competitive for your business, not 2 months out. Don't fall for the preorder hype!

  • -4

launch price maybe expensive but its the best chance to get the version that has the most chance of being hackable (like the switch v1) and hence, in future, free games. Worth the gamble/investment lol

    • Do you buy two of them, or do you leave your new toy in a box until a hack is released and miss out on all the fun anyways? Should buy one, have fun, maybe buy a MIG Switch or something for flight mode?

      • huh? just buy one.

        Switch V1 is unpatchable.

        • A Switch 2.

And isn't that your hopes for a day one S2 too?

          • @TheDukeOfNukem: yes buy the switch 2 and use it day one. what do you mean leave it in a box?

            • @Jaduqimon: Well, if you leave it in the box at firmware 1.0 (or whatever it ships with) you'll likely have an easier time hacking it (if and when) than someone who's updated it to the latest firmware. Sure, Switch OG was a little different, but that's usually how these hacks go, PSP was the same for me in the day. PS4 still has sought after earlier firmware consoles for this reason too.

              • @TheDukeOfNukem: nah i just buy one. if its a patcahable hack then thats fine. mod chips will come out later anyway. If its unpatchable then also good. means i can update and play. but V1s most chance so i will be buying at launch.

                • @Jaduqimon: It is unpatchable because it is a physical hardware hack. Unlikely that switch 2 will have anything similar. Only time will tell.

                  • @CodeXD: yep but launch model will have the best chance still.

  • +1

damn… reminds of the $99 N64 game pricing when they came out and that was in 1990's aussie rubles! if you go down the inflation path these games should be $205.37…loll

  • +1

I can't find the exact quote but Nintendo's president has said the reason they didn't do a price cut on the Switch 1 is because he thinks customer should be paying full price for their products. Or words to this effect.

It's a good business strategy and will definitely drive Switch 2 sales because the precedent has been set. Why wait to buy a Switch 2 when a price cut will never come (bundle deals maybe that's as good as it gets).

I was keen even at $700 but high game prices, paid for tech demos and paid for S2 upgrades for existing games is just too much.

TLDR Nintendo is and has always been scummy.

  • -4

ps5 slim is cheaper and twice as powerful

    • +1

two very different system and very 2 different use cases

      • Is he wrong though?

        • +3

can u pick up a ps5 and play it anywhere? Im not defending the switch but the switch is portable whereas the PS5 is not. Both have different use cases once again

        • -2

Yes totally. The ps5 isnt twice as powerful as the ps4 which is the same power as the NS2.

        • You buying a system to look at pretty pictures or to actually play unique and fun games?
And if you want to good, exclusive games you'll be hurt by the PS5 which has managed to have the least first party support and least exclusives of any PlayStation in history by miles.

It's also not even close to 2x faster than the Switch 2 even though it's a stupid comparison

  • Is this post trump tarrif?

    • Trump's tariffs should not affect AU Prices, I would think. It has certainly affected the US! They have had pre-orders frozen by Nintendo, and there may be a price hike for them thanks to the tariffs though.

      • Trump tariffs are an opportunity to rip customers be it aussies or Americans

        • +1

Yeah but in the context of switch 2, it's US tariffs on Japan that increase those costs right?! Nintendo hasn't halted pre-orders globally, just to the US as they weigh up possible retaliation.

  • These prices!! In line with early 90s PC game prices. Although, adjusted for inflation that would be worse. As far as I remember, Neo Geo games were >$200 back around 1991 making them the most expensive.

    • NEOGEO games were infinitely more complex than simple factory printed flash media cards, though.

  • Post RRP is not a bargain

  • +3

Tried to use the Big W 10% off code - XAPR2025 on a $769 Switch 2 but it said the maximum value I can use the code is $500.

  • +2

    What a rort

  • +7

Greedy Nintendo. Hopefully this sells as well as the Wii U did so they learn their lesson.

    • It's gonna absolutely fly off the shelves

  • +6

I'm ok with paying $700 for the switch 2, a 3050 laptop will cost more than that.

But I've been paying $59 for preordering switch games for the last 7 years. This is basically double the price per game.

Considering my favourite games last year were a free game and an indie game, I think I'm good with prime 4 being my last Nintendo Game.

    • $59 for pre ordered totk?

      • I remember walking in to target a few days after launch and getting for for <$70 and that was the most I'd paid for a game in years

I remember Mario Galaxy 2 launching at sub $60 at certain retailers and being absolutely shocked in the reduction since early n64 and obscure gamecube games that were occasionally over $100

      • I had a $49 payment for bigW. I'm not sure what I used to get it to that price at this point.

The comments here make Nintendo fans look sadder than Star wars fans

    • Both (of these things made largely with children in mind) were better when I was a kidTM

      • -1

fwiw i'm a 'fan' too but i'm embarrassed with how bad both fanbases are

        • No one hates games more than gamers, and no one hates Star Wars more than Star Wars fans.

I don't like where Star Wars ended up going for a fair few reasons but I'm still amped to take the kiddo to RotS in a few weeks at the cinema. Seems most things are a LOT more enjoyable these days if you don't ever acknowledge the fan bases of said thing.

  • I want to neg the deal, but it's not OP's fault Fleecetendo is having everyone on with these "new normal" high prices… Considering I've put money into their pockets for almost 40 years, it's a pretty solid slap in the face. That said, I remember Turok on N64 was $130…. so I don't know!

    • +1

I paid $130 for SF2 back on the snes! :)

  • That is a rip off.

  • -3

Switch isn't a PlayStation. The system itself doesn't require the same development time or effort. They'd better go back to their old pricing, plus $10 max. Not buying a switch 2 given it relies on first party games and they don't get discounted much. If they're going to do 75% discount on the games, sure. I'm patient enough to wait until the game is a couple years old.

  • +1

I remember Shadows of the Empire being $120 on launch on n64 (other games too), people blamed the price of cartridges etc etc..

64 games were regularly $99 on launch, and this was after GST was introduced when everyone thought they'd be over $100

Gamecube came out with say $90 as a standard, a few dipped below, a few were higher

But on the Wii we started to see reductions - Mario Galaxy 1 and 2 were what, $70ish? That set a bit of a standard - same carried over to the wii u, you'd have to not be shopping around (EB) or buying something obscure to be paying more than $75 per game despite RRPs of $80.

The thing with the switch was that it was originally targeting that mid point being handheld games (so, $60 as a standard for new, big games) and Wii U games, so $60-70 was OK - a bit more for certain games, less for remakes etc…

So to see this jump with the switch 2 from $70-ish to $120 is really surprising, especially given it's essentially an iteration of the switch 1. They're not going from 2D to 3D (SNES to N64), they're not going from SD to HD (Wii to WiiU) AND a good chunk of the first party games are upgrades

    So people are rightly confused!

EDIT: Just to add too, this Mario Kart doesn't offer a comparable 'gimmick' or 'fun' upgrade over its previous iteration. Look at the series and each one has had something that separates it from the last to give it an edge. Even Mario kart 8 to deluxe offered all DLC (and more DLC on top of that) AND you could play it portably…
Mario Kart world offers… driving on highways between the designed tracks? More players in each race? Neither of those things give me reason to be excited over Mario Kart 8

    • If it offers a story mode a la diddy Kong racing then I'm so in. Mario kart is a yawn fest otherwise
