Got Yelled at for Bad Driving. Is It Bad?

Hi All,

Normally just lurk around ozbargain and always found the automotive section a good read.

Scenario:
Passed a white car in video that was stationary. Arrived at destination 300meters further and parked the car. Driver of white car stopped alongside our car told us off for bad driving.

I reviewed the video (https://1drv.ms/v/c/bf6fe969e835bfd7/ERWcfPJhVNhGsk_FUlfxcBQ…) and can't see anything wrong actions on our end.

Anyway, I don't want to further influence your opinion, so feel free to share your opinion.

Not sure if this is a troll post lol

    • +7

Like at least 69% of posts in forums section, I always just assume the worst tbh

      • +1

        What percentage of comments?

        • Depends on the day, but it will be somewhere between 4% and 20%.

      • +2

        I always assume the blurst

        • +4

I assume the wurst (OP's are usually sausages)

          • @King Tightarse: We do that here so sages will be involved, bred to be the sauce of wisdom in the case.

    • +6

Not a troll. Just really annoyed that we got yelled at.

But after calmed down, just want honest opinion of whether we did actually drive dangerously as claimed by other driver.

If it's just a them issue, will ignore them, but if it's an us issue, I need to learn from it.

        • +3

          My wife was driving.

          • +2

@Lucky Ivan: People are generally aggressive on the road , unfortunately it is what we all have to contend with. Don't believe me , come out to 3064 !

            • +1

@Murkymerv: Got travel around Aus. on my bucket list. One day soon :)

Are you telling me to skip Craigieburn? :)

          • -6

@Lucky Ivan: So, are 'we/us/they/them' your wife's preferred pronouns?

        • Do you use "I" or "me" only if referring to yourself and another person or more? That's very woke of you…

          • -6

@skidexa: I don't use "we" to refer to the other person driving.

            • -1

@tenpercent: Op seems a bit confused, they/them are the correct singular third-person pronouns to use if his wife's preferred pronouns are we/us.

              • @Ahoon: 🤷‍♂️ I always had issues using correct pronouns. I'm still confused.

                • +2

@Lucky Ivan: Don't worry about them they are being ridiculous. It's definitely ok to use "we" in this instance as it's your shared perception that you were not in the wrong.

            • -2

@tenpercent: man thats good to know!!

we dont care, so stfu, ty

      • +13

Just do yourself a favour and let it go op.

        • +17

          👍

Absolutely. Thanks for reply. I recognise your name 🤩

And thanks for all the deals you've posted. I don't get too many things, but just seeing deals is fun.

        • +3

Agree with your sentiment. Mostly when I encounter crap I just compose an FU letter in my head then go do something pleasant.

      • -4

        Maybe speeding
        Maybe no indicator

Does not justify the other driver's actions in such a quiet street

      • +1

Don't be upset, there are lots of dumb people out there. A lot of people of them don't even know the road rules, then they get angry at you because they thought they had the right of way when they didn't.

    • +1

Yep it is, and I can see at least 4 usual trolls and even a few more ones would comment soon.

    • +2

      Next week

"Got yelled at for troll forum post. Is it bad?"

      • +1

Yeah, a lot of people are blaming the OP even though they ticked the top option in the polls…

Odd, considering the OP hasn't done anything wrong.

Lame guys, plus look at the Ute's number plate. "FLASH". You can immediately determine the characteristic of the person driving the vehicle by this alone.

  • +2

Residential speed limit is 50 isn't it, so you weren't speeding.

    • -4

always the cars fault…never the cyclist….

    • -1

It appears to be a enclosed residential road, no separate footpath on either side of the street, I would not be surprised if that road is classified 40kmh like school zones.

OP was going around the corner at 46kmh, maybe more, so can understand why the ute driver was annoyed he wasn't able to get out of his car safely.

  • +6

Was convinced this was going to be a @Mintee post going by the title. Left disappointed.

    • +5

Oh mines coming soon… Too busy learning new car tech for now

      • lol well played!

      • +1

Which new car did you buy?

We'll never know because it's irrelevant.

    • And here I was all ready to pick option 2!

  • +1

    Yeah, it's pretty mundane driving

    • +12

The ute guy probably felt pretty stupid opening his door wide into oncoming traffic. To be fair, it is a pretty stupid thing to do.

      • +8

Yep. I see a lot of people do that on a stationary vehicle especially those ones who just open wide their door without looking if there is an incoming traffic.

There are also those who see an incoming traffic but ignores it and don't close their door a little bit.

  • I mean, if you weren't speeding, then most people would give someone entering/exiting a vehicle a wide berth.

    Just common sense? 🤷

  • +8

Anyway, I don't want to further influence your opinion, so feel free to share your opinion.

I would say they're having a bad day.

Look, I could say you should have slowed down a bit and given them a bit more distance as you went around as they still had the door open, but then I could say the other car is a idiot for having the door open with oncoming traffic.

As for following you and feeling the need to yell at you, yeah totally wasn't called for.

    • +2

Thanks for thorough review. If situation happens again, I probably slow down more.

  • +8

Where's the rest of the video? I wanna see the part where you get yelled at.

  • Best NoR drivers

    • -1

Took me awhile to figure out what NoR meant. 🤦‍♂️

I haven't noticed any difference between north and south of rivers drivers. feel free to expand.

I do feel that Perth drivers are bad drivers compared to others, but it's only because we're spoiled by wide open roads.

  • +3

u sure he was yelling at u or at a cloud?

  • +6

Did I miss something in the video? You literally slowed down to less than 30km/h and gave them a very wide berth… WTF did they even say? What was their main complaint? You slowed down and went as far right as you could.

    • +4

Main complaint was to slow down more. Anyway, this has been a good discussion… So. I guess to be more patient when driving.

Though I think the guy is still a dick. I didnt like him calling my wife stupid.

      • +2

The only reply here should have been… “yeah, ok champ.” given them a “thumbs up” and then walked away.

  • -7

If you drive as well as you spell 'metre' - then it is your fault.

    • 🙋🏻‍♂️ 😂 wife was driving.

    • +3

Metre is the standard spelling of the metric unit for length in nearly all English-speaking nations, the exceptions being the United States the Philippines which use meter.

I've reviewed the footage and you're Lucky Ivan.

  • just look blankly at him ignore and drive/walk away. people are at their worst on the road. some are late for work, some are stressed en route. some are just d-heads. regardless not worthwhile brooding over it or get into a roadrage scuffle. move on

  • +1

Probably not worth putting up your blood pressure to try and understand some of the other drivers on the road and the way they behave. I am sure they all have the surname "bungalow" as there is not a lot up top 🤔

  • +5

    He's driving a Prick Up.
    He is entitled.

    • +6

      “Ranger Danger”…

You can’t spell Ranger without “anger”

  • +6

Lucky it wasn’t a Ranger. The guy would have been angry before you even passed him

    • +5

It's a 2012 Ford Ranger so that probably accounts for the his need to abuse you.

  • +7

Just another tradie who thinks they own the road in the truck

  • +2

There has been a noticeable increase in the aggressive behaviour exhibited by Australians lately.

Their choice of vehicle, coupled with their number plates, serves as a rather telling indication that they are broke. Tick.

Such broke individuals are often seen driving cars that emit excessive exhaust fumes, subjecting the general public to an unpleasant experience. This seems to be an issue more commonly found in suburban areas, where law enforcement tends to exercise a degree of leniency, likely out of concern over potential encounters with gangsters and lately there is a trend that tradies might have gang links because of the whole CFMEU saga.

    • -1

What the actual fark? To all of it.

The #1 issue is this: idiot ute driver leaving his door open, obstructing traffic. I'd have given much less room than OP.

      • +1

Did you miss the number plate on the offending ute states FLASH?

No 1. The license plate offers insight into the character and personality of the individual behind the wheel.

No 2. That is the person that is shouting.

No 3. At least it's not a fake plate..

        • +1

Obsess over the plate all you like. I can make assumptions about the ute driver too.

          1. It's most likely a business vehicle.

          2. Could have done their paperwork on passenger side, so as not to obstruct traffic.

    • Nice one, I understood the reference from the Subaru thread.

  • Maybe white car thought you came around the corner at a much faster speed for the suburbs?

  • The guy tried to get out but couldn't see you driving around the bend so no one is in the wrong when it comes to that..

Does seem you are going a bit fast around the bend in a residential area though? Sped up from 42kmph to 46kmph around the bend.

    • +3

The guy tried to get out but couldn't see you driving around the bend so no one is in the wrong when it comes to that.

What part of that video shows the guy trying to get out?
The whole time you can see the parked car the door is wide open.
There is no sign of the driver's hand/arm on the door as most people usually do when getting out of a car.
Looks to me as though they were sitting there with the door wide open either after getting in to the car or contemplating getting out.

Does seem you are going a bit fast around the bend in a residential area though? Sped up from 42kmph to 46kmph around the bend.

As the speed limit in residential streets is 50km/hr unless otherwise posted how is it a problem to be doing less than that as well as slowing before passing the parked car?

      • -3

Do you maintain the speed limit 100% of the time? You should adjust your speed limit based on the conditions.

        • -1

Do you maintain the speed limit 100% of the time? You should adjust your speed limit based on the conditions.

Exactly as I stated - the OP was driving under the speed limit and also slowed before he passed the parked car.

Clear day, no other vehicles in the street, a reasonably long curve with clear vision a fair way ahead and no cross streets. What conditions do you think are needed for the speed limit to apply?

      • It could be either the person is getting in or out of the vehicle as most people are slow to close their doors.

However, the individual then decides to drive up to the OP and start shouting which itself is a characteristic for someone driving with plates that state FLASH.

Obviously others did not get the message, but I'll point it out again that the number plate on the vehicle states "FLASH".

That is the type of person we are dealing with. Plus do people even know what the OP is, it's the "original poster", apparently some people think I offended the OP. Nope.

The OP is not the person in the ute.

  • -6

I'd take down this self-incriminating evidence before the police see it

    • And do what exactly? Self incrimination of what offence would these “police” apply. Because I know there are definitely laws for pulling up to other drivers and yelling and being angry at them. Pretty sure there are also laws about opening your drivers door without due regard for cars using the road.

      • +1

its a joke. obviously a bad one as per the down votes

        • Ahhhhh… makes sense… forgot the </s> tag ;)

  • +1

This how road rage starts by people telling off to another driver. When it comes to driving many drivers turn into a wild person.

    • Unsurprising for someone with number plates that state "FLASH". Obviously broke too.

  • +3

It looks like a 2012 Ford Ranger - it's nothing less than what a Ford Ranger driver would act like

I enhanced the image of the tradie… https://i.ibb.co/rf2WwSD9/whoisit.png

  • +2

Never try to understand a fellow road user. Got flashed and honked as a car made to overtake me for driving too slow presumibly. They failed to see the endless line of traffic directly in front of my car I guess …

    • Well in that case it's quite understandable. Stupid, but understandable.

  • -2

The real issue here is that you were so offended by someone challenging your driving skills, that you uploaded a video of the incident for the opinion of strangers on the internet.

    • +1

Found the driver of the UTE.

      Hello "Mr FLASH", You're broke.

    • Morning. At the time I was offended.

I've already let it go last night.

The opinions on ozbargain are good to read. All the different opinions gives me a broader view how other people might handle this situation.

Anyway, I feel obliged to comment as I created this forum.

  • Was driving down a narrow suburban road one day at 60 and I hear a loud clunk from the left front door, and the mirror was gone. Looked back in the rear view mirror and there was a guy just getting out of a parked early-model Toyota Land Cruiser looking down at his drivers door he'd just opening into the passing traffic, looking puzzled at what the clunk from it was as he'd opened it. By the time I went round the block he was gone, and no sign of my car's left door mirror, so I guess he figured it out, and didn't want to pay for a new mirror.

Now if the OP had come that close the other car's driver might have had reason to complain.

Mazda seemed to have designed the mirrors to shear off easily, because I lost another one to a kid on a bicycle going between the lanes in heavy traffic. He just gave me the finger and kept going.

  • +2

Can't see anything wrong tbh, your vehicle slowed down and seem to give the ute a wide berth before passing it?

Can you share what exactly was the "bad driving" he was yelling about, assuming it was intelligible?

  • The road rage is real these days.

  • This is my guess: He had his drivers side door open. He was unaware of you approaching. He was surprised at the last minute and thought you were about to smash into his door which clearly you were not. You also didn’t appear to be speeding or driving badly.

I had a similar experience recently where is signalled to turn left well in advance of the turn and a pr!ck behind me decided to turn it into a shouting match hurling abuse at me.

Human behaviour is unpredictable and often not good.

    Move on.

  • You did absolutely nothing wrong. I would have told him to kick rocks.

  • +1

The guy just left his door open taking his sweet time to get out

I put this with those w@nkers that put their car in reverse but don't go anywhere and just scare whoever is walking behind their car

  • -2

Well that's 10 seconds + the time spent reading the post that I'll never get back!

  • +2

You should have an option for "It's a Tradie." Then people would understand why he's being overly aggressive and a crybaby.
