Wise or Aus Post Credit Card for Internet Purchases?

Hi, I was just about to get an Auspost prepaid credit card to make internet purchases, mainly to limit my risk to amount on the card, rather than expose details of one of the banks I bank with. Thought I should research here first in case I was missing out on something. Wise (and Macquarie, etc) popped up and read a fair bit about them.

The card will 95% be used for internet purchases in Aus, any advantage one way or the other? Or just not bother worrying about, too small an issue or difference to matter in the use case? Thanks in advance

What did your reading tell you about them?

Why not get a credit card and collect points?

Not sure who you bank with but usually there is discounted annual fee if you already have an account with them.

  • Just sign up for a debit card with a bank you don't normally use - ideally one without any forex fees (just in case)

Transfer only what's needed for your purchase, spend it, leave it empty again

Code XD, just wanted to keep this totally separate from the bank accounts. I have a couple of cards which accumulate points, this is a protection thing.

Ten percent, most use Wise for OS transactions, I didn't read much about using locally, hoping to get some user experience.

Prepaid, if you get scammed, that does happen, you get ZERO back. If you get scammed, the bank issues a CC, which eventually refunds you based on how it happened.

  • Thanks Shadowsfury, that may work out the way

  • I never thought of that Boomramada, that does make a difference

    • credit card - you’re spending someone else’s money (bank/card provider’s) not yours, so extra protection against fraud, also some offer 90-day purchase protection, up to 1yr extended warranty

    • debit card - i prefer Revolut which offers unlimited virtual card numbers

    • also pay via PayPal, who have their own buyer protection in addition to the card provider’s, or other 3rd party payment processor, such as Apple/Google Pay, to hide your actual card number from merchants

ps to reply to comments, use the reply button rather than making a new comment :)

    • Taught me two things Tonestar, looking in to Revolut now - and reply button :)

    • Thanks for the Revolut link Tonester, just signed up for the $40 offer

Zip allows you to generate one-time use cards that expire after 24-hours. Gives me anonymity and safety. But you have to use Zip, lol.

I used to use the reloadable Australia Post card for subscriptions and online purchases. At first it was good but then over time so many places stopped accepting it that it made it not a viable option anymore.
I did what other people have suggested and opened a debit card with a different bank to my usual one and use that. I only keep a small amount in the account and transfer money across as I needed.
