For those paying in USD this is how you get the correct exchange rate in PayPal:

Setting overseas websites to AUD or letting PayPal do the currency conversion results in an inflated rate. To get the correct rate you need a card without international fees and do the following:

  • Set the website currency to USD
  • Checkout with PayPal
  • Select your card with no international fees
  • Click "See currency options"
  • Select USD to bill the card in USD instead of AUD
  • Proceed with checkout

Now you'll get the correct MasterCard or VISA exchange rate depending on the card.

  • Unique coupon code, and must head to their main page and then click “grab now”

Looks like it only available through the AliExpress App.

seems like A229 3Chis on special on Viofo Austrlia for $359.99, very good price I reckon if not priced error as their 2ch is at $ 360.99. a229 plus would be preferred as image quality as shape but not as hot as a229 pro. Plus this one is 3ch so you can cover front, rear and side (depends on how you mount it).

Thanks for your review. It helps!

  • Can you turn the screen off permanently?

    • +1

it turns off automatically after like a minute

    • +1

      You can set a timer.

  • How do you rate this for $145 usd? For the dual and hw kit?

    https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005008473283113.html

  • I'm getting US$226.37 instead

    • +1

The final price should be this:
      https://files.ozbargain.com.au/upload/399144/120610/img_8381…

I’ve unselected to use coins and the shopping credits I’ve obtained thus far as well

Did you grab the coupon? The USD$226.37 is the base price before factoring in GST and coupons usage

      • +1

Ah yes, my bad. $223.11 is checkout total. Silly me!

  • hmmm, looks like a good deal.

  • -1

Haven't used aliexpress before and going to register for this deal only. Any idea if new user coupon code will be given? And if yes then can i club with the one suggested in post as well?

Totally didn't put in large order that shipped very promptly, yesterday.

  • Bought the plus couple of days ago, haven’t arrived yet, worth it to replace it with the pro?

    • +5

Nah, they're 90% the same, only difference is that the Pro can record in 4K from the front camera, while Plus can only do 2k.

They both use the same sensor and the rear camera is exactly the same, I've looked at footage from both and it's marginal.

Pro has more issues with overheating, and uses more storage, not worth paying a premium for.

      • +1

They do not use the same sensor lol. The Plus uses the Starvis 2 IMX675 and the Pro the IMX678.

Difference in footage isn't marginal, but plate capture is better on the Pro. By worldly amounts, no, but it's still noticeable.

Pro really only has issues overheating in temps outside of 35C and above. Has a lower thermal max setting than other dashcams, so shuts down to avoid damage.

        • +1

My bad, that was just meant to be about the rear camera using the same sensor and design, so the extra money you're paying is only for the improved front camera.

I'd get the Pro if you plan on uploading the videos to YouTube etc, the picture quality is definitely better, just not $100 better.

How do you expect a device that overheats above 35C to function in a country with 45C days? Paying more for worse reliability and shorter recording capacity seems absurd if you don't care about 4K

          • @Jolakot: All good, the 4k does come in handy for plate reads it's not about uploading to YouTube, it does help with discerning details trust me

I know with the overheating, it's a decision they've made more than anything. Other models such as Vantrue keep firing on all cylinders with the heat for better or worse.

I'm in a fortunate position where I get a lot of models for testing, but I do have backup A329 (which doesn't shutdown) and rotating model of choice (Omni 4K at the moment but also Vantrue E1 Pro). 99% of folks don't and need something dependable and reliable as you say.

Viofo does have the best image quality to me and are a powerhouse but it comes with asterisks

        • +1

Pro really only has issues overheating in temps outside of 35C and above. Has a lower thermal max setting than other dashcams, so shuts down to avoid damage.

Can you share any more details on what happens in practice? I have a Pro but always wondered how different dashcams handle the heat… particularly when I park in an outdoor/uncovered carpark and have the reflective sunshades on the windscreen potentially reflecting more heat onto where the dashcam is.

          • @jace88: Say I park undercover and no sun beating down on it, and it's not hardwired nor operating in parking mode. Drive out in the hot sun without stopping on a 35C+ above day and it will shut down 20-30 min in.
Same happens if I drive for that period of time but then park outside a shop and leave the car running etc.

            • +1

@adrianhughes1998: Does it make a difference if it's hardwired and in parking mode? I thought parking mode just means it stays on until your car battery starts to deplete (up until a limit)?

  • Can anyone recommend an installer in Melbourne?

    • What car? The install is very easy tbh

    • Some cars have usb behind the rear view mirror, some can use dongar cable to make a usb port from powered rear view mirror too.
If you don't have that on your vehicle then unfortunately, you have to run the wires from install location to usb /cig lighter port

      • Or to the internal fuse box and use a fuse tap to make it a clean install.

      • +1

I'll gather he knows this, hence he's asking for installer recommendations.

    • its honestly very easy to install yourself.
if you want it hard-wired (i.e. wired to the fusebox so that the camera can record while the car is off), then its a bit more work, but still very doable on your own.

      • +1

I wouldn't say it's 'very easy', but it's not hard for someone that isn't afraid to pull apart their interior and has some experience with terminating cables, etc.

        • +1

If you've got a shitty car like a Honda hrv the fuse box is in the shittiest of shit locations. Was a right royal pain in the arse to wire up but once done set and forget.

  • Wish they would do a combo deal with the RWC200 Waterproof Rear Camera, the rear camera bundles are pretty pointless for a dual cab ute with canopy or tray.

  • What are the chances the A329 will go on sale soon too? If I'm spending this much on a dashcam I'd rather get the new version rather than "last seasons" model.

    • you'll have to wait till a newer version comes out before the A329 goes on sale considering thats the latest model

      • +1

A329S series coming later this year. But too much of a wait for most people.

    • Is the A329 that much better?

      • +2

A229 Pro is 90% of the A329. 4k60 doesn't provide that much more utility.

SSD support is pretty hit and miss, Viofo has had to backtrack on their SSD enclosure support and remove that completely due to compatibility issues.

      • Much lower power draw especially in park mode.

Have a look at this video. It covers good differences between the two models inc power draw etc

        https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vv1xVHFsmXc&pp=ygULYTMyOSByZ…

      • In addition to the above replies, A329 gives you 4k60, no HDR and A229 Pro gives you 4k30 with HDR.

  • Any recs on a cheaper dash cam setup? I've never owned one, nor a vehcile for that matter (companies cars always), so I have no idea where to start.

    • I have the VIOFO A119 Mini 2 - front only. Works fine. Never had to use it for any incidents/accidents, but have reviewed the playback and the footage is pretty clear - both day and night. Should be able to pick it up fairly cheap. The app is a little slow, but it works if you ever need it.

Was just at $69 a couple of days ago. Simple and just works flawlessly. Quick support available too. I added the hardwire kit so it records when parked. I bought two. One didn't recognise the SD card and Amazon replaced it without issue. Bonus perk of Amazon there.

I had a pretty bad experience with AliExpress, particularly with the Viofo seller. For Australian customers, Viofo sends the parcel through a courier based in Dubai (I forgot the name), no proper tracking, no proof of delivery, no customer hotline, nothing at all. My package was delayed and apparently was delivered to the wrong address, which you have to prove to AliExpress to get a refund. I was successful in getting my refund but I wouldn't recommend it to others.

    • Are you sure it was through this same exact Viofo seller?
The shipping option shows as AliExpress Standard Shipping which means there should have a tracking provided

    • What's the name of the store you ordered from? Any links? Legitimate listings send from China, Hong Kong or Australia. Fake stores with no/low feedback often ship from other countries like Turkey and Brazil.

      • I guess we will never know the answer to our questions.

Love it when they complain, leave a neg, but never fully explain or answer if there are any questions at all

        • My bs meter is off the scales.

  • I can only find a $40 voucher to apply on US $299+. For this i can only apply $20 coupon and price coming to be US $256 for 2 channel with HK4. Any help appreciated.

    • You'll need to use the app first to 'grab' the coupon code. Check out as normal either through the app or desktop after and you should see the US$30 coupon applied.

  • I have this model in my car but have been thinking of adding something for the side windows. Has anyone else here done this and if so, which camera(s) did you use, please?

  • Where is the US$30 coupon?? I can't locate

    • Via app. On main screen, click on the birthday bash banner, and then click on grab now

      • +1

Well thats where I was looking at but no $30 coupon for me. Could be targeted

        • It shouldn’t be targeted. I’ve it in all of my 2 accounts and it was also available in one of their comments above too

Are you able to share a screenshot like how I did in my post description in the “grab now” and if it’s targeted I’ll report it to the mods to tag it

          • @BargainsGrabber: Somehow it appeared now. Probably need to keep the app opened for a while

  • Shopback with 17% cashback but $50 cap per transaction if anyone is willing to try their luck

  • What is the advantage of paying USD?

    • +1

Slightly cheaper if you have no international fee card
