Rav4 XSE or Rav4 Cruiser or New Rav4 2026?

I'm considering buying a new hybrid RAV4 in the future. Should I choose the XSE or the Cruiser? The Cruiser is about AUD 2,000 more expensive than the XSE. Or should I just wait for the next-generation RAV4, which is expected to be released in 2026?

I want leather seats and a power tailgate, which are unavailable in the lower trims, GXL and GX.

Thank you.

What's a toyoto? Is it a cheap knock off Toyota?

      • -3

as you said it is toy-oto. You are happy now!

At least your comments are of consistent quality.

$2,000 isn't much more when you're spending ~$55k already. List the upgrades and see if they add value to you or not, irrelevant what others think.

love my GX, didn't need the other stuff…. but if you have the cash go the Cruiser.

  • +1

Have a Cruiser Hybrid. Love it.

Have looked at the new model. Dont be a fanboi - always wait 12 months (so 27). If you buy now, are you receiving vehicle now? If so, then you'll have 2 years before any real potential change over.

You also have to consider likely price increases with next gen. It wont be a $55-60k car

  • I want leather seats

Does any RAV4 have leather seats?

    • NONE

        Thought so.

      Pleather?

      • +4

I think they call it SofTex - oh what a feeling.

        • +1

Calling it vinyl (which it probably is) is no good for marketing. You need to call it something fancy!

          • +3

@Euphemistic: Mercedes have MBtex in most of their budget and midrange models. Most of their customers probably think it's leather.

            • @MS Paint: VW Golf 5s have real leather seats with optional packs I think they are almost 20 years old cars.

            • @MS Paint: Most of their customers don't care, as long as someone else can see the badge.

        • +2

From memory, SofTex is only in the XSE. The Cruiser gets a leather ascented interior (partially leather, mainly pleather).

How far in the future? Personally i reckon youd have to be mad to spend $50k on an SUV that isnt electric.

    • -2

Talk about the future, EVs and Hybrids have become a technology purchase.
Hence waiting until "Next year" always brings new improved technology and lower costs (hopefully)

Therefore the short answer to OPs question is…

      wait until 2026

  • You can get a Suzuki with leather seats for a lot less.

    • and any German cars.

      • or any car with more equipment and features

        • -1

          But but but… "Toyota".

  • +1

    i got a cx5 yesterday

  • I'd cross the 1026 model off the list for now, last time I checked they haven't released any pics or specs. There are a few 'artists impressions' going around that range from 'meh' to 'ok, not bad'. So you are then left with this year's models, the Cruiser Hybrid and the XSE Hybrid both come with the E-CVT so that's a plus, a normal CVT would be a deal breaker for me. And the current models have pretty much had all the bugs worked out at this stage, the new models might not have though I'm sure Toyota warranty will take of you if needed.

  • I'm in the market for a new RAV4 and am holding out for the next generation. If the next gen Camry is out… that means the RAV4 is nearly out.

  • +1

If you're into the $55-60k range, take a look at the Mazda CX-60. Pretty sure they have leather seats and power tailgate. They also have a 6 cylindar engine!

    • +1

They also have a 6 cylindar engine!

Not sure why that's a plus? Toyota hybrids beat many cars off the line due to the electric assist

      • A 6 will generally not need to work as hard to get the same amount of power as a 4 cylinder engineer does, so lower rpm, quieter.. Probably be a bit better at higher speeds and freeway driving as well.

If you want fast off the line get an EV..

        • generally
          probably

So really, you don't know, you're just going "mOaR CyLiNdErS bEtTeR"

You know we're not in the 80s any more, right?

Some people may prioritise fuel economy as well:

          CX-60 V6:

          Highway - 967 km 6.0 L/100km
          Average - 784 km 7.4 L/100km
          City - 592 km 9.8 L/100km

          RAV4 Cruiser AWD:

          Highway 1146 km 4.8 L/100km
          Average - 4.8 L/100km
          City - 1100 km 5 L/100km

Nearly double the fuel usage around town

@spackbace: Hey I’m just providing OP with some alternative options for their consideration. No need to troll.

          • +1

@spackbace: Fair point re fuel economy.
Though I’m not sure many of the manufacturer claims are all that reliable - including the Mazda ones..

          • +2

@spackbace: RAV4 Cruiser hybrid doesn't go anywhere near that. 6-6.5 L is more like it

            • +1

@pjbargain15: All the demo's I've driven have maxed at 6L, but I've seen under that easily

            • @pjbargain15: I was doing 5.6L/100km in a 2021 Cruiser AWD Hybrid. Saw it as low as 5.1L/100km with my mum driving.

      6 cylindar

      Is that under the bonut?

      • +3

Yep, just in front of the transmishin. :p

        • +1

Rear wheel drive bias is nice as well for those that want to drive their cars, not just tag along for the ride.

          • @MS Paint: Yep, I’ve been looking at a new(er) car recently - the RAV is the ‘go to’ for 5 seat SUV’s it seems but they’re a bore to drive.. Keen to try a CX60, though I’m not sure I need all the luxury bits they include..

  • If you need it soonish, get the current Cruiser, $2,000 gets you a lot of value. Don't understand why they introduced a stripped back XSE with two tone roof instead of more functional inclusions.

If you can wait, wait for the next generation model. But it will be a long wait as local launch is usually delayed, may not see it until 2027. And most likely it will cost more, especially higher trim models (the ones with leather seats).

Other brands may heavily discount runout models, not Toyota, so current Cruiser will not be suddenly very cheap.

    • I believe the XSE was introduced when wait times for the higher grades were still ridiculous

      • Yeah, JBL stereo parts were causing delays

      • That makes sense, I remember the crazy wait time.

I went into a Toyota dealership to look at another car and saw the that the RAV4 Cruiser was $60k driveaway.

Toyota are taking the mickey out of the public but if I was them, I would too as the buyers are blinded by the badge and are willing to pay the high prices.

The interior and exterior of the car looks like a $30k car at best. The only thing the car has going for it is the fuel efficient engine.

For under $59k driveaway you could get a CX60 with a 3.3L Diesel inline 6. The petrol 3.3L inline 6 is even cheaper. These cars are premium and worth the money, the top of the line RAV4's are neither premium nor worth the money.

OR get an EV for the low running costs and tax advantages.

    • fair to say Toyota has the worst value for money proposition due to their brand power. 60k can get a car two classes up with a much nicer interior. interestingly in the US Mazda has eclipsed Toyota in terms of reliability ratings

      • I wouldn't say they are the worst but are terrible.

Honda has some very overpriced cars.

Let's not even mention Mercedes and Porsche.

        Mercedes C200 with a 1.5L 4cyl is $86k drive away.

I still think Toyota is still #1 for reliability in Australia. I believe the US have some trouble with some models we don't have here (V6 petrol turbo and also 'trucks')

      • interestingly in the US Mazda has eclipsed Toyota in terms of reliability ratings

There's a forum thread here somewhere, but that was based on new cars. In used cars, Toyota was still on top

      • Toyota can't be nice or premium because they have Lexus.

    • I ordered one in Jan for 56k with metalic paint. They aren't even 60K on toyota's website which is rrp.

      • Just curious, when do you expect delivery?

        • +1

So I ordered start of 2nd Jan and it arrived just before long weekend. Longer than their "absolute worst case of 3 months, probably 4-6 weeks".

  • i got a cruiser, because my wife and i drive the same car the most useful feature is the memory seats. being able to get in and press a button and have the seat come back to exactly how you like it is so underated!

    • You can link the memory to certain keys (can’t remember how though), so it’ll automatically go to x position if x key is used to unlock the car.

    • Isn't this a standard feature with all cars with electric seats?

      • No.

    Spend $60k on a Toyoda Rav4?

    You deserve a Das Auto.
