    • +8

Yeah it’s all about 4kk now.

      • -1

        Nothing better than sddhdd4kk8kk though.

      • +1

        Kkkkkkkk

        • Kekekeke

God, I was thinking “that IS dang cheap” and your comment confused me for a second until I realised this is not and SSD.

This not really a deal lol.

  • +47

$50/TB for HDD storage doesn't seem like much of a deal

    • +9

Its also a portable drive so it'll just somehow die in 3 months

      • -5

This is no ordinary portable drive. It's a game drive. I've had the 4TB version of this WD Black Game Drive for a few years so far and it's still going strong. I got it from EB Games.

        • +9

I can't tell whether this is satire or not.

        • What is the difference between a game drive and a portable drive?

        • Cool story man.

      • the drive will be fine for years, the connector will die in 3 months lol

    • +3

Isn't $69 for 2TB the norm during sales?

      • -6

Not for a portable game drive it isn't. It's not made and marketed as an ordinary portable hard drive and so it's priced higher. It's designed to be harder to break when dropped. Designed to be lugged in back packs etc without the fear of damage.

It's hard to see a 2TB Portable Game Drive for under $100 on sale. This is the first time that i've ever seen this game drive for under $100. Normally about $150-160 when not on sale.

For example it's currently $157 at Officeworks and JB. Not on sale unfortunately. This drive doesn't go on sale very often at all.

These are smr wd blues inside.

    • +18

Oh wow. Really? I'm gonna have a look into that cause I was tempted to grab one of these.

Yep: it's a standard 5400rpm drive and the WD Black is just branding. DODGY!

      • +6

Far out they couldn't even pretend its a 7200 , LAME

      • +1

        Bruhhh seriously? Wow

    • Can they even be shucked or are they like other WD 2.5" drives with the USB soldered directly to PCB?

      • +3

It can't be shucked the same as all WD portable drives. The USB Micro B port is soldiered directly to the PCB and there isn't a SATA connector on the drive. If you removed the internal drive then it will still always have to be connected through USB to function.

    • I don't think there is any portable game drives which aren't smr drives.

  • +2

HDD!? Feeling like Back to the future..

    • +1

HDD are very much alive for NAS/Server storage. Wouldn't use it as OS/Game storage, though.

  • +6

    An eye watering 130 MB/S

  • +2

Holy shit I didn't realize how far out of hand HDD prices have gotten.

BS "game drive" marketing aside, even your standard Seagate portable used to be $84 before discounts back in Nov 2021 at JB Hi-Fi. That same model is now $129.

    • +1

      Chia mining?
      AU$ exchange rate?

      • Exchange rate for sure, at least partially. But I don't think many people were bothering with 2.5" drives for Chia. That was done with 3.5" drives because of pure $/TB, which are being unloaded as "refurb" by some sellers several years later now they're done with them.

        • +1

Yeah, if you see the price of Chia now, it's gone the way of the majority of the crypto projects → Down.

That's a scam. Not an SSD, and definately not 2TB. Gut it and you'll find a 64GB or similar MicroSD card attached to a USB adapter circuit board thingy, with enough hot glue to make James blush.

I bought it and will find out and will let you know. It is sold by Amazon so no sweat for return.

        • +1

Make sure you do a full test with H2testw and post the screenshot here with the red progress bar and/or textbox when it fails.

          • +1

@MattCat: I received it today and no need to test what you recomanded. It spits out error when I tried to send 1tb file to it. It shows 1.9TB but absolutely it is not. I saw a screen shot someone teared down it. It has a cheap sdcard installed in sd card reader. Return requested. If someone bought it from my link via Amazon, please return it. There are two 5 stars reviews in the product page, they are absolutely fake as one of review says it has more than 2TB cap and it is not impossible even if it is a genuine 2tb ssd.

            • @Jamie777: I'm not going be one of those people who go "i told you so", because I understand the pure curiosity of seeing it with your own eyes. It can be a bit of harmless fun, especially with Amazon being so painless with returns haha. Just make sure to leave a negative review for other potential customers to see so they can avoid.

If they don't ask you to send it back to them, you should pull it apart and look inside just for the hell of it. It's certainly not worth storing data on.

              • @MattCat:

It can be a bit of harmless fun

                Except it’s not harmless fun.

                1) By buying it the sales count goes up and the Amazon algorithm is more likely to suggest it to others.
                2) Plugging in an obvious dodge USB device into a computer is asking for malware.

                • @PainToad:

                  Except it’s not harmless fun.

I said it can be harmless fun. Not it is. There's a reason for that.

                  1) By buying it the sales count goes up and the Amazon algorithm is more likely to suggest it to others.

The Amazon algorithm seems to be fine and dandy doing that all by itself for the past several years. No shortage in new scam listings, all with a handful of fake reviews to go along. If you feel guilty, then I'm sure leaving a 1-star review afterwards as a "Verified Purchase" will far outweigh the impact a single purchase has.

                  2) Plugging in an obvious dodge USB device into a computer is asking for malware.

[Press X to doubt]. Obviously it's possible, just not likely. The #1 goal with these devices is to fool people they're legit for long enough to run out the return period. Risking setting off someone's AV the moment they plug it in is bad for business because it just means more returns and negative reviews. Besides, anyone who is the right kind of curious to be knowingly buying fake drives for the lulz probably has a shitty airgapped 10 year old laptop they keep around for this purpose.

  • +1

Thought this was a really good deal until I discovered it isn't SSD. Can't believe this is being marketed as a game drive lol

    • +1

I guess they can still market it as a game drive, just that you have to wait 10 minutes each time to load a game XD

      • It's the retro experience!

  • -1

Google shows for an each $1 you can get 3TB @ CEX https://au.webuy.com/product-detail?id=SHDDWDP103TB

    • +1

Cex is a second-hand store, those are used drives

  • FWIW, there's also this drive, 8TB ie. $42/TB. Very fast with a throughput of 250MB/s during a backup, I'm happy. Note its externally powered as opposed to the 2TB drive above.

    https://www.amazon.com.au/gp/product/B07XVB7G99/ref=ppx_od_d…

  • can it be shucked? is it even worth doing it for a little more internal long term storage (t0rrent drive)?

    • +1

No it can't be shucked. The USB Micro B port is soldiered to the PCB of the internal drive.

    • Even if they could be shucked it doesn't seem like it would be worth it since its just a shitty 5400rpm drive inside.

  • +1

I use these for Xbox One X external storage but that's about it these days. Solid drive, though. Had one for a few years that flew to Melbourne and back a couple of times and is still going strong.

  • Guys, for those of us looking for an external SSD version, will this be ok?

    https://www.kmart.com.au/product/sandisk-portable-ssd-usb-3.…

What I need it for - wedding photographer has asked for a hdd of at least 700gb to put the files on. I'm assuming the HDD in this deal won't perform as well as the SSD in the kmart link above?

  • Looks like an old hhd by the port it uses.

  • -1

Haha I purchased one a few years ago thinking I was buying the ssd version….. but the ssd version of it was like $700+ at the time.

Another error was copying everything over and wondering why it was so slow - it was formatted to fat32 :-/

Amazingly I've still not done anything to rectify it - my logic being It'll take ages to copy everything over and copying it back again. Also has issues with Windows 11 (speed is gimped, yet it runs faster on Windows 10).

I use it as my media drive for the Nvidia Shield (4k, bluray etc)
