On sale is this high end AMD CPU for those still on the AM4 platform. A great choice for those who need to maximize multi-core performance, whether for compiling, virtual machines, video editing, rendering, and more. If you're looking to do gaming, you're not going to see a massive improvement over the 5600X/5700X and the 5700X3D/5800X3D would be a better choice.

Featuring 16 cores, 32 threads, base clock of 3.4GHz, boost clock of 4.9GHz and 105W default TDP.

For those paying in USD this is how you get the correct exchange rate in PayPal:

Setting overseas websites to AUD or letting PayPal do the currency conversion results in an inflated rate. To get the correct rate you need a card without international fees and do the following:

  • Set the website currency to USD
  • Checkout with PayPal
  • Select your card with no international fees
  • Click "See currency options"
  • Select USD to bill the card in USD instead of AUD
  • Proceed with checkout

Now you'll get the correct MasterCard or VISA exchange rate depending on the card.

$398 at umart is a much better prospect.
You'd want to get it for under $300 to bother buying from AliExpress.

Anyone know what a used R7 3700X goes for? They are about $530 new (wonder why they are more than the 5700x3d) I paid about $400 in 2020.
May not bother upsetting my build unless it was a $200 change over or something.

      • A used 3700x will go for $100-150 on marketplace.

Waiting for a good 5700x3D deal would be your best bet. I wouldnt pay the $400 retail for one. Better off saving for an AM5 upgrade at that point imo.

        • Yeah I would grab one for $300 max, sell mine for what you say. Bit of a tax deduction m

To be honest it's fine but would be an alright endgame upgrade, not wanting to do a bigger upgrade just swapping parts without a new install.

  • Good CPU I am still using mine I got from this deal 2 years 7 months ago for $687. https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/719525

  • Damn paid a lot more for the 5900XT recently

  • Could someone explain to me why I should need a 5950x in 2025?
upgrade on a CPU heavy loaded system? but 7000 and 9000 series has powerful than zen3
new building AM4 platform? you sure to build a brand new legacy system?
It even does not come with a integrate graphics that you need worries about a graphics card in it

    • If you have an existing AM4 build and need high core, thread count this is a whole lot cheaper than replacing the whole rig to AM5. A 6 core, 12 thread 7000 or 9000 series isn't going to be better than this, due to the lower number of cores in tasks where more cores are needed.

An integrated GPU in a Ryzen chip is going to reduce the performance too. Hence why a 5600G is more like a 5500 than 5600X. If I was rendering I'd be wanting a dedicated GPU anyway.

  • OzB free portal for some good advice. I need one.

    I'm considering upgrading my son's PC with current specs R9 3900x / x570 Prime / 64GB memory / GTX 1080ti

will this be a good upgrade if primary use is After Effects and other content creation softwares. He doesn't game on this PC or at least hardly. Or should i stop putting money on legacy parts and plan for an AM5 upgrade?

i thought doing it this way, can give my other son the 3900x to replace his 1700.

    • Given he's got a good motherboard and 64GB ram, then this is probably your best bang for buck.

You're not going to get double speedup going from 3900X to 5950X though - probably around 50% - the cores are about 19% better IPC, plus you get 33% more cores. That is assuming your productivity software scales well with 16 cores/32 threads.

thanks. considering all options. Someone else actually suggested to go 5800X3d or one with lower core count but higher single core speed which affects live view.

the final render will take as long as it takes anyway to run until finished while AFK. Any truth in that statement?

I think for my son the perception of lag in live view is what makes him think his PC is slow.

        • AE and other adobe software is fairly single core reliant for anything besides the final render. It's also just very bloated and unstable software regardless of what hardware you have.
