My current backpack is due for replacement and I've been looking around at popular travel packs. This seems a favourite and (I think) a long time since it's been at this kind of price.

Great bag. Have had one for 8 years or so now. Use it everytime I travel, instead of a suitcase.
Great for both carry on & checkin. Forces you to pack a little lighter, but can still store a lot.
Snap! Highly recommend
Yeah its a bit heavy for 7kg carry on, but I've only really had issue with Vietjet who weigh right before you go thru security lol
I've used it for 7KG carry on only for all my travels the past 10 years. Brilliant bag. Just chuck on layers/fill your pockets at the airport if really needed.
Me too, done 9 euro/US/Africa trips with it (all 2.5-3 weeks) and only ever carried on, same goes for my wife.
WWhich bag would you suggest for permanent carry on that is lighter? Been searching for a light carry on that fits a lot
CabinZero Classic 44L, closer to 40L in practice and 760g. You can stuff it to the absolute gills to hit that 44L but it's not fun. It's also not great to carry either but if you're after the most volume for the weight then it's the one.
If you want to go super crazy, zpacks have some huge bags in that 500-600g ballpark but the price tag is also $500-600. The aesthetic is also something too.
@GUYANDSON: ULA Dragonfly 725g or similar.
Tomtoc has one good too.I’m looking for a carry on for one bag travels and trying to stay under 1kg. Currently have a Tatonka barrel which is great at about 1.2kg but can’t do hikes at the end destination with it.
I didn't realise the day pack is now sold separately, that kind of sucks. I find it really helpful when travelling.
you're probably thinking of the 55L pack, which is still available
I reckon you're right - my bad!
FWIW, I haven't had any issues with using the 55L as carry on (as long as I keep it below the weight limit) - can easily stuff it into the dimension checking cages.55 is confusing here lol, they have a farpoint/fairview 55 (40+15) and a 70 (55+15) the 15 is the daypack. So you might have the 40L bag with the 15L daypack.
@GUYANDSON: Shiiiiiet that's a confusing product line 😂
I'm almost certain that what I have is the farpoint 70, though it pre-dates the graphic on the bag telling me as much.
this is the fairview for what it's worth, the whole carry system are designed for women/people with smaller frames.
damn, i bought this bag for $130 years ago and still use it. At the time, was one of the largest carry-ons you could bring onto planes.
Yeah i bought mine around same price back in like 2016
A zipper pull broke off on my last Osprey backpack, sent it to Finn Industries was repaired for free. Can't tell it was repaired, looks original.
They didn't ask when or where it was purchased. Did have to pay for postage, return was free.
Can you explain the process for claiming please? I've got quite few minor issues (mostly my fault from overpacking - this is a solid backpack everyone)
Submit an online form: https://outdooragencies.support/warranty-form/
If repairable, they will assign a RAN# and get you to post the backpack to Finn Industries (if they are still the repair partner).
I guess there will be situations too costly to repair, not sure what they would do.
Wondering if someone has insight into how this compares to the Bellroy Travel lite backpack? Other than price point of course
this will be much more comfortable to carry loaded up (I'd say when 10kg+), the frame, load lifters and hip belt help a ton on that front. Organisational aspect of the Bellroy will be better.
This one has a hip belt to help with heavy load. Your shoulders will be happy
Hip belt makes it feel like you're only carrying 1/5th of the weight
Currently trailing the 38l Bellroy Lite. If you're doing <7kg carry on (properly), the Bellroy is great at around 1kg dry. I have the Tomtoc T66 which is around 1.3kg and I think the Osprey is about 1.6kg. Do you know how many extra pairs of undies 300g is , let alone 600g ? :P Of course, the materials are very different and the Tomtoc feels a lot more robust.
I've just packed the Bellroy to about 9.5kgs for a work trip (dual notebook, bottle of wine) and have to catch some public transport so will update here if appropriate. My current impressions are if you're carrying just clothes etc which I'm planning to do on my next overseas then Bellroy is great however if you're carrying a lot of tech equipment the Tomtoc would be better. Additional I think if you're packing over 7kg, then the materials and better harness on the Tomtoc would be better and and hip belt on the Osprey would be a bonus for even heavier weights.
Just my 2.2c (Inc gst) worth :)
Osprey is 40l vs Bellroy 38l, do you know how many pairs of extra undies 2l is?
Just my 2c worth (cash deal, no GST)Really depends on what you pack but can definitely hit 7KG much sooner than volume. But depends on density of items and clothes etc obviously. I can hit 7KG in a 30L pack
Last June, I did around three weeks euro trip with this Farpoint, as One Bag Travel. Some pros/learnings:
1- The front straps helped me strap a Osprey Daylite Plus bag. I used that Daylite as Daypack, plus used Daylite's pockets as external pockets, when strapped to Farpoint.
2- If you use Farpoint as OBT, you'll need a day bag.
3- If you pack smartly and only take what you need, not what you MAY need, 40L is overkill in my opinion. But this learning comes with experience.
4- This bag is heavy at 1.6L but it makes up for it with the structure and support it provides. However, after this travel experience, I will try smaller bags even if they provide less capacity.
Added this to my ozbagging collection
Got the 46L one in 2013/14, the tag things on the zips have basically all snapped off in the last 6 months. Not a complaint and it's easily fixed, just a general observation. Bag itself is still in borderline brand new condition and it's been around the world with me.
I'm well aware of what it is, it's basically an identical bag thats slightly bigger with a different name.
Not identical bag; Porter is more like a duffel bag w/o aluminum frame; Farpoint is has backpack frame.
Have this pack and took it on heaps of trips over the last decade. Been great, highly recommended!
Do they let these in cabin?
Yes.
YMMV - If it's stuffed full, then it definitely won't be under 7kg or fit in the carry-on dimensions tests they do for Ryanair etc
I got away with it a couple of times, but definitely got pinged a couple of times too.
Good bag, but it is very big on the back. Needs to be to fit 40L I guess
You give up some compact and weight (as in is heavier) due to the proper back plate and support systems… Otherwise you can drop to the daylite 44L or a belroy travel pack lite both 0.5kg lighter, slightly smaller but same volume. But no wear near as robust and supportive.
I don’t need it
I don’t need itFfffff
Just get it. Got mine for $123 during lockdown. 11 trips later and still looks brand new. You'll hit the 7kg carry-on limit before maxing out the bag.
123
i'da been obligated to buy purely on the aesthetic price
i already got a porter 30 i dont use enough - used it as an EDC for a few months but then i actually went the other extreme now and went to a TNF XS base camp duffel as my current EDC now (still 30L rating) - and a bunch of packing cubes/ tech organizers.
I've ditched my packing/compression cubes in favour of vacuum bags and a 50g pump. Amazing how much bulk it reduces.
@m9: Hmm, I might have to give that a try too! I've already got a similar pump, but have never used the vacuum function on it.
Reasons why this is the perfect bag for carry on international travels: it's relatively light but comfortable and sturdy to wear, it fits in overhead lockers on 737/320s, it fits in waaaay more than a carry on suitcase due to its soft shell, and the "tie down" straps allow for a shit ton of clothes and gear to be compressed.
I find it also never flags gate gastapo attention - don't think I've ever travelled with less than 10kg, never ever been pulled up due to its look, casualy slung on a shoulder as a I board.
Edit: also better than a carry on suitcase if you have that one extra pair of shoes that you just can't fit, you just dangle off the side looped around the clip, never any questions asked.
Price showing $325?
Green and blue are still partially discounted.
Probably shows how popular these are lol
Says 245 for me?
missed out :((. It's $325 for me now
😢 same
Damn missed out too :(
Can vouch for the quality of Osprey backpacks. The person I gifted the backpack from this deal couldn’t be happier :)
Does the 55L fit overhead cabin too?
The 55l is the identical bag with a clip on daypack on the front, you can remove it and have the exact 44L bg in the deal
To awnser your question as long as you don't pack the hell out of it it shouldn't raise any eyebrows
Thanks!
Slightly different but I've just bought the Osprey Daylite 26 + 6 backpack for our upcoming trip to Vietnam. We're taking check in luggage so I didn't want a 40l bag but the Daylite is brilliant for smaller loads. It's a 26l bag but expands to another 6l if needed, so 34l in total. This is plenty big enough for me and it's great for when I go flying (I'm a recreational pilot) as I can fit my headset, iPad, kneeboard, GoPro etc. I wouldn't normally spend $150 on a backpack but Osprey seem to know their stuff and I'm happy with my purchase.
Think I got one for around $170 about a decade ago. Still works great and my go-to for travel. Love the way it expands and compacts if I need it to be smaller.
Great for carry on.
I just checked my emails, I paid A$151.99 in 2017 for mine.
Note the latest version of the Farpoint bag doesn't have the shoulder strap. I prefer the older version which I own. Wife has the latest version of the Fairview and she is envious of my shoulder strap which is useful for short hauls around the airport when the backpack straps are zipped away.
Oh misses this one.
good deal in the face of the $300+ elsewhere, this is the one to go for if you want a true 40L pack and intend on filling it all the way out. Check out the fairview if you've got a smaller frame.
