  • OLED will be so nice to look at!

  • +7

    Note 8840HS = Hawk Point = rebadged 7840U = 8 x Zen4 cores

Have I mentioned how much I hate AMD laptop numbering systems?

    • how much of a difference is it in terms of specs and performance with 8845HS?

i've been getting mixed explanations during my quick research…

      • +3

Not much, same tech, but I'd be looking for a Strix Point laptop if possible. Drop in replacement, and significantly more capable.

Kraken Point is more the replacement for Hawk Point at the bottom of the stack.

Mind, I'm looking for a Strix Halo at a reasonable price ;-)

        • No reasonable price atm for Ryzen AI processors 🥲

        • Strix Halo isn't gonna come down in price anytime soon. I've heard anecdotal accounts of needing to redesign motherboard leads and therefore whole system profiles, so most laptop manufacturers will need (or at least be incentivised to make) new designs.

But yeah, the improved GPU with still decent power efficiency is very tempting

          • @songyi: We should be seeing more by H2, once supply actually hits the market. AMD sucks at supplying CPUs. The HX370 was barely anywhere on release, now we're seeing them pop up in mini desktops and the like under $1,500.

If only they could supply CPUs like they have the 9070, those are everywhere.

        • Strix halo at a decent price will be as likely as getting a 5090 at MSRP lol

  • +1

Seems pretty expensive without a GPU. You can get a laptop with an RTX 4060 around this price from other deals.

    • +3

you are correct, but those laptops are thicker and heavier and not 2-in-1 form factor.

i have gone through MSI Stealth, AW15M, Gigabyte Aero 15 and Legion Pro in the past from a work perk I had previously and I just want something I can easily use on the couch that have long battery life and doesn't have screaming fans 😅

      • Fans? on a Yoga?

A while back I bought a Yoga 2-in-1 7i - Intel i7. Its fans ran continuously and hard, even in sleep mode. Support tried installing all sorts of things, couldn't fix it. I got a full refund.

        • I hear similar stories from redditors talking about the Core 7 Ultra as well.

I wonder if this is an issue with the Intel series as they have higher max TDP overall.

          • @meong: The Yoga fan problem was with an 11th gen Intel processor, which is generally a sweet spot for performance vs TDP - 12th gen onwards are more powerconsuming and demanding, with higher TDP.

            https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/708765

going back comment at end. So, I blame Lenovo.

I replaced that Yoga with an Intel NUC M15, 11th gen, runs quiet… but Intel has now sold NUC to Asus and left the laptop making business.

            • @mantichoral: I actually liked the NUC/Tongfang chassis. They are really optimised for Intel.

I haven't heard any reviews since they got sold to Asus though.

              • @meong: yeah, the M15 aluminium case is good. The keyboard is a bit chiclet tho.

They did a 12th generation version, with higher TDP, worse thermals and battery life, and that was it. Their gaming laptop always sucked, though.

ASUS already had laptops. It took the NUC minidesktops, but why would ASUS need the NUC laptops?

                https://lloydwood.dreamwidth.org/16996.html

                • @mantichoral: I never understood that decision too for Asus to take over NUC laptops.

I actually thought the Tongfang gaming laptops were quite good such as Aftershocks/Clevo/Metabox? I saw some that had better Cinebench and 3dMark scores (less thermal throttling) compared to similarly specc'ed Alienware M15 R3.

Less battery life and runs hotter.
And before you give me the bullcrap of “there’s AC power plugs everywhere!”, why should I need to carry a power cable with me everywhere and stay near power outlets just to use my laptop?

      • +1

the gaming laptops ive used in the past never lasted more than 2 hours just for general browsing

    • +4

nowhere near the same build tier, anything you can get with a 4060 at 1.3k is basically full plastic e-waste.

      the 3050 yoga works though.

      • +1

agreed, the cheaper gaming laptops like LOQ or Nitro etc are plasticky

  • +2

I bought this a few months ago at around this price and it has been great.

    • how's the battery life btw for a general office use/browsing (not photo/video editing/gaming)?

      • +2

My son uses one at high school and says the battery life is great. He never has to charge at school and uses it all day but I've no idea what he actually does with it.

      • +1

It seems quite good for me, but it's my first laptop purchase ever, so I haven't got much to compare it to.
Have always used a desktop and wanted something I can use out of my office/whenever I travel.

  • I keep checking eBay and HN for a deal on an OLED 2in1 but cannot find anything near $1000, any suggestions.

  • +1

Better off with an Acer swift. I have the yoga, my son has the swift… track pad is far better, battery lasts a lot longer, the screen is sharper, brighter and more vibrant and the keyboard is quite a lot better too.

    • +2

which swift is a 2-in-1 form factor?

  • Why this and lose rtx 3050?

    • -1

cause 2-in-1 and also 3050 is not that much of a big deal

      • Imo I'd consider it but the OLED being only 60hz is big sad

        • yeah it is a bit sad isnt it but most power efficient laptops are running on 60hz or at least some of them would try to force 60hz if you are using battery

          • @meong: My acer swift go 14 with 8845hs has 2880x1880p OLED HDR10 90hz screen. Works at 90hz on battery too perfectly fine.

            • @AeymothSky: thats interesting… how is the battery with that 2K? i used to think that 2K will have significant impact on battery too

              • @meong: No impact at all.

plus you can set it to 1920x1200 if you want.

I paid $1097 for it but I saw it went as low as $997 at ow.

Currently it's $1297 tho unfortunately. Probably will see it go down when it's on clearance I guess for the newer laptops to come in.

                  • @meong: Yes.

                    • @AeymothSky: Oops meant 1197$ before then

                      • @AeymothSky: yeah umm… i really really need a 2-in-1 😅

                        • @meong: Why tho…

Can always buy a 2-1 laptop that's like $300 or a drawing tablet even!

                          • @AeymothSky: Its a laptop for the couch, a tablet for media consumption and also when in tent mode its easier to work with external keyboard cause you are closer to the screen.

Have you seen some of the cheap 2-in-1 laptop? The screens are terrible.

                            • @meong: Actually I got a dell 2in1 with 6600U perfectly adequate 1080p screen.

                              • @AeymothSky: My wife's 5700U HP Envy x360 works really well and thinner than the yoga.

Its just that you cant find them brand new.

                                • @meong: Yeah those are fairly old now surprisingly

  • About a month ago I ordered through Lenovo but somehow I managed make it a custom order, so the machine needed to be "built" which introduced a significant delay (I needed the laptop much sooner).

I got Officeworks to price match, but your milage may vary. There's no matching model number, but the specs are exactly the same.

    https://www.officeworks.com.au/shop/officeworks/p/lenovo-14-…

    • I did consider that too and I had 3 months delay when i bought Legion laptop in the past however there are no more stocks in the OW stores around me. How do you even get price match for online order?

      • 🤷🏾‍♂️

Walked in, found a staff member, asked for a price match, showed the Officeworks page and the Lenovo page.

They scoured the specs for a while then eventually agreed.

        • So does that mean its an online order made in store? Whats the turnaround for that?

          • +1

@meong: Depends on stock. I picked up from the same store two days later.

  • Have multiple YOGA and swift go, yoga sound is better, but most YOGA comes with 1200p 60hz OLED is really old and not compatible with swift go.

  • It so hard to find the weight of this and the Yoga 7 Pro. I bought the 7 Pro yesterday for my wife but trying to work out whether to cancel it for this. She doesnt game so the 3050 is a bit of a waste. She also doesnt watch movies or anything so the OLED on this could be a waste.

She will use it for her business, with a lot of spreadsheeting and also watching a lot of online videos for training and things. Basically just needs a touch screen, lightweight and great battery life. The heavyness of the 3050 could be negligible against the extra weight 2-in-1 hindges usually add. The battery usage of the 3050 could be negligible against OLED consumption.

Its a tricky one and both are probably overkill for her use but finding a decent quality touch screen for her needs is above $1k anyway.

    • JB Hifi has both the Pro and 2-in-1 albeit the EVO series. I think they are still coming from the same Yoga 7 chassis.

    • bit late, but it might be better to get 16' inch as you can run two docs/spreadsheet side by side.
I found the 14' to be too small (and regret my purchase).

  • Have 3 of these in the house as kids school laptops, the OLED is really nice and the bonus of 2-in-1 plus touchscreen/pen for writing is excellent in this setting. Had 1 screen broken, but that's because f***king child bashed it on the table. $900 just to replace the screen!

They can even do low-level gaming with a 780M, daughter has been smashing out Sims 4 :D

Not sure I'd get it if I wanted a more traditional laptop as they are a touch heavy for the form factor.

Also, this is a good price but I got 2 of them for $1259 last time.

    • Thanks for that. Are they pretty light?

Had 1 screen broken, but that's because f***king child bashed it on the table.

My daughter (7 at the time) dropped my X1 Yoga on our timber floor, cracked the screen. Haven’t bothered to fix it, it was about 5-7 years old so I picked up a MacBook Pro. Use it for work. But yeah, understand the frustration! I learned quickly that kids that age are too clumsy to be walking around with expensive tech like that. 🙄

    • The screens on the Lenovo are bullshit expensive to replace (hecne why I won't recommend Lenovo).
I would recommend going onto alibaba and trying to get a replacement there.
70%++ of the RRP is just ridiculous.

  • Do you guys think there is any chance of Lenovo releasing a version of these with Snapdragon CPUs any time soon?

I need to replace our computer at some point soon (is 14 year old iMac) and a 2 in 1 appeals to me as we travel a lot and would be handy to bring a laptop with us sometimes and would double for media/tablet use.

Snapdragon seems to appeal to me due to seeming better battery life but really unsure if this is worth waiting for. Don't do anything more than web browsing and media playback.

  • +1

7i 155H OLED has shocking battery life. Not sure how much AMD improves on this.

  • I got one of these. Just a slightly earlier version.
Unimpressed with the plastic case, I recommend you buy a metal one for china.
The flex is terrible and its easy to break the screen.
Also the monitor screen to replace is ridiculously expensive if it breaks (perhaps 60%-80% of the RRP).
