Low price for the Viltrox AF 16mm f/1.8 Full-Frame Lens - Sony E-Mount.

I'm waiting for the Sony 16mm f1.8 to drop in price so I can replace my 14mm f1.8 lens. The Sony is smaller and likely more reliable than the Viltrox but for under $500 the Viltrox is definitely a bargain!

Viltrox AF 135mm f/1.8 Full-Frame Lens - Sony E-Mount $699.50

Very low price for a good 135mm 1.8 lens.

I already have the Sony 135mm but dsamn that price is tempting copmared to the Sony (around $2k)

From reviews the Viltrox is close to the Sony optically but notcably bigger and heavier with worse AF.

    Just in time for Easter

I have the Nikon Z mount version of this lens (the 16/1.8) and it's excellent - I use it for astro and the little OLED screen is surprisingly handy as is the ability to preset two focal distances (A & B - e.g. near and infinity) and being able to instantly switch between the two with a button press

    • Hey, interested to know if you have tried or considered the Nikon Z 20mm f1.8 for astro and landscape. What made you choose the Viltrox? Thanks!

      • I actually have both - they are both excellent astro lenses (minimal coma and aberrations, fast and wide). (In fact all of Nikon's Z 1.8 lenses I've used are great astro performers)

Whilst the Z 20/1.8 is an excellent lens it's also not quite wide enough for certain wide field astro scenes (great for astro pano's tho). Personally I'd have liked Nikon to release a Z 14/1.8 (which has been requested/hinted at for many years but alas still nothing yet). Up till I got the Viltrox I had been using the Samyang 14/2.4 XP and the older (and very cheap) Samyang 14/2.8 before that (both F mount lenses) for astro stuff. Till Nikon releases something like a native Z 14/1.8 the Viltrox 16/1.8 will have to do

        • Thanks for that. I've used the Viltrox 13mm f1.4 on APSC and that was an excellent all rounder for landscape and astro. I'm testing the waters with FF on a Z6iii and currently have the 24-120mm and 40mm f2. I think I'll try get an ultra wide next, but have been reluctant to with the 20mm f1.8 due to the cost. So will be considering the Viltrox 16mm!

    • Expensive? Point to any other wide angle fast full frame AF lens anywhere near that price

      • -6

I said nothing about FF. Where do you read unsaid things? Example of a fast AF wide range lens within $300 is Viltrox 25mm f1.7 and it does compete with Sony in many regards.

        • +2

You do know that 25mm f/1.7 on an APS-C is like 40mm f/2.8 on FF yeah?

          • -2

@buff correll: You know that being FF only is not a mandatory requirement for existing, right?

    • +1

You’re clearly wrong. This is a fairly good lens with a solid built quality and stellar results.

      It’s already competitive

      • -3

You clearly misunderstood me, or show where I said anything bad about it other than expensive.

        • +1

But it’s not “expensive”, for what it is the price is cheap. It’s an issue of perspective.
          It’s a prosumer level lens

          • -3

@Commodore64: 700 is 2+ times more than 300. This is the perspective I expressed.

            • @Ozzster: Bad perspective.

You're comparing an APS-C price point to a FF and then making an "absolute" statement that its expensive.

As a FF user, no mate it really isn't.

              • -1

@ThadtheChad: Viltrox with its prices is a clear evidence that the old perspective of FF and APS-C with their old price levels are obsolete now. Either you should agree that they deliver way better in each price range, or create a new range that outpaces old vendors with their old prices and products. Whatever way you go, I understand that some people who invested thousands in gear, that, looking at Viltrox now, not worth even a thousand overall, and it makes them cry. And neg everyone saying them about their failed investment.

As FF user, you can't really see the difference with ASP-C without lab setting and huge zoom in. Hardly you could see the difference with Viltrox too, with your naked eye. But as an investor in expensive gear, yeah, Viltrox is taboo and bad.

        • Maybe you used aps-c camera body and don't see the value of the full frame lenes. Thus ignoring that major aspect with consideration to price.

Maybe it out of your budget.

For those who used FF or share lense with other who used FF, it worth it comparing to other FF lense.

Natural I would be happy if it cheaper. But at this price, I'll bit.

  • +2

A lot of the Viltrox lenses (X, L mount) are also on sale.

    • huh Viltrox don't make L mount AF lenses afaik.

  • +1

The 135mm f/1.8 pricing is a crazy good deal.

  • -3

Poor af, heavy, and bigger 😂 Easy pass!

    • -1

      then buy Sony?

    • The price is very attractive though. If I didn't already have the Sony 135mm I'd get one. Also I don't think the AF is poor, just not as good as native Sony which is basically class leading

  • Interested. Watch a few video reviews and it looks good on this price point. Wondering if anyone on this forum has used lens from this brand before? WOuld you recommend?

    • I own it and it’s fantastic.
Sharp as a tack with minimal distortion.
Better than any 16-35 zoom I’ve used and lighter plus faster.

  • Hi OP, do you know if it is any good for videos?

    • The focus mechanism probably isn’t video optimised but at 16mm you won’t need to focus too much anyway dude to the relative DOF and MFD.

    • Not sure but it will probably be ok but maybe not as good as a native Sony lens. For basic video it will probably be fine

  • Thanks! Purchased!

  • Thanks! I ordered two lenses—the 135mm f/1.8 and the 27mm f/1.2. They are even much cheaper than the Viltrox Chinese official store! Amazing deals!

  • +1

The price on that 135mm is incredible! Didn't know I needed it till now.

My wife is going to kill me.

    • +1

Instagram: "Here's a photo of my wife attempting to kill me with my 135mm Viltrox. Notice the sharpness of her blade"

  • +1

pricing error maybe? they all seem to be awaiting stock , I still bought the 13mm for fuji just in case.
Currently have the 27mm f1.2 and 75mm f1.2 and they are amazing for full price , even better value half price

  • Too right! Might be a pricing error, so hang tight!

  • Placed an order for 1 lens yet as soon as I did I got a "request received" via support even though I didn't contact support :/ Slightly concerned it may be a glitch in their system where only 1 lens perhaps was meant to be 50% off but it applied to all their Viltrox stock. Or maybe it was the Honey coupon I used for an extra $10 which they have revoked in the past when I was buying a cheap $30 item

Might also be because it was on backorder?

    • Hey mate, not saying whether you should use it or not, but honey is terrible for content creators that use affiliate programs.

Honey has been found to both:
      1) hijack affiliate links from people promoting/reviewing a product or brand and instead using its own. So the affiliate program money goes to PayPal who owns honey
      2) collude with big brands and stores to NOT have the best discount coupon show up on the list of coupons they try

Both of these are why there is a bit of a boycott of Honey at the moment

  • +1

Been looking at these two lenses for ages! ordered both, hopefully it's not a pricing error.

  • Typical digiDirect, now you'll wait months to get your lenses. Had the same experience before for even the in stock items

  • Now that I go back to both listings, they both say "Awaiting Stock". Not sure if it's always said this tho.

  • This is bigger and heavier than the already chonky Sony's 135mm??

    https://cameradecision.com/lenses/sizecomparison/2132-1544-7…

Wow it really is, and not by a small margin

  • Never heard of Viltrox. If anyone has this 16mm one, could you please comment on its quality specifically for video?

  • I would buy the 16mm but have a distinct feeling it's a price error. Be nice if amazon price matched it👍

  • Nice prices, also wondering if they're price errors. Grabbed the 16mm in Z mount and 13mm in X mount last night anyway, so we'll see.

  • Thanks op
    Got their pancake/chips lens, $80

    https://www.digidirect.com.au/viltrox-af-28mm-f-4-5-full-fra…

    • I got the 20mm 2.8 for $130 for my a7cii, very cheap. The pancake aperture too small for me

  • Killer price. Ordered both and hopefully it's not price error.

  • +1

Looks like the deal is over, the 16mm f1.8 price is now $759.20 and 135mm f1.8 price is now $1119.20

  • Expected price error…

  • they are all 20% off now instead of half price , more than likely pricing error but have not been notified yet.
Has anyone had their orders cancelled?

  • Not yet, probadly have to wait until Monday to see.

  • +1

Just got a personalized email from “K.P.” confirming that stock should be arriving within 2 weeks. So looks like it wasn’t a pricing error if this is a confirmation.

    • Mine says ETA is to be advised, from K.P.

    • Slightly regretting I didn't pick up more of their lenses but assuming it goes through I got what I wanted vs another lens I don't need

    • I haven't received any email.

      • same nothing from "K.P" or anyone talking about stock or confirmation.

        • I read from the RedNote account “digiDirect Sydney” that their Viltrox lens has just completed custom clearance.

          • @wqt0806: I can't track as I did not login before purchasing :(

  • I got the email from K.P Too, the email that says:

Thank you for your recent purchase of the below products. As our website stated these products are Awaiting Stock.
The current expected time of arrival is to be advised. We will stay on top of this to endeavor to update you as soon as there is news to report or will send you tracking details as soon as your item is processed for shipping.
We are committed to ensure you receive your order as soon as humanly possible. -K.P.

    • when did you receive this? approximate time of email and time of order?

      • +1

Received this email around 4PM today (ACDT). I ordered on Friday evening.

        • ok, thanks! I ordered on Saturday morning so probably email is yet to come through. Thanks for confirming!

          • @polarq: Also check your junk, the emails were in there for me :)

  • my email at 4.32pm yesterday

Thank you for your recent purchase of the below products. As our website stated these products are Awaiting Stock.
Viltrox AF 13mm f/1.4 APS-C Lens - Fujifilm X-Mount - The Current Expected Time of Arrival is within 2 weeks
We will stay on top of this and endeavor to update you as soon as there is news to report or will send you tracking details as soon as your item is processed for shipping.
We are committed to ensuring you receive your order as soon as humanly possible. -K.P

  • Did anyone received their invoice but with a quantity of ‘0’?

    • yeah weirdly the invoice says zero in quantity while the order confirmation email has the right quantity. I received two automated emails for this.

  • OK, I received an email from K.P too. However the estimated shipment time is late March… So it does look like this was not a price error. Happy to wait myself. :)

    • I still think it's a price error. It just that they are honouring it.

After they updated prices to 20% off in cart, there were several places showing the half price. Many possible reasons why they honour a price err.

  • I ordered the Viltrox 75mm. I also got an email from K.P. about the Expected Time of Arrival (ETA) within 2 weeks. But this morning, when I checked with their staff via online chat, they said the item is on backorder and the ETA is about 2-3 months!? This is confusing because when I check the stock status, it no longer says "Awaiting for Stock".

I looked up DigiDirect on Product Review: https://www.productreview.com.au/listings/digi-direct, and someone wrote a review about the price dip of the Viltrox lens, saying that "DigiDirect's support team confirmed it was a price glitch"."

    • OK that isn't a good sign :( :( :(

      • +2

Surely they would have refunded everyone by now if it was truly a price error and they weren’t going to honour it though?

        • That's my only positive thought… They would've done it by now, and maybe not even have sent out that email too (from K.P.).

  • The page no longer shows "awaiting stock," so does that mean the item is now in stock? Has anyone received a dispatch or shipping notice from them? Based on other reviews, Digidirect took ages to ship orders, and if they couldn't fulfill them, getting a refund took forever. :( :(

    • I spoke to support chat about this and they still say there will be a delay in shipping about 2 weeks (subject to change).
After questioning the current listing status their response was:

"Thanks for reporting the issue, this has been forwarded to the management, to u update the listing into "awaiting stock""

so… I think the listing status is incorrect, they still have no stock.

      • I called up Digi today and spoke to their offshored Manila call centre :D They said that the 2 week timeframe is just a general timeframe that is subject to change, and is the same timeframe they give every single order that isn't a X100vi. They give 3 months for that camera lol.

So it sounds like 2 weeks is bs from them. I'm fully expecting them not to fulfil any Viltrox orders and refund down the track, or it to take ages to ship.

  • -1

I guess the other thing we have to keep reminding ourselves is that these orders were made only a week ago. So with K.P.'s email confirming that stock "should" be arriving within 2 weeks - we're still within their estimated timeframe. I'll start theorizing and/or hoping for the worst in a week's time..

  • As predicted, Digi don't have stock and likely won't ever have stock of 50% off Viltrox. Email I received today after following up after the 2 week period:

"We wanted to give you an update on your order, as promised in our previous correspondence. We have been in touch with our suppliers and have been keeping a close eye on your products.

Today, during our latest follow-up, we received the unfortunate news that the Viltrox AF 75mm f/1.2 APS-C Lens - Fujifilm X-Mount that you ordered is currently on backorder. Our supplier was unable to provide an estimated date for when the item will become available. However, we will keep you informed as soon as we receive any updates.

As soon as we receive the stocks, we will promptly send them to you and provide you with tracking information."

I'm probably going to ring up tomorrow and cancel my order. Who knows when they'll "have stock".

    • Yeah even though Amazon has stock and you can get it delivered the next day!

      https://www.amazon.com.au/Viltrox-75mm-F1-2-Compatible-Mirro…

      • -1

Yeah Digi definitely being dodgy again so I asked for a refund today. It's already pending back onto my card. TBH, I only bought the Viltrox because it was 50% off, I'm not interested to pay $800 for it. I'd rather buy a used Fuji 90mm haha.

  • Got a email from Digi Direct today saying that my order is currently on backorder and they don't have a solid time frame for when the order will be filled because of the high demand and limited stock and they hope to have an update in 2-3 weeks

    • are you going to hold out?

    • I haven’t got a similar email yet but am expecting one since there’s been dead silence

Going to try and hold out although I bet they’re hoping for most people to cancel their orders

    • Just got my email a few minutes ago, more or less the same:

"Today, during our latest follow-up, we received the unfortunate news that the Viltrox AF 135mm f/1.8 Full-Frame Lens - Sony E-Mount that you ordered is currently on backorder. Our supplier was unable to provide an estimated date for when the item will become available. However, we will keep you informed as soon as we receive any updates.

As soon as we receive the stocks, we will promptly send them to you and provide you with tracking information."

  • Got the below email today, thanks for the update to tell me it’s still got no ETA!

We have been staying on top of your products with our suppliers as promised in our previous correspondence.
Upon our most recent follow-up today, we have been advised that the revised ETA for your ordered items:
    Viltrox AF 56mm f/1.7 APS-C Lens - Sony E-Mount - (no ETA)
    Viltrox AF 27mm f/1.2 APS-C Lens - Sony E-Mount - (no ETA)
    Viltrox AF 75mm f/1.2 APS-C Lens - Sony E-Mount - (no ETA)

    • It is hard to believe that letting customers order products you can't deliver for months is not an intentional business model for DigiDirect.

      • Should just boycott their business. Spread the news and let their business go bust and vanished in thin air. No time for their BS dishonesty.

    • I got the same email today, still not ETA on the 2 lenses I ordered 😔
